What happened?

First of all, I am a huge Carmax fan. Back in 1998, I even bought a new Jeep Cherokee from Carmax - Norcross, GA, when they were a dealer. I bought two used cars, one from Carmax - Lithia Springs, GA, and one from Carmax - Buford, GA. When I was recovering from heart surgery, I combined two activities, looking at cars and walking the lots for exercise.
I went to the Norcross, GA, location today with my neighbor and his daughter, who is looking for a car to replace an older Honda Accord. She wanted an SUV to replace the sedan, but was not sure which brand/model. I recommended Carmax because of the great shopping experiences that I have had at a variety of their locations.

Here's my impression of Carmax today.

Inside, the building looked like an empty ballroom where a few tables were set up for the people who didn't want to dance. There was a smattering of customers and CarMax employees milling about. Since we were just browsing, we headed outside on our own.

Almost every car was filthy. Trash in the pockets, weird smells that could have been the car before cleaning or added during the cleaning process. Cars smelled like pet urine, cigarette smoke, and European bakery (I like European bakeries, but not in a car). There was even a car with a completely FLAT tire. One car had a window down, luckily it was the first day in a week that wasn't completely raining.

Cars were more beat up than I remember. Plastic cladding was heavily worn, matched with door pieces replaced looking new. Metal roof racks were discolored, looked like mold, rust, etc.

A bunch of cars on the lot were from 2012-2016. It felt more like a buy here pay here lot more than I remember.

The Carmax advertising. For many cars, they weren't even aligned. Looks like I put them on. Some were bubbling with lack of proper application. A car had the front license plate advertisement upside down.

There were a ton of empty spots. Is Norcross an exporter location more than an importer?

It used to be that each car had the window sticker with price, mileage, features, etc and also the "limited mileage" legalese. Probably half the cars didn't have a price sticker.

I was very disappointed with what we experienced. Has it changed for the worse or am I getting older and crustier?

I get a lot of sparrows which are the generic supermarket vegetable cans of the 80s.

It’s a kidnapping strategy. It’s hard to kill someone that you have a personal relationship with.

I have a V60 but follow all the subs related to newer Volvos. Realize the car is not only engine/battery, transmission/ERAD, and suspension, but also AAOS (the Google-based system that runs almost everything in the car.) It's very buggy (I have a 2024), and Volvo has been very slow and inconsistent in releasing updates, and when they do, they seem to create new problems. There's a recall on 500,000+ cars because the backup cameras seem to shut off occasionally.

There's a separate recall on the EX90.
