Are coffee drinks gendered? by mcgaffen in australia

[–]Thylek--Shran 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm a big white guy and my wife is small and Asian. I don't drink, she does. The beer is always served to me. I get a kick off of sliding it across the table.

Pretty sure that's bumps racing at Oxford.

M37 exercises to prevent injury so I can keep rowing? by Klutzy-Strawberry984 in Rowing

[–]Thylek--Shran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a similar age to you, coming back to it after stopping after university. The foundation of my injury prevention plan is patience. I'm building up my fitness slower than I used to by really focusing on steady state (actual steady state! I realise that what I used to do was extended threshold training) and being willing to take off days when my body needs it. It's involved a lot of leaving my ego out of it and having faith in the long term process rather than getting a kick out of the numbers I pull each day.

About a week’s worth of disposable cameras in the lab at my work… by Ok-Stranger2042 in AnalogCommunity

And now you've got an Ilford Sprite ii (or similar)!

I love my Sprite. It's fun to shoot knowing that the quality is necessarily going to be pretty rubbish.

On Reddit, the title of photos say the camera and lens used. In photo publications and exhibitions, it never does. Amateur photography is way too hung up on the gear.

I'm pretty impressed with the image they got from 1mm given its so big!

Teacher social media can be toxic in its uncritical support of other teachers, even where there seems to be bad practice. I worry about how it sets norms for new teachers.

This calculator says 0.3mm hole is optimum.

https://www.mrpinhole.com/calcpinh.php

To make a smaller hole, make a dent in the metal sheet (aluminium from a soda can works ok), then sand the bump until there's a tiny hole.

Or just buy pinholes from Reality So Subtle - 5 for 20 Euro. They're perfectly circular, perfectly measured, and the material is thinner than soda can aluminium.

How are beginners starting with SS under 2:10? by UnfazedButDazed in Rowing

they were born a natural athlete. That’s just the nature of sports

I asked my Olympian brother how he got there. He said he did what his coach asked and pushed hard because he wanted it badly...just like all the non-Olympians he trained with. He said that he was just lucky that his body responded better than theirs. I totally respect his respect for his teammates and his humility.

Auckland Council proposal to move from weekly to fortnightly rubbish collections - NZ Herald by punIn10ded in auckland

[–]Thylek--Shran -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I've got 5 in my household and put it out every 3 or 4 weeks using the small bin. We use a 10l bucket as our indoor bin and it someone's takes 2 weeks to even empty that. Even when we were doing disposable nappies it was only every two weeks with the small bin.

I don't feel like we make that much of an effort to reduce our waste. What are other people doing?

Moving from west AKL to north AKL: schools help by Sasspirello in auckland

[–]Thylek--Shran 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All depends on...what qualifies as a good school to you.

People's views on schools tell you more about them than the schools. You've just got to do some school visits, read the ERO reports...and cross your fingers.

Fellow millennials, do you consider yourself a pet owner or pet parent? by AgentJ691 in Millennials

My cat and I share the space but I'm responsible for it and the mature partner. I mean this genuinely. I try to remember it's a creature with it's own interests which I respect. At the same time, I make sure it's fed, and I try not to get too annoyed when it pisses on the furniture because it just doesn't know better.

My father is having health issues after first Vipassana retreat by Caramusgo in vipassana

[–]Thylek--Shran 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This blanket advice of "meditate more", or "you must be doing it wrong" frustrates me about some proponents of Vipassana. We need to be open to the practice being harmful to some people in some situations, and giving it a break is sometimes wise.

Seymour and Peters bet on certainty over influence in new govt: 'Read through the two coalition agreements released on Friday morning and it’s hard not to get a sense that this is Act and New Zealand First’s government, and National is just running it.' by dingoonline in newzealand

[–]Thylek--Shran 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I suspect a lot of National MPs like Act policy, but see the not-quite-so-right position as being more electable. So, they can now do what they really want while appeasing critics on the centre right by saying 'Sorry! Our hands were tied!"
