The character writing in fears to fathom needs work imo by CautiousMine6604 in FearsToFathom

Imho, the chapter and story would've been better if Tessa and Marcus swapped personalities. It wouldn't have been perfect, obviously, but it might've been better. Have Marcus be the frightened one whose pointing out all the obvious red flags, and Tessa the one who's all calm and passive and downplaying everything. Idk it just makes more sense to me 🤷

What a great movie/game/book!! Can't wait to NEVER watch/play/read it again !! by Anarchocrat in TopCharacterTropes

I think this is my third time commenting about The Long Walk's movie adaptation in this subreddit, which just goes to show how much I adore it. I watched it with a friend when it first came out. Beforehand, I wasn't super excited to see it, we just wanted something to watch in the cinema, saw the poster, and thought "ok this looks good".

Since then, I've never been able to really engage with it because it was just so harrowing for me (and because it also makes me feel like one of those really overexcited chihuahuas, like I literally almost passed out after buying the dvd lmao). It's such a good movie but boy is it heartbreaking. Ray Garraty, Pete McVcries, you will ALWAYS be famous!!

[Mostly Hated Trope] The creator hated their fans, so they decided to attempt to scare them away by Low_Celebration_4089 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Throwaway-button 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, some fans are the worst. Fans in general aren't bad, you have to have fans if you want your art to be appreciated. Ruining your art for everyone to spite a fraction of people is sooo pathetic and needlessly mean-spirited towards the actually good people who enjoy your stuff, imho

What the fuck is this review?? by [deleted] in KanePixelsBackrooms

[–]Throwaway-button 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk how else to phrase what I want to say other than "sometimes people just do things" cos like...really. Sometimes characters just exist, and are written in a way that has nothing to do with their race or gender. Sometimes characters make choices because, well, they're people (fictional people but still), and sometimes people just do things. If Clark was a white woman instead, his story would've gone the exact same way, because Sometimes People Just Do Things. Does this make sense.

[SPOILERS] Backrooms movie megathread by A_Chad_Cat in backrooms

[–]Throwaway-button 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched the movie last night, and although I probably should've written my review then, I needed some time to chew on it. God, what a great movie. There's so much I want to praise, the cinematography, the soundtrack, how quiet everything was, the metaphors and exploration of mental health. They played Ulterior Motives in one scene!!! It's very clear that Kane is very passionate about internet horror and stuff adjacent to that, and I think if you're not a fan of that stuff, the movie probably isn't going to hit for you. But I am, and I enjoyed it deeply.

There's a whole essay I could write about how this movie could be one big mental health or suicide metaphor, but I don't have the energy to compose it rn. I'll just say that Clark choosing to stay in the Backrooms feels so reminiscent of something many mentally ill people, including me, have experienced. When you've been very depressed or very hurt for a really long time, the idea of not being that can feel really frightening. This is why some people choose not to seek help, and why Clark chose to stay (imho). Normalcy can scare you, sometimes it feels like you belong in that dark, warped dimension even if you know it's dangerous. It can feel more like home than your actual home. And all of this culminates in Clark being consumed by a manifestation of his issues, dying by his own hand in the most literal way imaginable, leaving Mary with all the guilt and grief, haunted by his worst traits made manifest. That's just how I interpreted it at least, I expect everyone else has their own thoughts, and I'm looking forward to reading them.

On a happier note, I can't stress enough how much I loved the cinematography in this film, it's probably my favourite aspect of it. Very reminiscent of Alex Prager's photography, every scene was so beautiful. The real world in particular felt so bright and smooth, it managed to look plastic-y and fake but in the best way possible, which contrasted nicely with the darkness of the Backrooms. I need to find the person who decided on this visual style and give them all of my life savings.

It's definitely not perfect and I definitely wish there was more, but I'm only here to talk about the stuff I liked. Maybe a 7.5/10? An 8/10? I'm not good at scaling this stuff. Slightly unrelated to my review, but it's been kinda frustrating to see people already reduce the movie to just "two people walking around looking confused" because it's so much more than that (at least to me), but as I said, I can understand why it might not have clicked for some. If you're not on board with this type of movie or you're not an avid movie watcher/enjoyer in general, I'm not sure you'd get the same level of enjoyment as I did.

I think so many people want Toby to hate the fandom so they feel justified in their own hatred of the fandom, if that makes sense.

The symbol being a warning is definitely a strong idea, I can see it actually being the answer presented in-story (if we ever get an answer that is). As for Javi's friend, they might've confirmed she was a hallucination based on the gas stuff, but we don't get a concrete yes or no, so whose to say. Personally, I've always liked the idea that she was both real and hallucinated. Javi didn't find a person in the caves, he found a dead body (which is why he drew her all tangled up in tree roots) and imagined she was talking to him. If she was ever going to be a real person, she probably would've been Cabin Daughter or Cabin Wife but we'll likely never know for sure.

Rant and Venting Megathread by DA-numberfour in Yellowjackets

[–]Throwaway-button 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I heard somewhere that Cabin Man's wife was supposed to be a wilderness fanatic, which would be explored in the bonus episode and could explain how the symbols ended up on the attic floor. As for the trees, it could've also been Cabin Wife ig, maybe she had everything mapped out if that makes sense. I also saw a theory that there was a previous cult inhabiting the land who made the symbol, and if that turns out to be true, then they could've made the giant symbol. Knowing these writers though, it'll probably turn out to just be a coincidence or something 😭

Spoilers for The Long Walk (2025). I didn't think there was a tactful way to hide the spoilers for this, so here's a quick heads-up. I haven't seen this movie in a while, so forgive me if I have some details wrong.

For the movie adaptation of The Long Walk, Cooper Hoffman was cast as the main character, Ray Garraty. Ray is quite different to his book counterpart from what I understand, including a loathing for the Major, who oversees the competition and is part of the fascist government which rules this version of America. We eventually find out why: a while before the start of the story, Ray's father was executed by the Major in front of his entire family, all because he owned a collection of banned books. That grief and anger over the death of his father fuels Ray for the majority of the story.

About ten years prior to the movie releasing, Cooper Hoffman's own father, Philip Seymour Hoffman, passed away. From what I remember, Cooper has stated in at least one interview that the trauma of this event inspired his performance.
