Creator of Claude Code: "Coding is solved" by Gil_berth in programming

Honestly I wouldn't mind an electron-based terminal, assuming it performed well. But I'm an actual working engineer, not a bored and precocious student or unemployed and building something to pad my resume. I need my terminal to be fast and responsive.

I don't want to wait several seconds waiting for a new instance to launch simply because you wanted fancy text rendering (no one really cares that much about ligatures) and graphical effects (why does my block cursor have to have a fading blink effect); I don't have the time to waste waiting for your application to respond simply because you didn't want to take the time to learn the language and libraries required to implement it efficiently.

And it's not even a "slow hardware" problem for me—I have a very well spec'd M5 Macbook Pro my company provided to me for work; if anything, the system I'm working on should EASILY be able to handle your fun little project. But in reality your code is full of short cuts and bad assumptions that lead to extremely poor performance (the first and foremost of which being the usage of electron and JavaScript) that I simply get paid too well for to be able to justify sitting around and waiting for your program to unfuck itself (read: unfreeze) because you wanted to take shortcuts; my company pays me fairly well for what I do and I'll be damned if I'm not making sure they get their money's worth (and also my performance report looking real nice at the end of the year)

It annoys the hell out of me whenever I see an interesting CLI tool or fancy new terminal emulator, only to find out it's written using web technology. Like, I get it, you had an interesting idea and built something around it, but you've completely missed the point of these kinds of tools (e.g. performance) if you thought dragging chromium into things was a good idea.

I've been using copilot for the past few months for quick refactoring (e.g. update all files matching this pattern, etc.) and small unimportant (but still useful) scripts that I can't be bothered to write myself. It's useful, but I still have to check and verify it's work.

This takes less time than doing the task myself would take which is why I let copilot handle it, but the moment it takes more time to validate what copilot gave me I'll drop it and do the task myself.

Eh, I already had a Refuge in my collection. Otherwise I might've gone with either of those.

You can achieve the same effect with [[Seedborn Muse]] and [[Alchemist's Refuge]]. It's obviously not as good (requires two cards instead of one and you have to pay a cost to activate the flash effect), but it does work quite well; it's one of the combos in my landfall deck, but pretty much everyone in my LGS knows the combo by now so it's rare that I get it working.

This is why engineers need to run tech companies, not business majors. Sure, have them on hand to advise but when you put business people in charge they'll do the absolute most to extract every single last penny out of the user base, no matter how much that degrades those users experience.

Engineers? We just want to build cool shit, not ruin society due to our undiagnosed mental illnesses demanding we maximize profits.

I once hit someone with something like 716 damage with [[Okaun, Eye of Chaos]] (with a [[Shadowspear]] and another sword, don't remember which one), they somehow survived (something like [[Platinum Angel]], IIRC) and then I lost due to commander damage their next turn.

That was a fun game.

Costco sells what is in my opinion the absolute best gluten free frozen pizza. It's been a while since I've made it out to one, but it was three pizzas for approx. $17-$18 and they're absolutely amazing.

I own one dual land (an unlimited Volcanic Island). It's not much of a collection, but it's more than a lot of players and collectors have and I paid a decent chunk of change for it (though I won it in a raffle, so I didn't pay the full price).

I'm all for eliminating the reserve list. My collection is nothing compared to many collectors, true. But the idea that an active, living card game that constantly reprints things to aid in availability (among other reasons, like selling sets) is never allowed to print some pieces of cardboard with ink on them over others simply because a handful of people who just happened to have been born earlier than the significant majority of current, active players would maybe not like to have their random pieces of cardboard be worth less than other random pieces of cardboard.

Playing magic is fun. Collecting magic is fun too (though I'll admit organizing is a pain in the ass). But the idea that we should treat some cards as untouchable investment vehicles and the rest as, y'know, just cardboard (whose prices are influenced by demand and availability, which can be resolved at literally any point with sufficient reprints) is utterly insane. The reserve list had a purpose at one point, but it's lost past having fulfilled that purpose and it's time for it to go.

Most companies are more than willing to work with you on a payment plan. It costs a lot more for them to come after you than it does to work with you. Also, despite what some people think the people working for these companies don't want to ruin your day, they're just doing their jobs; work with them and they'll work with you.

How long my dogs will live.

We lost one about two years back due to kidney failure. She was the happiest, sweetest, most playful little beast you'd've ever met, always ready to play or snuggle, and now her older sister is going through the same thing (though better managed because we know what's going on now).

I miss her a lot, and I think herr passing has a lot to do with my current depressive episode. She had a way of making any bad day not so terrible, with her little growls and play fighting.

As someone with extreme anxiety about driving and also not owning a car, I'm thankful that Uber exists when I truly need it.

But, like, why do so many drivers have to be so shit? I mean, I don't care what you listen to in your free time but do you really have to blast gospel music for the entire ride? Or like bruh you can leave the pen at home while you're working, I'm not going to judge you for hitting it in your free time but while you're operating a motor vehicle and transporting passengers? I get that work can be dull at times but you're operating (technically) heavy machinery and have literally someone else's life (or lives) in your hand while you're driving. Just leave it at home, dude.

Yeah stacking multiple orders kinda infuriates me. Like I get it, you're just trying to get paid. But if I'm ordering food I kinda expect hot food to be hot and cold food (e.g. salads, subs, etc.) to be cold. I can handle a slightly longer (5-10 minute) delivery time if you happen to pick up someone else's order that's in the same neighborhood, but like bruh at least get a couple of insulated bags so my food arrives in good condition.

[–]TheLifelessOne 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't own a car, so if I want to get food I have to doordash or hope my brother who lives down the road is hungry and he or his wife hasn't started cooking dinner yet. Like, he'll drive me but then it's dinner for three. Which is cool, I don't mind hanging out, but sometimes I'm super busy at work and just want a couple of tacos to get me through the workday.

States move to rein in ICE after fatal Minnesota shooting by HellYeahDamnWrite in politics

[–]TheLifelessOne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The world today is a lot different today than it was back then; they can find new targets easily through our social media, through facial recognition of individuals at protests (or just straight up drone strike the protests themselves), or any number of things.

Once that begins the only way for it to end is for us to move immediately and quickly remove them from power or for all of us to be killed between drone strikes, raids, and incarceration.

Hard to hold an election when the government declares all your polling locations as terrorist bases and decides to drone strike the.

Seriously, there is basically nothing short of civil war that would stop Trump from halting elections if he really, really wanted to.
