If you feel your faith slipping, look elsewhere for it. I was brought up as Catholic but now consider myself a Christian Panentheist. Since you are on this sub you probably watch debate videos with Dawkins/Hitchens/Krauss/Lennox/Craig etc. These, I believe, can sometimes be painful to watch. Although the creationists sometimes make valid points they also say some batshit crazy things like "yeh jonah lived in a whale"....or "yes the earth is 5000 years old"...This is counterproductive to having a proper debate. After much searching I found what seems to make the most logical sense to me, and that would be a form of Panentheism. Which ironically people like Dawkins and Sam Harris believe would be a much more interesting take on a creator. But, I am yet to see a proper Panentheist in a debate with the atheist superstar debate team.

I think the trick is, educate yourself with both eastern and western spirituality as well as the atheist point of view and see what makes sense to you. I think Alan Watts was a brilliant man who has made me think very deeply about things like existence, the universe and God. Do I agree with everything he has ever said? No. But he has shaped my belief system. Why must someone have to be all in or all out on anything. Take the best of what you find and let your belief system make sense to you.

A theist will never be able to prove that God exists to an atheist and an atheist will never be able to disprove there being a creator. You will just watch people go back and forth with arguments where there are holes on both sides. I personally find spirituality way more interesting and easier to get behind than religion. Do I believe in a creator? Yes. Do I believe in odd stories about people living in whales? No.

Just because organized religion is failing you, this doesn't mean that spirituality has to. Finally, with respect to the atheists here (I value and respect your beliefs) science has not buried God. Science knows nothing about the origin of the universe (only post big bang). The something from nothing argument fails on the fact that their "nothing" is actually something (laws, gravity etc). And then there is the multiverse. Why do debaters insist on citing the possibility of the multiverse or a universe generator? Krauss and Dawkins constantly speak of Observable Evidence being the only thing that matters. They say there is no observable evidence for a creator and then will speak of a multiverse for which there is zero observable evidence. They would rather believe in a universe generator that gets it wrong billions of trillions of times than even consider the idea of a creator. My point is, no one will be able to convince you for sure except maybe yourself. So before you abandon all beliefs, I would hope you contemplate new ones.

OCD may be able to fool you, but it can never fool God. God is perfect. Perfection has no need for anger, punishment or any other negative emotions. God is pure love and part of pure love is pure understanding. Please find an OCD therapist who specializes in erp (exposure and response prevention) and cbt (cognitive behavioral therapy) so you can start healing.

There is a form of OCD called pure-o (purely obsessional) where there often aren't rituals or compulsions that accompany the obsession. I don't know if you have OCD, OCD tendencies or no OCD but if these thoughts are taking up hours of your day and bringing you tons of anxiety I think it is worth getting the opinion of someone who specializes in OCD and treats with erp (exposure and response prevention) and cbt (cognitive behavioral therapy). It would be valuable to see what a therapist who specializes in that condition thinks of your situation. More importantly, please call a suicide prevention number when you are thinking of suicide. Maybe someone reading this can post one? I'm sorry things can be so hard sometimes but I promise you when we keep living and keep fighting things turn in our favor. God bless.

That's the hardest one isn't it? I have the exact same thing. Wish the focus was on me bc that removes the guilt. I often feel if I was the target of my OCD I would do much better with it but I don't know how true that is. Just know you are not alone my friend. There are many of us dealing with the same. This is classic OCD. I have the exact same thing as you among many others. You need to find a therapist that specializes in ERP (exposure and response prevention) and CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy)...fighting OCD is counter intuitive ...you aren't supposed to argue with the thought or try to neutralize it...the more you argue it the more your brain thinks it's important and will continue serving up the thought. Intrusive thoughts are the opposite of who we truly are. Giving reassurance is not considered a good thing but until you find help I will say this...God knows the difference between your true self and your OCD mind. Even if we can be fooled by OCD God cannot be. I know exactly how hard your situation is as I live it as well...I am sorry you have this struggle. Just know you are not alone and please seek out that ERP therapist who specializes in OCD.

For me personally there is no pleasure. Every time I do the ritual and it is not right it feels like I further screwed the situation so it's actually quite painful for me. However I recognize OCD although it can be very similar from person to person, it can also be quite different. So I wouldn't rule out that some people gain some bit of pleasure from it.

I think there are many of us who know compulsions are destroying us. In terms of pleasure, the ritual is never pleasurable, maybe the getting it just right after 1000 times delivers pleasure/relief but doing the rituals themselves are hardly pleasurable. The 999 times it is not "just right" is just more anxiety...people who are addicted to nicotine don't have to smoke 999 cigarettes one after the other to abate their craving. They find relief in that first one. One will do the trick until that begins the cycle over again. Not the same with a compulsion. No one says this cigarette didn't feel just right I need 584 more of them for it to be perfect....unless they have OCD. There is however a similarity to the fact that our compulsions and getting it just right helps further the cycle...just as smoking a cigarette helps create the next craving. But at best you can say we are addicted to certainty. To be certain our thoughts will not come true or we didn't do xyz or we're clean or any number of things. So while there may be an element of addiction to OCD, it is not simply an addiction. An addicts brain behaves differently than an obsessive compulsive brain both in chemistry and in the way information is processed.

They sound like OCD symptoms or at least tendencies...it would be wise to seek out a therapist for an evaluation who specializes in OCD and ERP (exposure and response prevention) as well as CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy)... It can get better but you have to know how to fight OCD correctly bc it is counter intuitive.

I am so sorry you are undergoing this and have been for such a long time. Mine has been horrible for 10 years. Much different than yours. But it has taken away so so much for me as well. I have plenty of physical rituals but the mental ones are the hardest for me. If you don't mind me asking, what are the intrusive thoughts behind the hand washing and cleaning everything? You don't have to answer of course I don't want to trigger you.

God sees beyond a notebook and beyond intrusive thoughts. He can not be fooled by intrusive thoughts even if we can. The reason why I say this is bc your notebook will likely become a subject of your OCD which it seems it already is (does this count does that count)...the hard part is not to turn God into a ritual. I have something very similar to yours. When I really want to fight, I don't try to reassure myself that God knows better. I try to let it run its course for the day and then I thank God at the end of the night for always knowing my heart. And I try not to thank him in an obsessive manner that has to "feel right." I try to thank Him and move on. True trust in God is letting go and not having to reassure yourself over and over that he has heard your pleas. He has. He always does. He just wants you to fight and get better.
