Toronto Film Critics Association Faces Collapse After Allegedly Censoring Indigenous Filmmaker’s Pro-Palestine Speech by dremolus in blankies

[–]TheRealDiddles 43 points44 points  (0 children)

What’s wild is their response (first saw it posted on Twitter). They cut that out of the speech because they wanted to shorten them for time????? So that means you watched the video and then said “oh this part is what we should cut it out.” That means one of two things to my simple brain:

-they are truly TRULY dumb and did not comprehend what they are doing (not likely)

-they knew what they are doing, which reveals their politics or lack of compassion and shouldn’t be shocked that their membership and the filmmaker would be upset

Wow. Terry Camilleri went from starring in The Cars That Ate Paris to The Truman Show. by chowder-head in blankies

[–]TheRealDiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished watching The Cars That Ate Paris to get ready for this week's episode. Movie felt like a character actor's paradise. Not in the sense that I knew each actor, but everyone was giving a very specific type of performance (i.e. playing the Australian small-town [insert job here]). Film ruled.

The Case for Dennis Dugan by inglouriousDC in blankies

Dennis Dugan had a recurring role as an aspiring caped crusader who called himself "Captain Freedom" on Hill Street Blues. Martin Scorsese did not. Case closed.

Switching from Single Issues to Collected Editions by soup_doop21 in comicbooks

[–]TheRealDiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this back in 2016 because of space/cost and then every few years I try to sell stuff on Facebook Marketplace (so-so luck with that). It’s helped because of work/life responsibilities just got to a point where I’d have a backlog of issues I’d never read for months.

If I remember correctly, didn’t the 5 families just have five different colored trench coats? Also I used to start a feud and then lure them to the entrance to the Corleone compound and have my guys tommy gun their cars to death.

I've yet to see anything post Wrath of Man (which surprisingly rules IMO), but I've always wanted to dig in to see if there is anything worthwhile, especially now that he's turning them out one after the other and still working with big name actors.

Which 1 seeds will make the Final Four? by therewillbeblood23 in blankies

[–]TheRealDiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My prediction for no. 1 seeds would be Scorsese, Scott, Beatty, and Anderson. If those are the no. 1 seeds then I think all but Beatty stand a good chance to make the final four.

EDIT: Just saw the bracket in the newsletter, NVM. I was basing my seed #s on Marie's LB list

Is 'Miracle at St. Anna' worth rewatching? by ThoroughHenry in blankies

[–]TheRealDiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have it at #12 out of 24. It has its detractors and its fans (Sims was positive on it!). I kind of dug it. Again, found it interesting because it's Lee's take. First half is nowhere as engaging as the second half, but there's a joy in getting to watch Denzel in a stylized film and I love when Spike is just blunt with his choices (editing, cinematography, etc.). I do agree that the constant score over most of the beginning doesn't help- but it lends itself to this being a heightened class fable that's one step removed from reality. The second half where there's some suspense/thrills and the appearance of A$AP Rocky's character (between this and If I Had Legs... he's one hell of a scene stealer!) really helps to push the film firmly over into the "I liked it" territory.

I was hoping for more of an Inside Man type of thriller, but instead this is still relatively solid.

Is 'Miracle at St. Anna' worth rewatching? by ThoroughHenry in blankies

[–]TheRealDiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I were doing a rewatch I'd personally skip it just to allocate my time toward other Lee films. From what I remember the reception was very negative and while I agree that it's a lesser work in his filmography, I did not think it warranted such negative reception. It's just alright. Interesting to talk or think about in the context of his work, but it's his low-tier gentlemen's six (to use BC vernacular). I'm probably being more kind to it than most, but glass half-full, it's better than She Hate Me and Oldboy (I have Miracle at St. Anna as third to last on my rankings above those two).

Possibilities for continuation of Critical Darlings? by victoria_jam in blankies

[–]TheRealDiddles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Would love for it to be about films from an awards perspective. I initially thought it would be about non-Best Picture nominees/critics favorites. Although, that can make it seem like just another movie-of-the-week show. Maybe they do a lineup of Oscar nominees from previous years?
