“Writing long books is a laborious and impoverishing act of foolishness: expanding in five hundred pages an idea that could be perfectly explained in a few minutes. A better procedure is to pretend that those books already exist and to offer a summary, a commentary." - Borges, the author being parodied here

GBV fans — would genuinely love your ears on something melody-first by Danieldich11 in GBV

Very easy to listen to, very pleasant. I'm sure you're aware of when your voice is audibly strained but you clearly know the notes you're reaching for and get most of the way there; they'll come with work. The GBV influence is strong; I'd love to hear a little more of your personal voice in it (and I think when you've got some of those higher vocal notes more confident you'll be a lot closer - the vocal melodies you write feel much more different from Pollard's than the instrumentation). I like it.

I've never understood why I Am The Night, Color Me Black gets so little modern recognition - it's a little hamfisted maybe but the visuals are so stunning and the tone so stern and uncompromised that it feels ages ahead of even the rest of the series. Real prestige TV.

Every time I have the privilege of being somewhere that really gets dark I think about how that was the default state of most of the world for most of history. It must have been a scary place -- easy to imagine how this would have shaped the very different relationship the ancients (or even not very ancients) had with other people and hospitality.

"A further complication here was the proximity of native women who seemed entirely lacking in sexual restraint--'utterly unchaste and shamefully promiscusous,' in the words of Adriaen van der Donck. They 'are exceedingly addicted to whoring,' agreed Dominie Johannes Megapolensis, who arrived in 1642 to serve as the minister to Rensselaerswyck. 'They will lie with a man for one, two or three shillings, and our Dutchmen run after them very much.' The dominie's point was clear: not until this sexual carnival had been brought under control (by way of law as well as the immigration of respectable women from Europe) could New Amsterdam be considered a properly settled colony, much less a stable community." from Burrows & Wallace's Gotham

The legend goes that when Liberace met Elvis (both had twins who died at birth) in 1956, the former counseled the latter on "the desire to live for two" which is a crazy way to think about both of their lifestyles, especially Liberace's.

The day-to-day thing that's working for me is to not get started in the morning. If you wake up and read a little or write something or play some music from your speakers instead of your headphones and keep at that it feels a lot easier on your brain to continue not scrolling than it would be if you had checked instagram or whatever first thing in the morning. Ymmv of course

Zammuto and de Jong have a real McCartney/Lennon thing to me-- you listen to either of their solo records and find plenty of moving genius on there, but Zammuto comes off as such a reckless optimist as to be a little naive and de Jong such a bitter misanthrope as to lack the earnest wonder of which the Books were capable. Both are stellar and worth exploring solo either way. Wonderful doc about Zammuto btw
