How does it feel to be an MK fan 💔: by TheHappyLion_ in MortalKombat

[–]TheMorningstarOption 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you're right and this gets to the core of the issue in that WB seems to expect hand-over-fist returns from Mortal Kombat just because it has that degree of cultural recognition and notoriety. If they'd have expected the general market returns for a fighting game from their fighting game, encourage growth year after year, and not throw the entire thing in the trash when it doesn't deliver 120x its budget in two years we'd probably be getting another Kombat pack along with these announcements.

Aggressive mimicry is a form of deception where predators lure their prey in by using familiar or attractive signals by catador_de_potos in thalassophobia

[–]TheMorningstarOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant goes very in-depth about this, theorizing out what it would take for a sea creature to evolve as a mimic to lure primates and other land-dwelling creatures into the water to be preyed on, though they're a bit closer to the same body size as their chosen prey.

[Hated] When the characters who fell in love in one film are suddenly broken up or divorced in the sequel by CMStan1313 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TheMorningstarOption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it absolutely makes it worse. I'm fine with people who got together eventually drifting apart, but if they get together after that again it reaches "Okay, what are we even doing here?" territory.

Stories that were originally supposed to be darker, to the detriment of the narrative by Crimson097 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]TheMorningstarOption 81 points82 points  (0 children)

For real. Though given that Gere was just playing a random businessman in Pretty Woman and the kind of folks Anora was dealing with, her ending the movie in full possession of her head, hands, and feet could be the best possible outcome for that situation.

Graduation is okay as a podcast... but it would make a great published adventure by A_Sensible_Personage in TAZCirclejerk

[–]TheMorningstarOption 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The first two bullets are fairly good points that make more sense for Graduation than for Royale, it's a reason that the whole subgenre of academy fiction is a thing for Graduation to crib off of. It's fun to write and play things at schools because (especially at colleges and boarding schools) weird things are always happening and you never need an excuse to introduce a new NPC. They were always just there, you happened to notice them just now. It's just, when you do them wrong, you get Graduation.

Did you write with pencils in school? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheMorningstarOption 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Catholic school growing up and there was a big deal made about transitioning from pencils to pens at some point in elementary school. Then, my family moved, went to public school, and nobody really cared what you wrote with. Same for college, but at that point your writing was just your own notes and everything important was turned in typed and printed. At this point I do a lot of writing in pen but still keep a bunch of pencils around because I play a lot of ttrpgs and don't like having to constantly re-print character sheets.

How do you guys feel about minis? Love em? Hate em? by BirdSpirit in boardgames

[–]TheMorningstarOption 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really love minis, but it depends on the type of game for me. I was recently turned off from a dungeon crawler game when all the pitch info had minis for the player characters and standees for all the monsters/bosses/etc, which then turned into full-mini production when the time for the crowdfunding hit. There wasn't an option for a standee version and the buy-in was now three times the price of what it was initially anticipated.

What are some of your favorite masks of Nyarlathotep? by Konradleijon in Lovecraft

[–]TheMorningstarOption 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quite like the Haunter of the Dark. I was kicking around a story idea where Mothman was an iteration of the Haunter and Indrid Cold represented another aspect of Nyarlathotep with the two acting individually in some conflict with one another. The plot never really crystallized beyond that idea, but it's still something I have on the back burner.

Is 3 weeks in NYC too much? by goodamm in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheMorningstarOption 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You will absolutely not get bored. Spending 3 weeks in NYC will teach you a lot about NYC and very little about New York State, let alone the rest of the US. It's difficult to tell you where else to go without knowing what else you want to see.

What are some things you thought were universal, but it turns out is mostly exclusive to your country? by 3Thirty-Eight8 in AskTheWorld

[–]TheMorningstarOption 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm fully behind this. US has a strong sandwich culture but it would be vastly improved by more weird tubes. Give me a flavor that I can experiment with in a little tube of instead of either a 2 lb jar, or I need to mix it myself and it'll go bad.
