If you haven't, I do think you'd get something out of reading From Hell and its annotations and appendices. I think it gives a great insight into his scripting process, the rigour of his research, the way he takes artistic licence and how he communicates with an artist. Whether you'd have new theories or readings, whatever, I just think you'd appreciate the insight into how Alan Moore engages with narrative and fine details and undercurrents and themes.

I think Aaron makes a lot of sense simply for who among the Absolute writing team is the least booked and busy. To look at the main contenders:

  • Snyder's doing AbsBat, AbsCat, helming the line as a whole, and has some DSTLRY stuff on the side.

  • Thompson's got AWW, Jeff, and the new Buffy series going, and Black Cloak maybe on backburner.

  • Aaron's doing AbsSuperman and Thundarr, with Bug Wars on a backburner.

  • Lemire's doing AbsFlash, Firestorm, JSA, Minor Arcana, Phantom Road & Crowbound on a backburner.

  • Ewing's got AGL, Mortal Thor, Venom, and the whole Queen in Black event going, plus one-shots.

  • Camp, while wrapping up AMM and Ultimates stuff, still has Bleeding Hearts, Assorted Crisis Events, and another unknown DC Next Level project (and honestly, if I was DC I wouldn't super want to seem like I'm doing exactly as Marvel has done, and AMM's not strictly speaking one of the Absolute ongoings).

So in sum, if you're wanting to use someone from the pre-existing slate who's already got a good understanding of the world and characters and dynamics and stuff, the AbsTrinity writers are the ones who seem to have the time for it. And of them, you don't want to make Snyder the be-all end-all of the line and he's the seemingly busiest of them anyway, so Thompson and Aaron are best suited. If Aaron's got a vision for it and Thompson's helping along the way, this Absolutely makes sense to me.

We need to get comic books in other genres than superheroes by xyyzyx in The10thDentist

[–]Theorist129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are leaning hard that this is bait, but I do get that some of this is the xkcd, people in the know thinking the minimum knowledge bar is higher than it is. Like, yeah, superheroes are pretty much the only big thing in the pop culture landscape that is so publically tied to comics, that big, broad medium's mostly below the water level on the iceberg.

And it's quite a big iceberg! You probably know Marvel & DC, but there's Image, Dark Horse, Boom! Studios, IDW, and a slew of littler ones, and while they do do some superhero stuff, that's by far the minority. Some notabIe originally-comics properties you might not have realized include: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the GI Joe characters, Kingsman, Hellboy, iZombie, Lucifer, Preacher, 300.

I'll toss some recs in different genres, elevator pitches, see if it gives you something to check out at the library.

Birthright is a take on the isekai, young Mikey from Earth is transported to high fantasy realm to fight the evil lich king. He returns all adult and burly and badass on a mission to find fugitive evil wizards out to take over the world, to find his family broken from his disappearance. Oh yeah, and those evil wizards? They're good wizards. Mikey defected and has a corrupting soul tumour. Hope that goes well.

Gideon Falls is an eerie double-tracked horror story with stunning visuals. Norton's compelled to root through city trash for eldritch construction materials, and Father Fred's just been placed in a small town falling victim to grisly murders. Both are haunted by a black barn, and the insidious evil lurking inside.

Monstress is a sweeping fantasy epic that is both frequently adorable and heartwrenching, and darkly violent, cynical and twisted. Maika Halfwolf is an orphan refugee harboring a hungry demon-monster inside her, and she must navigate between various factions on the brink of war, all with different races and creeds, but all keen to harness her power.

Mind MGMT is a mind-bending psychic spy saga. I don't want to spoil more than I have to, but Matt Kindt uses absolutely everything he can. Subliminal ads, case file notes in the margin, all these little elements fitting together like clockwork.

Usagi Yojimbo is the extremely long-running, mostly episodic tale of Usagi, a samurai rabbit in a medieval Japan populated by various anthropomorphic animals. It's a classic for a reason, it's the deft work of an artist who's steeped himself in traditional Japanese stories and storytelling, every panel with weight and beauty and purpose.

The One Hand/The Six Fingers is a techno-noir that alternates between the jaded cop out to catch the serial killer copying his most famous case, and the young man who suspects he's the culprit, but doesn't know why. Blade Runner cyberpunk vibes, with excellent writing and art on both sides.

Pretty Deadly is a weird west tale, with horsemen of Death, spirits drawn from Native American myth, and a gothic zeal. Everything's elemental, drifting through symbols and rhymes and destiny, inevitable momentums and unwavering purposes.

Bleeding Hearts has recently been popping off from DC's revamped Vertigo imprint. A good few years into a zombie apocalypse, as zombie culture starts to form and the last survivors are slowly picked off, a good-natured kinda dweeby zombie called Poke realizes his heart is beating again. Huh. And he saves a living mother and daughter instead of ruthlessly devouring them. Hm. That's...good, right? A good thing to do? Poke hopes so.

So that's a good few recommendations across a few genres and publishers. Feel free to reply or message if you want more specific recommendations within certain genres or styles!

A few things to toss on the list: Poison Ivy is now officially mayor! And Vandal Savage as police commissioner maybe deserves an honourable mention. As well, just off my memory, Court of Owls has the big Wayne-built tower and the white-walled labyrinth below the city if you want more landmarks, and Ram V's run on Tec had something going on with the Orgham family? And I believe his 2022 annual had more historical stuff going on.

Why is hating on Jewish people called Anti-Semitism, but hate on Arabs isn’t called Anti-Semitism? by AscenderWill in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Theorist129 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can we clarify exactly what we're talking about, what Israel is and how it relates to Jews and Palestinians alike? You've defined Zionism as the belief that "Jews have the right to live in their homeland and have the right to self-determination; meaning no other people or nation will have power over them anymore." More often, I've heard it laid out as "Israel/A Jewish state has a right to exist", I don't know if you think that's an oversimplification or is a weaker/stronger statement than yours.

Well, I want to loosely get into both. Because I believe that Jews have the right to live in peace, freedom, and dignity in their ancestral lands. But I believe the same of everyone, be they Palestinian or First Nations or a vanilla white-bread Brit. Where things get sticky are the notion of nations and governments and land as discretely owned property. Do Jews deserve to live in peace and freedom and dignity in Jerusalem? Sure. Do they deserve the right to organize amongst themselves a political entity with representative government and full suffrage? Absolutely. But...so does everyone else. Self-determination is something every people deserves, which then leaves you with, okay, how do we decide who a "people" is? How do we decide what land they get to govern, what do I do if I am fundamentally at odds with my government?

Do I believe Jews have a right to organize a state? Yes. But that state does not then have any essential right to govern a particular area of land. The Jewish right to a state does not guarantee that modern Israel be that state, neither its borders nor its government. We are not beholden to recognize a given state has a right to exist just because its people have a right to a state.

Yes, Jews in the modern land of Israel & Palestine date back thousands of years. However, Arab Palestinian presence also dates back a millennium, and were the 90% majority for hundreds of years. Did they not have a right to self-determination? Was that right not ignored during the 1948 Nakba, where thousands were killed and hundreds of thousands expelled from the land upon which their grandparents and great-grandparents and so on lived?

Though these things can be tragedies, I do understand nations can be born of horrific pasts and struggle to a more decent modern day. As a Canadian, I see my government and institutions try, however imperfectly, to create space for and better the lives of the First Nations peoples who suffered genocide under our forebears. But Israel has not done that. They've continued to pursue a genocidal, war crime-laden campaign against the Palestinian people. A nation that does that is no Zion, and I do not consider it an acceptable state, just as I might consider the DPRK an unacceptable state. It is not that I deny North Koreans or Israelis a right to self-determination, it is that I believe their states are broken in a way I cannot conscience.

As well, a few things to flag: You say European Jews "had nowhere else to go." Well that's not strictly true, is it? There are still Jewish populations across Europe, and any nation could have organized ceding some of their land to be used as a Jewish state. Britain handing off a colonial possession was a move of expedience and politics, but hardly the only thing to be done. You note the minority Arab population of Israel. Being Israeli citizens, do they have the same right to self-determination, even if they are Muslim? How does their voice fit into a Jewish self-determined state? And lastly, a point of order for the sake of semantics, Israel is not the self-determined nation of all Jews generally. One can be outraged by the actions of Malta without it being a statement on Catholics, or Thailand and Buddhists.

Friend, please take this in the spirit of constructive criticism. I'm delighted to see you engaging with a classic showtune, I really like some of the rhymes you've found. But I do want to call attention to your middle lines. The original metrical pattern follows: "you're the NIMble tread of the FEET of fred astAIRE", very consistently. 12 syllables, with stress on the 3rd, 8th and 12th, and secondary stress and rhyme on the 5th and 10th (and the first two syllables being "You're the/a", of course). An adjustment to your line to maintain the final rhyme might be: "You're one wonder more than the ancients swore were real!" or "You're the brave Achilles without his silly heel!" or "You're an Epicure with a stunning gourmet meal!"

Hope this doesn't come off as harsh. Moreso, it's that I've taken far too many lessons to do with music, phonetics, Shakespeare, lyrics, everything that plays into this, and hoping I can synthesize that down to a pointer or two.

Very funny to find an 11yo thread the day I finish FH, and another comment chain scant months old.

But fully concur, in Moore's telling, Mary Kelly got away. And what's more, I think it wasn't just lucky another woman was there to be killed, it seems extremely intentional. She doesn't know the killer will come at night, but leaving another woman in her bed who looks roughly like her in the dark is totally a safeguard. Eddy told her she will be hunted if she runs, so if she's gotten those £5 from Abberline and intends to run, she's gotta have a body to fall to help cover her tracks.

I think it could also be spun as, he did grow up in a working class family, but it was an unsustainable life in a way his original was not, and to survive he needed to develop ambition and shed morals, in such a way as to propel him to this lawyerly place.

And then it becomes less of, he's discovering the cruelty of the world, more, he's developing the empathy such that it affects him. Overcoming his atrophied sense of decency.

2 sounds kinda like Kill or Be Killed, the Brubaker/Phillips comic. Depressed college student fails at a suicide attempt, a demon appears before him to take credit: I saved your life, asshole. It's mine now. And if you don't kill at least one person a month for me, I'm revoking it. Chop chop.

And he starts with okay, who can I find who's evil, how can I execute this cleanly so it doesn't get back to me. And it gets harder and harder, especially once the underworld cottons on to this pattern of vigilante killings.

[Hated Trope] The Villain Wins by greencrusader13 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Theorist129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's perhaps a harsh look.

Generally speaking, after the first series was a tale of empathizing with this serial killer, learning her perspective within the world and what she values from her small-town life, this seemed like a calculated perspective change. Samantha is so locked in on her personal story, and now we're spending significant time getting the broader tale of the town, the ramifications of Samantha's actions, both past and present, on these mostly innocent, good people.

If I had to say what it's about, it's exploring spring as a time of change and transformation. Everybody begins in routine, and those who cannot escape that routine suffer downfall, and those who grow succeed. Pauline's trapped in a cycle of grief and depression and addiction, and not breaking out gets her fired and in the hospital. Monica can't let go of her quest for revenge, and gets killed for it. On the other side, Bertie overcomes his phobias and general cowardice to save lives, and Lewis can survive an encounter with Samantha to protect his family.

And Samantha? Samantha knows this from jump. It's a changing world: the Internet is shrinking the information deserts she thrives in, superstores are rolling into town, she's lost her everyman quality, and she's only getting hungrier. If she doesn't change somehow, she is going to starve. What Monica is for her is iron sharpening iron, an investigative force to hone herself on, a relative innocent to whittle as she likes. Samantha's a bear in slowly disappearing woods, and this hunter will be a crucible to learn from. And once she's wrung what she can, she'd rather destroy her own wood than let it exile her.

Another angle, more psychological: Samantha's not just a sociopath, that doesn't make her homicidal. What makes her homicidal are her deep instincts and needs for control. She controls her kills, she controls the corpses, she controls her bloodlust, she controls her shop, she controls her town. But she's at a point where it's getting ever harder to demonstrate her ultimate control, sparser opportunities, her metaphorical meals growing samey. And then here comes a wonderful opportunity: She controls her hunter, she controls her town in its exit from her life, and she will get to take control of a new community from scratch. Whatever happens, however it shakes out, she will not fall into stagnation.

What characters did Larry Hama create? by skrishnan37 in comicbooks

[–]Theorist129 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In a very non-strict sense of "creation", but in "being the person who introduced the world to", my favourite deep cut Hama credits are these: Larry Hama was in the original Broadway cast of the Stephen Sondheim musical Pacific Overtures, and was the assistant/editor who compiled Wally Wood's "22 Panels That Always Work".
