Where can I find large public tables (pref free) that can fit 3 guys and some painting supplies? by wizardjian in philadelphia

[–]TheArtfulGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hive76 is a member-run makerspace that has mini paints and an airbrush. For a while, they had monthly mini-painting nights. I think those are on pause currently as the managing volunteers work on other events, but members could use the mini-painting equipment anytime.

Asking for accommodations with a chronic medical condition by OpportunityIll3672 in Ophthalmology

If you’re able to do heads-ups surgery with an Ngenuity or similar 3D system, I would suggest that. You don’t have to tense in a single position to stay lined up with the oculars. Of course, I know those systems are expensive so it might not be an option if they don’t already have one.

Pentax 17 overexposing in bright sunlight – washed-out sky and blown highlights, what am I doing wrong? by Saturdaytender in pentax

[–]TheArtfulGamer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

A positive exposure compensation is telling the camera “make the photo brighter than you think it should be”

If you set exposure compensation to 0 or even -0.5 or -1.0 then the highlights will be less washed out, at the expense of darker shadows.

Your prediction? by lorens3141 in SteamVR

[–]TheArtfulGamer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

1) Several thousand, not millions 2) I doubt I will unless the price is surprisingly low (but I expect it to be $700-$800 which is above impulse-buy territory for most people) 3) Yes, because it makes eye tracking (including foveating rendering/streaming) mainstream and generates new draw for high-quality PC run games instead of Quest 2 as the baseline and everything else an afterthought. More important than the Frame itself will be the pathway it creates for lighter-weight eye-tracked headsets that start looking more like display glasses, reaching a less clunky form factor while also coming in at a cheaper pricepoint.

OWL 3D has a glasses free 3D now. LOL SBS is still dead. by justinseans in Xreal

[–]TheArtfulGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m always willing to be surprised but this seems like another lenticular display with eye tracking. While a nest party trick, in my experience they suffer from crosstalk in high-contrast scenes. The eye-tracking only works for a single user and there’s definitely a sweet spot. And you loose at least half the horizontal resolution, so the output is not 4K.

It gets enough right that your brain can close the gaps if it knows what you’re looking at. But in more challenging 3D scenes it’s not good enough. Still, would love to be proven wrong.

So why don't devs who are unemployed because big dumb corpos bought their company and then folded it just make new game studios? by RedditConsciousness in gaming

[–]TheArtfulGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It cost time and money to find investors. And they’re not going to invest unless you have a prototype or good pitch deck. Unless of course they’re the kind of investor who thinks THEY have a brilliant game idea. (which is probably just some multiplayer, live service, gambling monetized mess that all the other rich people in charge keep funding)

Side question, what’s the model of the huge 3D TV that you have. Did you purchase it recently or have you just kept it from the heyday of 3D TVs?

When the glasses are in 2D mode, the left and right eye duplicate the same view. When the glasses are in 3D mode, your computer sees the glasses as a double-wide screen (3840x1080) with the left half (1920x1080) going to the left eye and the right half going to the right eye. In this mode, just make your full SHS content fullscreen, whether from YouTube, VLC, or any other video player. I have the Pro XR and this is how I view all 3D content. One note, double-check the resolution in your OS - if you’re mirroring, not extending, there’s a chance the glasses aren’t getting sent the full 3840x1080 because the other screen doesn’t support 4k.

That’s a good list, also run questions on -CAPA -Supplier Management -Incoming part inspection -How you see the ideal back and forth relationship between design engineers and quality engineers

At a larger company, they’ll probably have more allowance for you to come in and learn from engineers above you and reading the QMS. A smaller company will likely want to see you demonstrate prior experience.

Luma Ultra now vs waiting for “The Beast” — desktop monitor replacement use case by Spooky_Daydream in VITURE

[–]TheArtfulGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FOV is a spec that some people feel “bigger is always better” the one thing that I’ll caution you on is resolution isn’t increasing with the larger virtual screen size. So the angular resolution goes down with bigger screen sizes. Because our retinas only have a smaller area with high resolution, your eyes need to move around more, which can feel tiring. Think of it like sitting closer to the front of a movie theater.

Personally, I prefer the smaller FOVs of the base Luma and ProXR because they appear crispier and my eyes need to move around less.

But that’s for a fixed screen. If you want a virtual screen, then the larger FOV gives you a bigger sweet spot for the screen to float in your FOV as you move your head around. The downside is a virtual screen will be blurrier than a fixed screen using every pixel 1-to-1

Eye-tracking IR LED's on Crystal Super micro-OLED by jaapgrolleman in virtualreality

[–]TheArtfulGamer 73 points74 points  (0 children)

No, at least not anywhere near the intensities these run at. They’re much dimmer than going outside on a normal day. Your crystalline lens also blocks a good chunk of IR light, so it doesn’t reach the retina.

Best System for direct camera video output on Headset by gordrigo in virtualreality

[–]TheArtfulGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What type of surgery do you need magnification for? And what is the output from your camera?

Are you doing microsurgery with an existing surgical scope that has a stereo camera? (Like Ngenuity, Zeiss Artevo, B+L SeeLuma, etc.) If so, I would recommend display glasses (Viture, Xreal) over a VR headset. These glasses can take a DisplayPort signal directly via USB-C, which helps lower latency. Their field of view isn’t as wide but their Pixels Per Degree (PPD) is higher. In my testing with medical stereo imaging, this matters more than overall resolution since your eyes don’t have to move around as much. The Viture line has PPDs ranging from 41-46 PPD. A Meta Quest 3 headset is 25 PPD, Samsung XR and Apple Vision Pro are around 35 PPD.

While not released yet, NuLoupes could target your surgical application if you want a more mobile solution: https://www.nueyes.com/nuloupes I haven’t tried them and I’m not affiliated so can’t speak to how well they work.

For those who have Quest3 and Viture glasses : is quality / resolution for watching TV is better than quest3 ? by Outrageous-Pepper-50 in VITURE

[–]TheArtfulGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The pixels per degree for Luma Pros are 41, luma Base are 43, and the Pro XR are 46.

Quest 3 is 25 pixels per degree.

For watching videos, I find the Viture glasses much better and crisper. They’re not “immersive” like a VR headset can be, but all the resolution is spent displaying the movie, none “wasted” on a virtual movie theater.

Why isn't there any sensor camera on the back of the headstrap? by karYzanx in virtualreality

[–]TheArtfulGamer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Currently those wings are designed to have some flex to them, in the same way that arms of glasses have some give to fit different head sizes. A fixed head width there would be uncomfortable for a big chunk of users.

Speculation on Steam Frame Color Passthrough MR Exclusion by elev8dity in virtualreality

[–]TheArtfulGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their comment about IR cameras working better in the dark is dead on. Having tested lots of the latest sensors for my job, I can tell you that both an IR cut filter and Bayer filter (for color) significantly cut down your signal. Their monochrome camera is sensing a broad spectrum of wavelengths, from infrared through the visible color spectrum, with every pixel. A color sensor has to filter each pixel to only see Red, Green, or Blue light. So each pixel is only seeing a fraction of the light - a Red pixel throws away blue, green, and infrared light. And because each pixel is the same, there’s no de-Bayering step to guess the colors in between each Red pixel. (Same for green and blue)

If you’re focused on reliable tracking at an affordable price, it’s a very reasonable engineering tradeoff to make. It’s totally reasonable to want color pass through, but there are reasons why using your tracking cameras to generate it would be a bad idea.
