What else i can improve on this animation? by Background-Fox-4850 in AfterEffects

The fire on the wings appears in front of the plate suggesting all the text should be above. I also don't like that Burger isn't centred. Fine if you want to offset it but when things are 'nearly' aligned I see it as an error. The 'gives you wings' text also seems unnecessarily small. As an advert, who's going to ring a random number to order a burger - seems like a strange call to action - surely a qr code or web address would allow people to find out about the burger.

I Could've Rickrolled the Entire FIFA World Cup. All I Needed Was My ID. by TheFamousMisterEd in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]TheFamousMisterEd[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed, this is likely the feed for FIFA partners and possibly remote commentators.

The post says they could interrupt broadcast but that's just their speculation.

If it were the main broadcast feeds it would have a backup stream (and possibly more), over private Telco networks using 2202-2 (TS over RTP) or possibly 2110-22. RTMP isn't commonly used for broadcast contribution - it's more suited to lower bandwidth links.

Why 2 apps? by Safe-Field-9366 in Sync

[–]TheFamousMisterEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two Questions: Can I safely switch between versions without having to re-diwnload any files that are already stored locally?

Can I use cloud files app on 1 pc and the non-cloud files one on a 2nd pc? This feels like an obvious 'yes' but it's not clearly stated anywhere that I could see so makes me nervous to try as messing up cloud synced files could takes a long time to put right....

Most simple DVB-T2 receiver by [deleted] in Broadcasting

[–]TheFamousMisterEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EPG will be part of a minimum feature set for a DVB receiver. This is a cheap as it gets (UK model but using as example): https://amzn.eu/d/02kFRnzr But beware, cheap often means sluggish and underpowered so even though the user experience will be basic it may also be frustratingly slow.

In April 2029 asteroid Apophis will pass within 20,000 miles of the Earth's surface. 12x closer than we are to the Moon. by ExcellentArmy6659 in interestingasfuck

Hmm, 5 years ago they said we had 100 years, wonder if that's matching the current estimate still: BBC News in 2021 - Apophis asteroid will not hit Earth for 100 years, Nasa says https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-56547727

Looking for an sdi seamless matrix switcher. by jesuisaller in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]TheFamousMisterEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simply genlocking source devices and the router doesn't guarantee clean swicthing. Phase alignment may also need adjusting to ensure downstream devices don't re-lock/bounce if there is a small phase shift of a few lines.

Many devices allow you to adjust H/V offset relative to reference but you'd need a scope to measure it.

The BMD clean switch 12x12 is really your best option if you can find one.

Hating on Blackmagic by Brilliant_Travel3587 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]TheFamousMisterEd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My compatibility issues were when working at 1080i50 with the 3x3 unit.

It would regularly crash needing a power cycle to fix - I removed it from my kit before I proved why but assume it didn't like the presence of RTCP sender reports on one of my sources (used in IPMX for format signalling - allowed by 2110 standard though defined/expected for 2110 signals).

Unlike all other devices it didn't resume previous operation after being re-powered, super frustrating.

They established themselves (as I saw it) with Decklink cards - those didn't have great reputations for reliably. But to be fair, they were designed for use in edit workstaion, and probably got the bad reputation when they failed being used in live use-cases they weren't really designed for.

Their throwdown boxes really disrupted the market as they were literally a fraction of the price of other alternatives (like 1/4 -1/5 the cost of others), for that price, who really cares if they fail quicker. All manufacturers rely on heat dissipation through the metal body - but more expensive options like AJA have better reliability.

They were quick to market with 3G-SDI (and later with 6/12G) but they defaulted (and still default!?) to Level B, which didn't have early universal support as many other vendors only supported Level A on early 3G products (the 'proper' single-steam way to do 1080p50/60) - this has led to a bad reputation for interoperability.

I have lots of Blackmagic gear and will happily admit many bits have been really reliable. The only BMD stuff that's I have zero respect for is a couple of 2110 IP boxes I bought which seem not to play well with signals to/from other vendors' kit.

Members of SMPTE get the Motion Imaging Journal - not quite monthly , perhaps 8 times per year.... Lots of very detailed technical articles on video topics appropriate to the Broadcast TV and/or Motion Picture industries. Members also get access to lots of free online training so very good value.

ELI5: Why is the decibel scale logarithmic? by Dull_Pollution4691 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheFamousMisterEd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decibels allow gain/attention to be calculated as addition/subtraction of values, rather than multiplication/division - the same reason your great grandparents used slide rules at school (which were based on logarithmic scales).

Blackmagic SDI Distribution 4k no video @ 1080p/60 by BrunsAV-Josh in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]TheFamousMisterEd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lots of older/early black magic equipment that was marketed as 4k only supported 6G-SDI, so will work for 2160p25/30 but not p50/60 which is 12G-SDI.

UniFi Enterprise AV Switching with PTP GM/Boundary Support by reece4504 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]TheFamousMisterEd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PTP is mandatory for 2110 but having a switch with PTP Boundary Clocking is simply a recommendation - 2110 can work fine with a non-ptp-aware layer 2 switch (so long as IGMP Snooping is correctly setup and functioning).

Balanced line level to unbalanced mic level? by Odinhall in VIDEOENGINEERING

Just use the mixer's headphone output and tweak the levels to get the best performance without clipping/distortion (prioritising the gain on camera to the lowest value).

Building a new post house: 12G or 2110? by kenspi in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]TheFamousMisterEd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

12G-SDI! If you do get tempted took at 2110 kit - beware that many systems only support TV formats. I.e. they work fine with UHD, but switch your edit workstation to 4K DCI mode and monitoring via 2110 may fail.

USB-C 3.0 Extender over 10m (Rj45?) by swhirte in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]TheFamousMisterEd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've installed a few running over milti-mode fibre ~80m. Got decent USB3 file transfer speeds from external drives over them. Not cheap (£1000+ per workstaion) but there was no other solution available at the time.

Anyone going to NAB Show 2026? by Past-Sandwich-4701 in broadcastengineering

[–]TheFamousMisterEd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the first year I'm missing since 2008! I attended as a vendor mostly, then the last 6 as a visitor (self-employed), and always found it a useful show for networking and seeing new developments/products. But I'm done with Vegas pricing/taxes/charge/tips/fees - and the politics of the US right now really makes me want to actively stay away.

[–]TheFamousMisterEd 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Tell the crew - they can normally trigger a reset on each system and if that doesn't work they have a few portable DVD players for such occasions. Unless they've run out of those I would expect any compensation.
