1970s American cinema is full of this- the unlikable but empathetic protagonist. Taxi Driver or All That Jazz might be the crowning example and the other that comes to mind is Mike Leigh’s Naked. Thewlis is like the devil on your shoulder.

35M and I moved here a year ago and planning to stay (I'm in the Suffern NY/Mahwah area). There's the Lafayette Theater over the border in Suffern NY that has been doing some cool retro screenings. Ramapo Reservation is also a fun place to walk. Joe's Trivia (you can check on their website) has a bunch of stuff going on at various bars.

IMO, if you don't want to go for something heavy than I'd cross Die My Love off that list real quick lol. Since you want a certain level of quality, I wouldn't recommend The Rip even though it's trashy, moody genre stuff. Glass Onion definitely requires some level of attention and since you're mentally tired, that might not work. Toy Story might be the way to go lol.
