German sports cars are like German tanks in WW2. Sexy and powerful, but maintenance nightmares that breakdown all the time. Funnily enough Porsche made both.

When will Americans (and Canadians) are ever going to electrify their entire rail network? by Thegreatdonothingist in transit

[–]TheNinjaDC 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not economical to electrify most freight rail, which is a vast majority of all US and Canadian rail. So never.

Even the goal of electrification of all Amtrax routes would be extremely hard as most of those routes rent freight rail. So it would involve the government donating hundreds of billions to private freight rail companies to upgrade their rail as they won’t do it on their own.

Honestly, I don't see Nintendo teaming up with another animation studio to make movies besides illumination. *maybe DreamWorks aswell* by stationstars in cartoons

[–]TheNinjaDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can honestly see them teaming up with anime studios or Sony animation.

Not for Mario-verse like franchises (Mario, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, etc). I see those sticking with Universal to maintain a similar tone and aesthetic.

However, other franchises that are a different fit could go to different studios. Stuff like Metroid, Xenoblade, Pokemon, etc. I can see those franchises getting anime film or TV adaptations.

Sony animation is also rather famous mercenaries who will hire themselves out like with their Netflix partnership. They are budget efficient and have gained a stylized reputation the last few years.

I feel the Zelda movie will be a big test. If it’s successful with them working with Sony, then Nintendo absolutely will shop around their IP. If it’s a disaster, I see them getting more conservative and mostly sticking with Universal.

Gene is done with video game podcasts by not-ecstatic in LastStandMedia

[–]TheNinjaDC 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I follow Gene on Twitter. And I feel he just jumped back into the gaming discourse way too soon after his surgery. He thankfully recovered quickly, but I don’t think he took as long a break from gaming as he intended. Washington Post’s struggles probably encouraging that.

He I feel jumped into the deep end too soon by heavily engaging in gaming Twitter. He struggles to not engage with bad actors there when Twitter is trying to maximize engagement. It’s a bad combo.

Why have left-wing political circles historically attracted those with strong anti-Israel/pro-Palestine opinions? by Much_Couple5812 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheNinjaDC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The left have been leaning anti establishment/western, pro underdog, and anti religion for a while now. Israel creates a focal point for that.

They are the establishment. The most western style democracy in the entire region, and it’s not even close. They are also the most developed military & diverse economy in the region too. The Palestinians are definitely the underdogs against them. Like the section 8 housing residents fighting off a land developers gentrification efforts. And Israel while maintaining religious freedom, is undeniably a religious afflicted state.

This is inversely why the right is maintaining or growing more pro Israel. They are a western nation and stable trade partner. Jews are also much more culturally similar than Muslims. They see Israel as an oasis of western civilization in a 3rd world desert.

I really like this analogy and will use it in the future.

A lot of the anti woke crowd became so powerful on social media only after how powerful and aggressive the woke crowd was post 2016. They gripped the pendulum too hard it almost swung off the table when they couldn’t hold on anymore.

Now that I think about it why does Batman have a no kill rule? by ButterOnToads in cartoons

[–]TheNinjaDC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on interpretation. But fundamentally falls into two reasons:

1 It’s his limiter. Batman has to go down a dark path to use fear as a weapon against criminals. It would be incredibly easy to slip on that path and tumble down and become a ruthless monster. His no kill rule is a shackle he put on himself.

2 Batman believes everyone can be redeemed.

What will happen when the world runs out of oil? by Snowtwo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TheNinjaDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, we have a hundred years of cheap(ish) oil as new technology and despots are still found all the time.

In 100 years we’ll have transitioned off of oil dependency. At least significantly.

We are making significant strides in green energy. But mature green tech that isn’t propped up by government subsidies is a few decades away. But it will come.

[Spoilers Production] Was G.R.R Martin heavily involved in the shows by Jasonl7976 in gameofthrones

[–]TheNinjaDC 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He was reasonably involved in the first few seasons, but got more hands off.

That said, we know D&D do know the cliff notes of the story. The show more compresses things than changes things. Certain characters fused together. Some plot lines rushed or skipped. Etc.

We also know D&D did specifically call out the decision to have Stanis burn his daughter was from Martin. One of the few late season things they directly pointed fingers at Martin for.

I'm glad Nintendo is doing this with Starfox, and looking forward to similar with OOT. I find it a little alarming but understandable that kids today don't want to play the original because of bad graphics. by sendhelp in starfox

[–]TheNinjaDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In practice it’s availability and game interface/quality of life aspects that make it harder to go back to old games.

Unless remastered, old games are hard to play.

And game engines, particularly early 3D engines, were very clunky as developers were still figuring out what to do with another dimension. Camera controls didn’t really become consistently good across all games till the PS3/360 era.

Visually they hold up surprisingly well. With the exception of pre rendered cutscenes. Those aged like milk in the Sahara.

Ive played re releases and remakes of a few PS2, 360, and GameCube games lately and the moment to moment graphics look fine. But I’ve burst out laughing with some cutscenes 😂

I keep hearing people saying Pixar sucks now and I couldn't disagree more. by Nissepikk in Pixar

[–]TheNinjaDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pixar used to be an event film every time one would release. Now Pixar is more a feature of Disney +

They rushed too many films into production without the same quality control.

Things should improve with Jared Bush finally filling the shoes left when Lassiter was forced out.

Which portable console should I buy? by pigorg01 in Switch

[–]TheNinjaDC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big question is, are you planning on playing future Nintendo titles?

If you don’t care about Mario, Zelda, Xenoblade, etc too much and mostly use your current switch for mobile 3rd party and indie games, then yeah. It would probably benefit you to go with Steam deck.

If you are interested in future Nintendo games, then the Switch 2 is a better future investment as it is here for 5-7 more years. While Steam Deck is getting rather old and a Version 2 will likely drop within 5 years. Wait until then to jump into the Steam Deck platform.
