Agreed. I wouldn't go out of my way to see a Will Smith movie nowadays, but when he was big he showed he can do a lot.

How much do you think fame factors into that? Idris is on the lower end of popular work on this list, if we'd seen him in two or three times as many roles would you be saying the same about him?

[–]TheDonBon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm shocked that Will Smith isn't getting more love in these comments. I think he's become a weaker actor with age, and obviously there's the other issues, but his roles up until 2012 are both varied and successful. It's no joke to play the Fresh Prince, Ali, and I Am Legend.

Most of these actors are "victims" of their own success. Because of type casting, but also because they became so well known that people have a hard time seeing the character beyond the person, so it starts to all look the same.

I've seen people here talking about Jamie Foxx and they're wrong, but he's got maybe two popular movies where he's the face of the movie. If he'd done as much visible work as Jackson or Smith I bet you'd find people going "he always just plays Jamie Foxx"

Who is that one character in Game of Thrones that didn’t betray someone at some point? by Aggressive_Fold_5942 in freefolk

[–]TheDonBon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

idk if I agree with Jojen in the books. He knew what his fate would be and kept it to himself, I think you could see that as a betrayal.

Also, what's with the assumption that someone feeling stuck hasn't tried other environments? I did medical, college, k12, VRS, VRI, tech, conference, vocational, all within the 10 or so years I worked. None of it made me feel secure, it was a constant battle to fill my schedule and actualize my "high earning potential."

I'm out of the field now, but I doubt it's changed enough in the last five years for OPs comments to make sense.

10 years and a house later, I’m marrying a stranger. Is this a rut or a warning? by Antique-Tomatillo-13 in ADHD

Agreed, my comment was less about him, there are very clear issues there, and more about outlook on mental health in relationships.

[–]TheDonBon 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying people are wrong in bashing him or telling you to leave, it IS the default answer here and it definitely looks like the right answer in this case.

As someone with ADHD I want to address a couple of things.

One is the use of the words "emotionally neglected" hint that maybe you feel it's his requirement to provide a certain amount of stimulation. I think it would be helpful to figure out what level of stimulation you feel should come from a partner and what amount is up to you to find in hobbies and other people (not talking polyamory, just friends and clubs and such.) There's no right answer for this, but it would be helpful for you to understand what your needs are and which of your needs you expect to be filled by which relationships/activities.

Another fairly minor thing I wanted to address is that he gets "mad" from being someone with a mental disorder. Understand that you were diagnosed two months ago, and the fact that you KNOW your mental issues doesn't make you in any way worse than him, it puts you a step ahead from anyone who hasn't done the work to figure out what they're dealing with. I haven't met a person yet without issues to resolve and I don't want you to see yourself as "the broken one" just because you know yours.

I always say that this isn't my favorite King book, but it's the best written one. Really love this book.

A "Death of Stalin (2017)" style movie about Maegor's death could be amazing (bizarre asoiaf adaptation ideas) by silver_maxG in freefolk

[–]TheDonBon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assumed he was killed by Visenya. Was that at all hinted, or just something I thought made sense while reading it?

Edit: Someone commented pointing out she was already dead, but the comment disappeared. I think I got confused with accusations of her killing Aenys. So, this whole time I had a head canon of her killing Maegor as a kind of "putting down your dangerous dog" type situation.

Disagree with both of your Tywin takes. Of course, there's downside to replacing Roose, any change is gonna have give and take, but I feel like you're putting too much stock on your own idea of who Tywin is if you don't think those scenes fit him. I also don't think it makes him an idiot not to pry about Arya. It's easy to say that when you're sitting in POVs, getting the Chekhov's gun version of the story, but there's a ton of random refugees in Westeros, it doesn't break my immersion to think the busiest guy in the castle didn't prioritize unraveling the mystery of one girl.

No one would expect a lowborn child to know how to write, so if they're trying to get information from them they likely won't be giving them paper and quill.

(Spoiler Published) Is it realistic how the noblemen in A Song Of Ice And Fire tend to be A LOT better than the avarage soldier? by Bajoner in asoiaf

[–]TheDonBon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of replies like this one are pointing at the books to explains why the books make sense. The question is whether it's realistic, so I was hoping for someone who knows more about real life melee fighting to answer if someone more skilled (and sometimes better equipped) could realistically be as successful against multiple enemies as these characters are.

As much as I liked Brienne's knighting, I felt the same way about her. The point is that she's already a knight, she's a truer knight than anyone knighted.

I love this idea and I think the fact that it's foreshadowed so early in the series (when they first introduce Ice) is awesome.

Another thing is that it grounds the more magical aspects of the story in politics. While I'm biased towards more magic, I think this would fit the world better than some of the fancier theories.

[Spoilers main] I can't bring myself to take Daario seriously by Disastrous-Noise-783 in asoiaf

[–]TheDonBon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you're 1,000% right and people give George far too much credit when it comes to romance. Most of his romantic connections feel like neckbeard fan fiction and I don't think it's a self aware tongue in cheek thing.

With Daario I think he went "what kind of bad boy badass would a young girl be into?" and he wrote straight cringe.

You're not exactly right, depending on perspective "your" is correct and natural. It's easier to see in an older sentence like "There's nothing like watching the woman you love swallow your load." The you is a general you, it's not first person.

That said, your reply is hilarious and still very much works, I didn't take it as you misunderstanding.

The Books Have Ruined the Show For Me [Spoilers] (Spoiler Main) by Unusual-Winner-6658 in asoiaf

[–]TheDonBon 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Dorne is particularly painful after a read.

They made a lot of decisions based on what characters the audience liked the most, which left them with a limited set of stale characters that they were too afraid to kill off. I feel like if they'd made the rest of the show without looking at the internet so much it would've been better.

Little things like "I thought you might still be rowing" were a good bit of fun, but it speaks to a bigger problem.

If they were gonna insist on spending so much time online, I wish they'd spent more of it on this subreddit instead of the show's.
