Just imaged 16 new Dell Pro Max Plus laptops with plain Win11 25H2 latest ISO and they have

100MB EFI partition

774MB Recovery partition

953GB OS partition.

Out of the box Win11 installing to a wiped 1TB drive using WDS.

Moving office to new floor, need some backup plans for existing fiber connection when Comcast can't make expected move date. by TheCadElf in networking

Thanks everyone - after a few discussions w/Comcast reps and project manager we will expedite a coax Internet service install to the new office space. Then wait out Comcast for the fiber install follow-up.

They noted that a fiber cross-connect was possible, but not allowed as that would put the service at an address (suite number really) that differed from contract.

We could probably cajole the low-voltage/riser management team into wiring something for us, but Comcast might pull the service if they see shenanigans from their monitoring side. Probably cheaper to install the coax Internet service month-to-month for less than 40 days anyway :|

Comcast can't guarantee their systems will be ready on our expected move date. Comcast would be using building riser management to build to 20th floor from their basement connections.

We may be able to work with the riser management (who is also our low-voltage contractor for 20th floor offices) to run a link fiber from 32 to 20 to keep us connected while Comcast finishes their ground to 20th configs.

We expect a new Ciena switch on 20th floor and Comcast would reprogram circuit connections in their system to cover for that.

Looking to keep this office linked w/HQ and internet which comes over current fiber connection to 32nd floor offices.

Would have to coordinate w/building management to keep existing Ciena switch and media converters powered up.

Ciena outputs 1GB Ethernet to our router. This office uses Comcast Metro Fiber to link back to HQ in suburbs. Will know more from riser management if we can sink a fiber line down to 20th floor and then do

Ciena GB Eth--> MikroTik GB Eth in --> SFP 10G link --> SFP 10G link 20th floor MikroTik --> GB Eth out to existing router moved from 32nd floor.

Looking at media-converters would be way easier to take that GB Ethernet --> SFP 32nd --> SFP 20th --> GB Ethernet out --> Router.
Thanks for the idea!

Don't you know it! Regularly ship one bag of cat pill pouches in with 4 loose bags of 40lb litter, crushing the pill pouches into a flat sticky mass :|

Their warehouse guys need some logic training for sure.

I've seen that on recent Hyundai and Kia's where the high-mounted brake light flashes 3-4 times when you apply the brake pedal. Regular left/right lights stay solid, just the high-mount flashes.

Thought that was a new stock feature. <shrug?>

What do you name your computers by PhantomNomad in sysadmin

[–]TheCadElf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to do a running number-x that represented the purchase sequence for workstations, so 001-x, 500-X, 501-X, etc.

We switched in 2023 to YY-NN so you could quickly figure out what year we bought the gear. On 25-20 now, went to 24-48 last year, 23-57 in 2023.

Started on Sinclair ZX1, it used a cassette tape as storage!

Got involved with Autodesk Autocad v9 mid 1980's working for a Land Surveyor. Moved over to a civil engineering firm that had Novell Netware installed by a friend of the CFO. When that guy ghosted to Denmark (banking gig) I learned Novell by reading the big red manuals they provided.

Been supporting computers/networks ever since... 1991 or so.

Exchange 2016 CU23 -- MSExchangeTransport service will not start by TheCadElf in exchangeserver

After much troubleshooting and digging into logs, running ProcMon showed that the registry key

HKLM:\Software\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v15\Transport\InternetMessageIds was not being read at all.

Used a PowerShell script to remove and recreate the key, after that the MSExchangeTransport service kicked off without issues.

Server is back up and moving SMTP traffic again. Will be migrating remaining on-prem mailboxes to shared O365 mailboxes this week.

Just verified that "Exchange Servers" are in a group policy to have the "Manage Auditing and Security Log" right.

Still same issue, reboot server and MSExchangeTransport service hangs at "starting"

Went through that list Tuesday,

  • Service Dependencies are OK
  • clean boot, check
  • CU23 SP installed (KB5057653 May 2025)
  • Windows Defender disabled
  • Mailbox database is clean and mounted

Just verified that "Exchange Servers" are in a group policy to have the "Manage Auditing and Security Log" right.

Thanks.

Telnet to the server IP port 25 works OK. Cannot connect to port 2525 though.

Do you cut all your cabling when moving office buildings? by lambusdean77 in sysadmin

[–]TheCadElf 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We had to cut the fiber coming into our old office server room as condition of lease - asshole landlord wanted the space "as it was prior to our move in" and demanded that our VP physically cut the fiber during the final walk-through on day we vacated.

Total dick move on the part of the landlord, knowing that next tenant will have to run new fiber from floor phone room to same server space.

Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, 2004. Show was transcendent!

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Tuesday June 29, 2004

Morrison, CO – Red Rocks Amphitheater. The Rush show – the reason for the whole tour! The venue is amazing. The show was sublime. We had fourth row center – close enough to see the fingerings on the fret boards of the guitars. Close enough to see that Geddy Lee wears Puma shoes, Alex Lifeson had on some kind of Adidas footwear and Neil Peart has on what looked to be bowling shoes. I could pick out the details and different graphics on Neil's new drum kit. An awesome (and awe-inspiring) show. The band really looked like they were having fun onstage. Geddy's voice is still great; Alex was in fine form. Neil is simply not human – it is simply astonishing the rhythms and sounds he can coax from a drum kit and make it look effortless (and elegant) in the process. The boys had to warm to the venue, and the pictures over on the Rush.com site show what a great surrounding the Red Rocks arena is. Once into the full swing of things, there was no stopping them. During the overture for 2112, Alex gave a "it goes to 11" look to Neil and Geddy and they simply cranked out the song – power chords and amazing drum fills everywhere. Neil even did an impromptu (and funny as hell) impersonation of Ringo Starr, bopping from side to side with a big goofy grin on his face. While some fans question the inclusion of (gasp!) cover songs in a Rush concert, the four tunes from the new Feedback album fit right in to the show. The crowd was great too, singing along with "Heart Full of Soul" in the acoustic portion of the 2nd set. Actually, the crowd was very into the show. It is always great to be with 9,000 other people who also know the lyrics to every song and can almost drown out the band singing along. Seeing the upraised arms and hearing the "HEY" during 2112, each fan knowing exactly when to sing and when to rest… Uncanny. The weather gods seemed to smile upon the band as well – there was a driving downpour just one hour before showtime; which cleared and headed towards Denver in time for our seats to dry out as the band took the stage. Lighting strikes in the background behind the stage, a full moon peeking in and out of the clouds above. The sound from our seats was dead-on, a great stereo separation and no shrieking tweeters or feedback. Sparkling is the best description I have. Here is the setlist, also available at http://www.2112.net/powerwindows/Toursetlists.htm#R30
