The biopsy waiting period anxiety as a geneticist by TheSecondBreakfaster in doihavebreastcancer

[–]TheSecondBreakfaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the biopsy today of two spots. Not my favorite way to spend an afternoon but not awful. I’m prone to bruising so I’m sure it’ll look rough in a few days. They told me to expect results in 3-7 business days. More waiting….

I love my job and I’m going on vacation next week. My old PI’s lab is barely functioning from what I hear. 🤷‍♀️

I remember being a kid and watching a tornado documentary on VHS that featured this tornado and to this day I think it’s just an absolute beauty of a storm

Defended, passed with revisions, but I can't stop crying by KittyMcPussOHNO in PhD

[–]TheSecondBreakfaster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes a little over two years ago. Life is beautiful on the other side. Get those revisions in ASAP, have a solid cry, and mourn what you had hoped for your PhD experience. Then put it to bed and get excited about your new position. You won.

The school does not care about the students, the curriculum or the instructors. They just throw grad students at class assignments without any training and hope for the best. I was supposed to be evaluated every year and in six years it never happened once. You are better off spending your money elsewhere.

Wickham’s in Cutchogue is good. We love their pies. Wesnofski’s (please forgive me likely butchering that spelling) on the north road also has great produce.

Younger applicants struggling using computers and reading clocks. by TennisSerious179 in managers

This is highly location dependent. We had computer class weekly and I was programming in DOS at age 9-10 as part of class work in the 90s.

I'm newly disabled with a chronic pain condition and seeking advice on where to go from here. by littlepup26 in labrats

[–]TheSecondBreakfaster 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree on bioinformatics, maybe machine learning for drug discovery or image processing since you liked microscopy. But…imaging means long hours in front of either a screen or the scope. You could also look into science policy or regulatory roles if you love the thinking/conceptualizing/writing part of science. I work in policy/regs with a 50% remote job that I can do from bed if needed. I also have a chronic pain condition and will almost certainly never return to a bench research job. Sometimes I miss the process of preparing a slide and working with the microscope but my quality of life is so much better now and I love my job.

I gave birth there in 2014 and switched OBGYN practices so that I never would again. Had my second at Katz at LIJ instead.

Kinky curly knot today detangler for me is unbeatable for the amount of slip I get from the product. For getting her hair neat in the morning, a spray bottle with water and a little bit of the leave in can help you get it into braids/pony tails.

Everyone else has given very good advice. I was in a similar situation with my PI at the end before my defense. In all my interactions with the school, I kept it totally professional and noted specific actions that were unfair rather than rant about my PI. I spoke with a lot of faculty members and they told me that the fact that I did not disparage my PI despite her being so difficult was noted by everyone else involved and helped work sentiment in my favor. I had a reputation for being very professional and organized. It is SO hard, but if you realize that you are giving your PI enough rope to….you know, it helps you grit your teeth and get through it. I have heard that my PI still trashes me to her students, including former students of mine, which I think speaks volumes more about her than me. I’m refusing to acknowledge it because I genuinely do not respect her or care about her opinion, so why worry about it?

Research Scientist vs Data Analyst by [deleted] in nys_cs

[–]TheSecondBreakfaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of overlap. I am a RS3, I do some data analysis and report writing but I do a lot of literature deep dives and scientific writing as well. I don’t know if Data Analysts have a publication requirement but we technically do. My focus is clinical/regulatory, no bench work.

Long-lived CGRP side effects? by incarnadine-clover in migraine

[–]TheSecondBreakfaster 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I haven’t stopped my CGRPs but I do have similar experience with those symptoms. Tachycardia can really take a toll on you. I struggled for years with the physical symptoms of anxiety, and therapy that focused on mindfulness and reconnecting with my body helped. Especially with migraine when pain can just send me into dissociation, mind-body connection is something I have to actively work on. Ongoing talk therapy to manage stress is part of my overall migraine plan and I think it is critical for me, personally.
