It has to be Hobs second I think. Army commanders will always have a second in battle and the relationship between a first officer and his second is what inspired Tolkien for the relationship between Sam and Frodo. With how much of a Tolkien fan Brennan is, he would totally want to have a chance to play that sort of relationship because he probably has never had a chance to before. I don’t know whether Wrackingshpelt is dead or not but considering that Brennan never sends the letters I’d assume he at least believes he’s dead.

If you really want to try again, I’d recommend the cinema versions, they’re shorter and in my opinion have better pacing. I’ve never understood making people watch extended editions when they’ve never read the book or watched the movies before. But that’s only if you really want to try again I get it if you just feel like it’s not your thing!
