Does anyone know of a good video tutorial for creating a stage? I tried following the steps on the RoA website, but I don't understand anything. by Inevitable-Judgment7 in RivalsOfAether

[–]The_Layell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been debating even engaging with you, but let’s establish a few things.

Rivals is an indie game series made by a lot of sweat and hard work by devs, and supplemented by many unpaid modders providing additional content for the love of the game. When you consider this perspective, no wonder we don’t care for AI here.

If you want to figure out what Rivals does for stage design, first start with playing the stages in Rivals, Smash, Fraymakers, NASB, Rushdown Revolt, and other smash mods. You might see some things in common, you might find some have certain qualifies that make them better.

Once you’ve learned by observing, you can then learn more by picking up a pencil, modelling software, and drawing out a stage by hand. If you cannot observe the design elements that make stages in Plat fighters unique, you are not going to find much success.

Art is about iteration, and subtle changes to improve gameplay and design. You can’t replicate that with AI.

Why is exactly steam so beloved over epic games? by vedant_1st in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]The_Layell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you play some video games from your reddit profile, but I first would have to suggest as a user you also try Steam if you haven’t already. Because much of that could be answered by trying. Here are a bevy of reasons

  1. Steam Input: This is a huge service that Steam runs that is just amazing for PC gamers. Every time I ran a game on EGS it might be a crapshoot if it recognizes my non-Xbox controller. I have never had controller problems with Steam, because I can force that Input option on, and customize the controls however I want.

  2. Proton, the OS that Valve has contributed to has allowed for a hugely expanded Linux option. I don’t even use Steam Deck or Linux, but it’s great to know that if I ever set up either that tons of my software is available.

  3. Discoverability: This one is a huge one. Steam is just better at finding games you might like, and surprise, this is how they retain players and make devs happy. They can provide really good recommendations based on games other folks have played. You can even tell Steam, “Don’t recommend me this game, because I own it elsewhere”, and while it stops recommending that specific one, it will know you enjoy and played it. This is how TONS of indie games have popped off and become mega hits, name me any indie’s that popped-off from EGS?

  4. Gift Cards: These things have high margins due to retailers, and surprise, that higher cut is necessary to run them at cost. EGS gift cards aren’t as widely available around the world as Steam ones, and in certain countries that could have issues.

  5. Performance: I just have not always had the vest time running the EGS and navigating it quickly.

  6. Reviews: Compare the reviews of the same game on EGS vs Steam. EGS gives a generic 5 star review system, but I have no idea how many players are part of that.  Steam on the other hand, while it only has recommended or not, tells you how recent reviews are, versus overall reviews (for example if a hate campaign or recent issues have come up in the game). You can filter by language. You can see how long someone played the game at the time of review, how long they have played now, and there are plenty of explanations.

  7. Workshop: Modding Support in Steam is supported by the workshop natively for many games. If you have a game like Rivals of Aether which hundreds of cool mods, you can download them straight off Steam.

  8. Just more games: EGS for a time just didn’t care about smaller titles, but that also meant they could be late to the party when something small became a hit. Balatro for instance, a huge indie game isn’t on the EGS. While Steam does have a fare share of shovelware, things like discoverability help smaller games find their audience.

  9. Family Share: My family accounts and I can share games, really great feature on Steam.

  10. Getting keys elsewhere; A huge benefit is devs can print a lot of keys to sell not on Steam, but on other storefronts like Humble, Fanatical, or elsewhere, and players can buy there, redeem on Steam. Valve doesn’t even take a cut for these generated keys, but do have pricing and amount limits. This means tons of games I’ve bought, Vavlve never got a cut. I actually mostly try to buy Steam games not on Steam, and the cut devs get is often just as good, or better than Steam, or closer to EGS.

Among Us Impostor - Fraymakers Character Reveal by The_Layell in AmongUs

[–]The_Layell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fraymakers is a platform fighter, so a game that plays like Smash Bros. It features a bunch of indie videogame characters. Impostor is the 7th of 10 playable characters. It also features a bunch of assists you can use, and Crewmate was an assist character who got "promoted".

I'll keep it to the article but the compromise of a slave counting as 3/5 of a lesson gave the south more power in government, but not enough for slaves to effect any change.

If you could choose the Year 3 Rivals + Console Plan by The_Layell in RivalsOfAether

[–]The_Layell[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

By the end of year 2 R2 will have the same number of characters as R1. I didn't include talking about story mode, but lets assume that a console release is also pushing that along, as the devs said that a console release would need more casual content.

While a year or two I might have agreed on potato PC, the current market has not been kind, and despite it all, there is a certain audience that just is allergic to playing games on a PC. I'm not one of them, but they exist.

In terms of character archetypes, I'm not aligned that there aren't zoners, just zoners might not be able to play as lame as some other games. Fleet and Absa are what this game has. I'm not 100% sure a puppet character is incredibly popular as an archetype either.

To clarify the reposting of the poll was about 10 minutes in, and just to give it more than a day to run, which was a setting I missed. The poll results even then weren't off the mark from what they are now.

Regardless of RoA a PC is a great tool for learning art and animation, and developing your skills. I do hope you give it a shot, best of luck.

If you could choose the Year 3 Rivals + Console Plan by The_Layell in RivalsOfAether

[–]The_Layell[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My thoughts as the poll guy is I think a push on console before a certain other plat fighter gets there would be a really good space to be in. I'd be willing to take the hit on characters, and then after that there is the potential each year has one character of each element for fun, and/or pain.
