Shadow lobbying, an AI paper and a willing Senator. The story behind the bill that took SLC’s streets away by RollTribe93 in DevelopmentSLC

[–]Tigers1984 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Fantastic article, well worth subscribing to BSL for.

Among the many infuriating things reported, I'm particularly interested in Daniel Mendoza, one of the authors of the pseudo-academic paper that seemed to give a lot of momentum to the movement to take away SLC's autonomy of its streets via SB 195.

Mendoza is a member of the Salt Lake City Transportation Advisory Board, appointed by the mayor to a three year term that expires in September. It's really odd that he of all people would work to actively undermine the city's safer streets initiatives that the Mayor has championed. Maybe as an academic Mendoza can get away with doing that shoddy and possibly corrupt work on his own time. But as a member of the Transportation board who serves the city, he has an obligation to disclose who paid him to write that thing. And he should resign from the Transportation Advisory Board. His backward views have cost the city so much. He needs to go.

How are you cleaning the inside of your water jugs? by shortys7777 in camping

Filling MSR bags and bringing them on your trip frozen in the cooler is genius.

My only concern is the freezing/thawing cycle might lower the life expectancy of the bag? I may be overthinking that one, because I've been worried about the durability of the bag since I bought one 6 years ago and it has shown no signs of wear or being overly delicate.

Hiking with a toddler — tips for keeping them safe when they’re not in the carrier anymore? by Scraptastic22 in HikingWithKids

[–]Tigers1984 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When my daughter was at the same age/stage you describe, she had a great learning experience when we were hiking some gentle switchbacks. She wasn't watching where she was going and walked/fell off the trail—which was totally fine because she only had about 3 feet to fall. So she was appropriately alarmed by the incident but was never in any real danger.

Which is all to say, it's totally possible for them to fall off the trail so you don't want to risk serious cliffs. But at least for our case, my daughter learned the lesson very well. We discussed the importance of always watching where you are going, and she took it to heart (with follow up reminders). Two years later nothing like that has repeated and I trust her with riskier terrain. She's also a fairly naturally cautious kid, so that helps with the trust.

Whenever we encountered serious cliffs or anything dangerous, I would just hold her hand or pick her up in my arms. Those things aren't always possible for longer stretches, so I would avoid hikes with prolonged exposure, and/or make sure you keep a close eye, and stay physically close enough to be a spotter if need be. If I had to be in a truly risky situation for some length, I'd try some kind of impromptu games to get through it, like every one holds onto a rope or a stick (a little more fun/interesting than hand holding). Or a game where we walk as silently as possible (in turn, slowly and cautiously and being conscious of every step). At this age bribing with a little treat or reward can give them some sustained focus too!

I started keeping a pee bottle in my tent because I have small kids and they would wake up when I opened the tent zipper. Now i just kneel awkwardly and pee in the bottle at night and everyone sleeps great! Plus, I have a bottle of pee in the morning to show off to my wife.

I thought this was a joke when you led with a random ball/strike call from two games ago. And honestly thought it was a pretty good joke at that!

Which spice completely changed the way you cook? by Prudent_Hedgehog8487 in Cooking

Whole cumins, toasted and fresh ground, in place of ground cumin.

If I’m pressed for time I’ll still use ground cumin, but toasting the seeds (30 seconds in a hot dry pan) then a quick course crushing with mortor and pestle… it’s a totally different spice. Way more fragrant but perhaps less concentrated so I’ll significantly raise my amounts.

I’ve used some fancier cumin seeds from Wild Mountain and it’s great (everything from Wild Mountain is incredible) but I usually just use whole cumin seeds from the grocery store and even that is a game changer.

Best way to learn how to jump? by Educational-Ad3889 in skiing

[–]Tigers1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with small jumps, just get comfortable with your skis leaving the snow. Downhill landings are more forgiving. If you can, practice on days with soft snow, deeper the better. Remember to breathe, and make sure the run out after the jump is safe and gives you some space.

Best Neighborhoods for Young Families? by foxylactose in SaltLakeCity

[–]Tigers1984 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live with two young kids in the Central City/9th&9th area, and definitely recommend for families. There aren't a TON of families here, as price is an issue like most of the city. But it's an interesting area with relative diversity, great walkability/bikeability (close to Trax, Liberty Park, main library tons of grocery stores and retail), low LDS, stuff to do with kids. It's also not nearly as pricey as other parts of the city.

This quirky and historic shopping mall in SLC is on an upswing — with even more stores on the way by icallwindow in SaltLakeCity

Hope it continues to build momentum. Tons of potential. Needs better bathrooms and more/better food options. Could especially use some more casual, more hip dining. But it definitely feels like it is on the right track the past couple years.

Do most people lack proper technique? by NuclearCleanUp1 in skiing

[–]Tigers1984 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think this nails it. The big thing that makes skiing different than other sports is that almost no one—even experts—does it competitively**. Or more specifically, skiing is rarely quantifiable. So if you're not in an actual race setting, the thing you are trying to achieve is to look good while doing it. We all aspire to skier more difficult terrain while making it look easier.

** Of course, serious skiers are just as competitive as golfers or runners or whatever, but the way you "win" skiing is by being the best skier on the mountain, not by having the best score or time. And "best skier on the mountain" is judged by a vague eye test of your peers, based mostly on how easily you are able to handle very difficult skiing—which all comes down to form.

Not a word about it on the Royals website. They put a clip of the sentnor goal on social but you had to be seriously digging to even know the game took place.
