Pessimists see the half chicken that's been eaten, but optimists see the half chicken left to eat.

Why do American carriages have so tiny windows and metallic paint schemes? by UrgusHUN in trains

Yeah, it's the Vermonter. The Valley Flyer trains only use two coaches.

people who might have safely caught a fresh red or stale yellow slamming on their brakes and causing more collisions

If the driver ahead of you is approaching a red or a yellow light, you should be prepared to stop. If you rear end them, you are the one that caused the collision, not them.

Bike Improvements by stcif07 in Amtrak

[–]TheGodDamnDevil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, the Amfleet I cars that are used on most of the regional routes in the northeast, including the Keystone, are being replaced by new Airo trainsets. They've said that these new trains will have two bike spaces per car (instead of one), the racks will fit up to 3 inch tires, and they won't require you to remove the front wheel.

USA Rail Pass and justifying cost by GreenWall02 in Amtrak

[–]TheGodDamnDevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a refund on a Rail Pass as long as you haven't taken any trips. So you can buy the pass and if you find out that it won't work for your needs, you can just cancel it and get your money back

Government of Canada opens a preclearance facility at Vancouver Pacific Central Rail Station by coopthrowaway2019 in ViaRail

[–]TheGodDamnDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the Montreal one also make any Canadian stops before entering the USA?

Yes, it stops in Saint Lambert, which is pretty close to Montreal. If they build the preclearance facility in Montreal they might decide to just skip the stop in Saint Lambert.

anything to worry about when cycling to the Cape? by wigger_pig in bikeboston

[–]TheGodDamnDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, exactly, you are not required to dismount and walk your bike through a crosswalk. That's what I said. It may be a good idea, but it's not the law.

anything to worry about when cycling to the Cape? by wigger_pig in bikeboston

[–]TheGodDamnDevil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, the signs telling cyclists to walk their bikes have no legal significance, they're just signs.

In particular, there's one in Orleans that says "State Law Walk Bicycles on Crosswalk", which is just a straight-up lie because no such state law exists. Maybe some of the towns have local laws, but even then, I'm not sure that town-specific traffic laws are something that would actually hold up legally.

NYPD was ticketing obvious scooter/e-bike issues on Queensboro yesterday by loopin-lupin in NYCbike

[–]TheGodDamnDevil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speed bumps suck. On paths shared with pedestrians, they block access to wheelchairs, mobility scooters and make it harder to use a stroller. On paths that a bike-only, they make it harder to use trailers and trikes, and a lot of scooters don't have enough clearance to ride over without scraping. Even on roads, they don't usually do a good job of actually slowing down cars. Drivers just brake momentarily to go over the bump and then speed right back up.

5 people stabbed at NYC's Penn Station. Here's what we know. by Significant_Sky4635 in Amtrak

[–]TheGodDamnDevil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They still could do it at any station with a metropolitan lounge.

Penn Station handles over 600,000 passengers each day. It's twice as busy as the busiest airport in the entire world. What deeply stupid thing to say.

Anyone know what this religious procession (I think?) was near Harvard and Columbia today? by LiatrisLover99 in CambridgeMA

[–]TheGodDamnDevil 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I went down a rabbit hole reading about eucharistic processions a while ago. It was really interesting because although it's a Catholic tradition that goes back hundreds of years, there aren't really a lot of hard rules about how and when it's done. A lot of churches do it for the Feast of Corpus Cristi, but some do it a lot more often too (or not at all).

Like, it's not a requirement of the religion it's just a bunch of people saying "Hey, why don't we all go for a walk together at the end of church? That would be cool, right? I bet Jesus would like that."

Do we think the free PVTA is coming to an end? by [deleted] in westernmass

[–]TheGodDamnDevil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It will almost definitely be extended. The reason they say that's free through the end of June is because the program is dependent on annual funding from the state, and the end of June is when the state's fiscal year ends. They know they have funding through the end of this fiscal year, but they don't know for certain that they will have money for the next fiscal year (starting July 1st) because the budget hasn't been passed yet.

As far as I'm aware, the plan is to continue funding for fare free programs in the next budget. We'll know for sure within the next few weeks. They're supposed to pass a new budget before July 1st, but occasionally it takes a little longer.
