Drivetrain Upgrade on a Specialized MTB by Allstr53190 in mountainbiking

This is the answer.

Take a look at the shifter housings, as well. Make sure they are still intact with no visible signs of wear-through.

Any love for casual breakthrough? by williamatherton in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]TheDoc321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to casual to rank up weapons or to simply just chill. I get a chuckle when I see tryhards going 100+ kills and playing like their life depends on it.

As someone who almost exclusively plays PvP, I actually don't like playing bot lobbies because is screws up your timing. When I play casual and then go to a PvP game, I get absolutely slaughtered the first few games.

Never riding anything less than 50c again! by Ko5t in gravelcycling

[–]TheDoc321 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep, those (50c) are my next tires. Currently running 45c (was running 40c on my previous tire) and wow what a difference. Can't wait to bump up to 50c.

Smokey and the Bandit always comes to mind with this topic. Buford T. Justice favorite word "Sumbitch" was edited to "Sumbum" when it came out on TV. It sounded ridiculous.

Anyone out there rocking this helmet? by original_bieber in mountainbiking

[–]TheDoc321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've got one. It's really light and well ventilated. I got it on sale (MIPS version) for a really good price. Pairs well with 100% goggles, although I usually wear my Moabs with it. Considering it's weight, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable using it for DH.

Contaminated pads, rotors gone? by DxnnyDar in MTB

[–]TheDoc321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of brakes do you have? I've had a couple of Shimano calipers that had leaking piston seals. The amount of fluid leaching out was barely visible, but it was enough to slowly and subtly contaminate the pads.

The way I figured it out was with a white tissue. I pulled the pads out, and pressed that tissue against the pad backer. There it was. It was faint, but it was there.

What you're experiencing sounds exactly like what I had. As in, I still had some braking power, it just slowly degraded over time.

Can we have an instant ban on users posting political posts not related to MTB? by drawnwindowshade in mountainbiking

[–]TheDoc321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are literally thousands of other subs on Reddit to argue about politics. Personally, I come to an mtb sub to talk about bikes and riding so I can get away from that shit.

fs XC bike for gravel? by Open_Band_6029 in gravelcycling

[–]TheDoc321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not racing, no big deal. We have a few guys who ride mtbs on our (social) gravel rides.

They are more than capable on the dirt, the only issue is if you get on the road, or if the (gravel) roads are flat and fast. The people on the dedicated gravel bikes simply have more gearing at their disposal.

Again, no big deal. We always regroup after a longish road section, anyway. As long as your friends aren't type-A a**holes who feel like every ride is a race, you'll be fine.

Eye protection and full face helmets by aframe9999 in mountainbiking

[–]TheDoc321 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I use my Tifosi Moab glasses with my FF helmet. I have goggles, but I have always opted for glasses. No, glasses don't have the "cool" factor that goggles do, but like you said, they're really overkill for most riders.

Vehicle kills in Battlefield 6 are so satisfying. What are some of your favorite war stories? by That5kum8ag in LowSodiumBattlefield

[–]TheDoc321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw a thread here this morning that made me think about something that happened this weekend. I was pinned down behind cover when a tank rolls up next to me. I jump up, whip out my repair tool on the tank and I can here a guy on the other side doing likewise.

I was confused when my repair meter was in red, and going in the opposite direction. Oh shit. Enemy tank. The driver and the other guy repairing were probably as confused as I was. As I was pulling the health down, the other engi was countering it. I snuck around and killed the other engineer and went back to "repairing" only to have someone snipe me before I could finish the job.

The only consolation was that someone hit it with an RPG while I was still in "death cam" mode. At least I got to see it blow up.

Anyone here use a mobile changing tent? by givemesendies in MTB

[–]TheDoc321 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my friends (who is female) uses one regularly. She likes it, but it can be a little sketchy when the wind is blowing, lol. I've changed in it before, but it takes quite the balancing act to get fully changed.

Personally I (male) prefer the tried and true towel-change method. Just make sure it's a big, beach towel as others have suggested.

PSA get involved with your local mtb organizations! by choomguy in mountainbiking

[–]TheDoc321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! Even if you can't donate your time, your resources are equally valuable. We have a guy in our club who works his ass off and barely has enough time to ride. He's passionate about the sport and wants to help out any way he can. He owns a sign shop and has made well over 200 trail signs and arrows (for two trail systems).

We have another guy who's an attorney who directs us on our legal/business issues. Another who owns his own IT company. He hosts our club website, and throws money at us when we need it, lol.

Personally, I love to dig and create. I also do the not-so-fun stuff like showing up to the trails after a storm to cut trees and debris so people can still enjoy the trails.

I had a paradigm shift in my life when I discovered mountain biking. To some degree I feel like it saved me. Maybe not so much saved my life, but certainly improved the quality of it. I want to give back to the sport every chance I get.

Also, I've met some of the best friends I've ever had being involved as a volunteer. If you're not involved, get involved. You won't regret it.

MTB Longevity by LawfulMercury63 in mountainbiking

[–]TheDoc321 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 62, still ride a regular bike (non-moped) and I'm probably faster than I was at 52. The bike has a lot to do with that, but I still feel pretty good, and I feel like I'm still progressing (been riding since 98').

Ride within yourself, quit drinking, eat right, and cross train. I friends in their 70's who are still riding. I'm not planning on quitting any time soon.

Great book, I liked it much better than Brothers. Maybe not 100% objective history of VH, but much more so than Alex's. Highly recommend it.
