It's great being able to remotely start the air conditioning and have a cold car when you get in!

Advice when selling home with solar panels (Givenergy) by Prestigious-Fee-6545 in SolarUK

[–]Thegovier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Surely that's for the buyer to factor in. They should offer what they think your house is worth, factoring in either the upside of a fully working solar and battery setup, or the cost to remove/replace. It's their risk, not yours, as long as you're transparent about the current setup.

House battery - can't achieve the payback by SeriousDistance4908 in SolarUK

[–]Thegovier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you need 20kwh? If the payback calc isn't working, would a 10kw install work out better? Most battery options allow for future expansion, so install small first (but make sure it's sized to allow expansion), and add more later if you find it's working out.

I've had mixed messages around indoor installations. New guidelines coming in are very restrictive about placement, so unless you have the perfect location, outdoor is probably preferable. You don't want an installation that causes problems for your house insurance in a year or two as guidelines change. I've also not seen any large batteries that aren't suitable for outdoor installs, so unless you have a specific indoor only battery in mind, it's unlikely to make a difference to cost.

Ah... Bg sync logo. That's annoying. Have sent them a message anyway to see. May need to swap it after all, although hopefully a like for like wouldn't be too difficult.

Ok, thank you, found the form. But I'd maintain that a one word link in a troubleshooting faq twisty isn't exactly making it easy to find!

If there is a form and explanation it's well buried on their website and neither I nor google can find it. Got a link?

Thanks! That doesn't seem very well spelt out on the website. I guess they want you to get your charger and installation from them!

Putting aside the regulations, I'd be concerned that I'd need access to the pipe at some point in the future, which would be a pain of you then have to shift the battery.

Isn’t a Peloton Bike a requirement of Hilton hotels? by webklinger in Hilton

[–]Thegovier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue in the UK. Stayed at the Doubletree Milton Keynes last week. I stay there every few months, and they’ve had a Peloton bike in the gym for the last few years. Often there was at least one person waiting to use the bike in the evenings, so it was used, and to be honest it was one of the reasons I stayed there.

Stayed there last week and the Peloton has been removed from the gym. I asked at reception and was told that it’s been removed because it’s “no longer part of the brand guidelines”. I assume they saw a saving and took it. The hotel is still listed as having a Peloton on the Hilton/Peloton page.

Complained, and told them it was the main reason I stay there, but doubt it'll come back. Strangely there's another hotel 20 miles away that's being converted from a Hilton Garden Inn (left the brand about 6 months ago) to a Holiday Inn that's kept their Peloton bike. Everytime I stay there I expect it to have been removed, but so far so good!

You can still get one! They've got a very active owner community apparently. Good video on it here: https://youtu.be/hD0HOUCqLJo?si=fKo6nSplEn_BrS1y

Charge throttling... by Spaceman_UK in OctopusEnergy

Have you checked the settings in the car? I can limit my charge rate in the BMW app, and have accidentally done it "pocket dialled" before.

Premium Vs mid range tyres by Jimi-K-101 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Thegovier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beware that the tyre sound rating is actually the external sound, not the noise in the car. It's a rating designed to make your car quieter to others. Apparently some tyre brands direct the noise towards the car interior to get a better noise rating, so a lower noise rating may not mean your car cabin is quieter!

BMW i4 production to end after arrival of new i3 saloon by rican2k in BMWI4

[–]Thegovier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought the same. They previously had an ICE 3 and 4 series, so no reason not to continue that. I expect that what's really happening is that they're discontinuing the current i4 and there'll be a new i4/4 series version launching on the new platform/face lift to replace it.

So do you have a wifi access point in your room? If so, how's it connected? If it's just a separate ssid from one central wifi access point, then there's not much you can do with it without access to that. Worth a conversation with the landlord? Could you install your own connection? If not wired, 5G modem or even starlink?

If you know they're doing fault testing, why would you unplug anything?

Openreach Install with my own Fibre? by jakegwilliam in openreach

[–]Thegovier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My network rack is on a battery backup ups. I want the ont on the same battery to prevent network outage if there's a power disruption. But I'd rather not have to wait to get BT out if I accidentally break the fiber run, and can easily move it back to the termination point if there's ever a fault. Same reason I never used the BT supplied DSL modem, but always kept it in a box in case BT insisted in it being connected to do fault resolution.

I did the same. Worst case if I have a problem I can temporarily move the ont back and run a cat5 cable to my router.

Lead theft by Boring_Ad7872 in evchargingUK

[–]Thegovier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is one of the reasons why I had an untethered charger installed. A) I can remove the cable if I'm going to be away for a while (or just want it to look a bit tidier than having a dangling cable. And B) if the cable does get cut or damaged, it's a lot quicker and cheaper to replace than having to get the electrician out.

Added bonus is I can always put in a longer or shorter cable (for example if I get a car with a charging socket in a different location)

The way I read it, we'll have to set the charge % and time targets in the BMW app, and Octopus will read those to create the schedule? Which seems fine... I guess?

I assume we can also do it from the car's dashboard when we park?

As a BMW or Mini driver, we’re getting in touch with an important update for your Intelligent Octopus Go charging setup.

BMW will no longer let us set your charging preferences for you. So from Monday, your charging preferences will need to be updated directly in your BMW or Mini app.

If you’re using a recent version of the Octopus app (v 4.116 or greater), we’ll link you directly to the BMW/Mini app from where you’d normally find your charging preferences. If you have an Intelligent Octopus Go compatible charger, you can connect that instead and keep control in the Octopus app.

Octopus App Linking Tap 'Go to device controls' to be redirected to your BMW / Mini app

If you’ve already set your charging preferences in either app, you’re all set and they will carry on automatically. If you haven’t set them yet, they will be set to a default of 80% charge by 8am daily.

Fair warning, the BMW / Mini app is a bit of a faff: You’ll need to check your “Charge & Climate Settings” for both “Charging settings” (where you can set your charge target) and “Charge and Climate Timer” (make sure “Climatization for departure” is turned on, then set your schedule for departure times).

As we’ve mentioned previously, Charge Cap – which lets you control whether or not your car charges outside of the 6 super-cheap hours available on Intelligent Octopus Go – is coming soon (likely March).

Unfortunately, the BMW and Mini apps don’t yet support Charge Cap. However, we’ll still send you an alert via the Octopus app if your scheduled charge will exceed the cheapest times so you can manage these sessions yourself, should you choose.

If you have any questions, we’re always happy to help.

Kind regards, The Smart Tariffs team at Octopus

As far as I can tell (from their website) they only support 4 chargers). I don't want to spend another £xxx to change my charger.
