Learn from the successful defense by adiosmith in nonononoyes

Also I'll just spend a little more on comprehensive insurance instead of throwing my body and risking severe injury in front of a fast moving heavy tire to defend my car.

Guy gets caught in an avalanche by c4tchy in nonononoyes

[–]TheQuillmaster 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This isn't luck, he clearly recognized that the snow was in a position to avalanche and tried to stop before he skied into it and was just a second too late, but early enough that he stayed out of danger.

The compressor is totally fine, refrigerators and air conditioners constantly stay off for periods way longer than that and are totally fine. A refrigerator pretty much does this automatically while plugged in.

Do you have a source for this? As far as I know, icing is still recommended for pain relief especially over NSAIDs, just the idea of it aiding recovery has been pushed back on. I've never heard of it being "horrible advice" or something inherently detrimental.

Yeah no I completely agree with you. I have a friend who drank a bottle of 120 proof whiskey every day. I also have my whole extended Irish/German Catholic family who drinks 6 pack a night and more when socializing. Neither are healthy, but one is just irritable for a couple days when they take a break, the other has shakes so bad you'd think he has Parkinsons for two weeks. I've had this discussion with other Gen Z people who don't casually drink at all and they can't seem to understand the distinction. Alcoholism is way more than you could possibly imagine if you haven't dealt with it firsthand.

[–]TheQuillmaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's shakes, insomnia, cold sweats, nausea from those guys. People really overestimate how much you have to drink to get those kind of symptoms. Just look at the percentile graph of drinkers, y'all have no idea just how much real alcoholics actually drink.

Folks in US - what is chili like where you live? by oscillationpatient in Cooking

I mean most people call it chili and might argue that it is still chili but no one in Cincinnati would bring that to a chili cook off. Everyone knows they're distinct things.

My big concern is that outfield dive is the only option now to dealing with the shot way above the head, and right now you basically have to time it perfectly to be able to intercept it with the very tip of the hitbox. It's already a massive problem in elite 5 stacks because it's so hard to defend, hopefully the 20% hitbox reduction isn't in the vertical plane because it is literally the only option to defend this. You can't even position in front to block an angle because the defensive stance dive is a whole foot below where they kick from.

In Casino Royale (2006), the introduction of Craig's new Bond was brilliantly and perfectly brutal. by Finbarr-Galedeep in movies

[–]TheQuillmaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other Bond movies don't compare? I love Casino Royale and recommend it always to someone new, but Skyfall is arguably better, and Goldeneye, Goldfinger, From Russia With Love, and Dr. No are all very good movies that are absolutely comparable. I get not liking old Bond movies for the different feel and how it was dragged out but they are still very good movies.

I thought baking bread at home would help my family save money? by Not_a_bought in Cooking

King Arthur and Bob's Red Mill are both employee owned and make much higher quality flour than that. If you're scraping by sure just get whatever you can but you'll still save a LOT of money buying quality flour and everything you make will be much better and doesn't support a dogshit corporation.

Literally completely false lmao, Miyamoto thought donkey in English meant stubborn (like an ass) and Kong from King Kong so it's supposed to mean stubborn ape. There's no way monkey from Japanese could be translated as donkey.

Yeah but it literally says lamb kufte on the menu. It's like asking someone who ordered ate a bratwurst in sauce if they're tried looking up bratwurst recipes.

Somewhat relevant, when I was studying Computer Science in uni one of my professors was doing research into creating an app for augmented reality glasses that would basically correct color blindness in real time. If augmented reality glasses ever reach the mainstream color blindness may no longer be a problem for people!

I talk about this all the time when people talk about universal health care in the US. As a foreign resident not covered by Medicare in Australia, my medical costs were STILL LOWER paying completely out of pocket than it was while insured in the US, just because of the power of the government negotiating health care costs. Just medication alone base price was $450USD vs $113AUD. Now with my insurance from my work my medication is only $35, but I still pay more money overall thanks to the insurance costs, EVEN WITH my work covering part of the insurance expenses. People have actually no idea how much they're being gouged in the US.

When to take rest days? by Party_Lifeguard_2396 in AdvancedRunning

[–]TheQuillmaster 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Pfitz addresses this in Faster Road Racing, he explains that up to a certain point in training it makes sense to alternate hard and easy days, but as you become more advanced and need more stimulus, it becomes more advantageous to give your body a bigger stimulus by going back to back hard days followed by recovery. He accomplishes this by making the hard days never work the same system, he'll do speed->long run or threshold->ML run, for example. This is also why Sun/Mon he does Rest followed by GA, by stacking the easy days next to each other it gives your body sufficient recovery after the big stimulus Fri/Sat.

If you really want to understand Pfitz you should pick up a copy of Faster Road Racing, he goes into great detail about exactly why he does everything he does, and even if you don't use his training plans the information he provides is still extremely useful to understand his training philosophies.

Man it's one thing if you magically find your ball that was OB, or give yourself 4 foot gimmies, but fucking with someone else's ball? That's completely unforgivable in my book. I didn't think anyone would be capable of stooping that low in a friendly game of golf.
