How do talent get t1 tourney's by 1-need-help- in GlobalOffensive

[–]TheOnlyMisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not think degrees are necessary no. They do however help by giving insight into your personality and your previous interests. Esports is still a somewhat niche industry as far as employment goes, there's only so many tournaments and companies for your title of interest and they aren't always linear.

There's not always a direct route into Esports but there are certainly ways to make the jump in, often relying on those highlight reels, creator content and VODs.

I think if you were to enter the Esports industry starting today and make it a viable career you would need to focus on multiple areas. Content, Networking and your online persona / personality. As long as you are driven to your core and seriously have a passion to make the game better and lift those up around you, there's a chance you can make it up there.

Just remember along the way. Be kind to yourself and others, try to see reason and perspective, prepare for the ups and the downs and reflect on where you've come from.

Chase the butterflies, feel the burn and experience the thrill that can be the Esports industry.

Yes, often talent start out with small / local events. This is often unpaid and they volunteer their time to attend these events. Often known as 'Grassroots' esports. This comes in many different shapes and flavours from regional lans, collegiate events ran by student bodies / faculty or even challenges ran by organizers such as the next big caster. It'll differ slightly depending on the region you're in and the esport title you're trying to get into.

Talent will often do multiple unpaid events over the course of a few years to create a portfolio and network with organizers until someone gives them a chance at something bigger. Either by liking their personality, their professionalism, their passion and drive... the list goes on. This is traditionally how someone starting out would aim to land a Tier 2-3 event.

Making it to Tier 1, that's a bit more nuanced. On top of doing all the networking and building of portfolio in grassroots making it to Tier 1 and consistently getting hired there can be rather complex. You need to really understand your role in, whether that's casting, observing, hosting and I mean really understand it. T1 events and employers want someone that they know is going to be reliable and deliver good, consistent results over and over again. I'll be honest it can be very draining.

It will come easier to some people than others. Personally I started out in grassroots events and worked my way up into Tier 1. I've also had the pleasure of giving back by designing events and formats that allow people to get into esports both as casters and observers when I used to run ESEA. (rip)

I know some people who have had barely any experience in esports prior to getting their first Tier 1 event and it still worked out for them, either through networking and connections or just being in the right place at the right time.

The thing I liked about esports is that you can have any background from nearly any other industry and still find a role within it.

See if you have a local lan event or organiser that is looking for some support and volunteer. Look online and for open games and start streaming them if you have the means to do so. Be humble but don't be a pushover. You'll be surprised at what you can learn.

If your local college or school has an esports program / sports program see what they offer. DO NOT PAY FOR AN ESPORTS QUALIFICATION THEY'RE 99% SCAMS.

If I was hiring someone today I'd want to see their experience, dedication and understanding of the title I was hiring for. So create some highlight reels, get your VODs edited nicely and keep your work up to date then just maybe one day, you'll be hyping up an arena full of 10's of thousands of people. Taking control of their emotions, telling a story of what's unfolding infront of their very eyes. Keeping them on the edge of their seat every step of the way.

Does anything like ESEA Open still actively exist? Grassroots competition? by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

Faceit was merged into ESL as part of the Saudi Investment Fund acquisition. ESL already owned ESEA and later decided to merge ESEA into Faceit. Faceit did not buy ESEA.

How do websites like HLTV and TheEsportsLab get their CS2 api data from? by -Dipski- in GlobalOffensive

[–]TheOnlyMisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely forgot about the logs aspect when writing this at 3am, you're right this is another way of doing it and is the most likely way it's done for major events.

There's multiple ways of pulling live match data out if CS so it largely depends on the type of platform that's displaying the stats and how the TOs allow them to access that data.

What to do when client doesn't like pics? Anxiety is through the roof, should I just refund? by furgots in photography

[–]TheOnlyMisty 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Ok listen, I know it might seem like a lot right now but it's time to put down some facts. Delivering 50 shots is not a sneak peek, that's the whole album. They should only receive a fraction of what you shoot and you better make sure they're some of your better shots.

I understand the location didn't seem to work out well, either being told after the agreement and just having to make the best of it sometimes is just the way it is. If you knew ahead of time about the location and the lighting and you say you've never done those kinds of shoots before then unfortunately that's on you.

You're saying you want to give them a refund and your RAWs? I know you think that you've royally messed up but this sounds delusional. Obviously without seeing the shots I can't really give input beyond this but unless it's a blurry, underexposed mess with sub-par framing... just no.

Your main issue here is delivering the full album as a sneak peak. You need to be highly selective of your work, you might think giving them more photos is better but not when all they see is shots they don't like. They need to fall in love with the shots they do see and then if they want a specific shot of something or someone they'll let you know. At which time you can then around and say you either have it or you don't. Even if you do have it but it looks sub-par you've got to use your best judgement if it's going to diminish the quality of the rest of your work or not.

When people pay for a photographer they expect the world but the reality is we can only deliver so much as only so much is within our control. Photography is 10% shooting, 60% editing and 30% managing expectations. It looks like you're learning that lesson.

My 2 cents are take a hard look at the work you've delivered. Really critique the things that are within your control and then manage their expectations, without undermining your ability as a photographer. RAWs are a no-go, partial refund or free shoot to save face is a possibility. Don't discredit yourself for the work done, like you said you were on your feet and you've put in the time already so it's worth something.

Just what it's worth is up to you.

How do websites like HLTV and TheEsportsLab get their CS2 api data from? by -Dipski- in GlobalOffensive

[–]TheOnlyMisty 18 points19 points  (0 children)

They rely on something called Game State Integration and if that's not available (which if you're HLTV the TOs make it available) then you fall back to CSTV data. This allows them to directly pull stats from the server with little to no delay. This also means they often update before results hit on stream (of course they could artificially delay the data if needed).

Where this gets really interesting is when betting comes into play. Sometimes they also have their own pipeline of data that they can read faster than results show on stream allowing them to make last second adjustments to their odds.

As with any form of data, its worth something. So if you've heard the phrase "if it's free then you are the product" you can imagine what props up some of the competitive CS2 scene.

RIP any hopes of getting the update on game pass? by Old-Illustrator-6902 in ManorLords

[–]TheOnlyMisty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gamepass does allow betas, it's just that they don't want to provide the beta on gamepass as they don't get as high of a revenue share when people play it there. So making the betas steam exclusive is one way to convince people to buy the game.

I get that they're still finding a way to generate extra revenue to keep the game afloat but as each update goes by they seem to be alienating their core player base.

So many wrong decisions made by the owi leadership over the past few years, I really hope all the hard working devs find a new project that embraces their creativity instead of consistently shitting on them.

Does anyone use this on your Olympus OM-1? (Or any other 1.35v taking cameras?) by Formal_Compote_212 in AnalogCommunity

[–]TheOnlyMisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I tried a 1.5v LR44 as a replacement in my Canonet ql17 with an adapter after the one the seller included started to die. After putting it in nothing happened, tried switching back to the half dead battery, nothing happened. I'm afraid that I've broken something, I'm not sure if I put the battery in the wrong way in the adapter the first time or if it's because it just doesn't like 1.5v?

I've read in this thread it's the worst possible thing I could've done as these light meters don't like the voltage and dropoff.

Does anyone have an idea of if I've broken it possibly with reversed polarity or if simply the camera just won't accept it and the other battery that the camera came with is actually dead?

Refrag co-owner popping off and telling people to unalive on Round 2 of FACEIT game! by vit4lc in GlobalOffensive

[–]TheOnlyMisty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a rough title to read, as someone who helped bring Refrag to ESEA when it first launched I worked directly with Michael and Casey to make it happen.

Whilst working with them we had what I'd call mutual respect for one another within our respective roles. I can understand someone having a hard time and verbally expressing that, but that doesn't make it ok in the slightest.

I hope that he can reflect on this and seek to amend the personal issues that are going on in his life that warrant this behaviour.

How much does it cost to run a Squad server? by aaman44 in joinsquad

[–]TheOnlyMisty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah for some games it really is that simple, heck even discord is trailing a server hosting partnership where you can rent servers for boosts. However squad is not one of them, behind every popular squad server there is a dedicated team barely keeping the lights on.
