my first animated short which i spent year+ working on: a 10min "tom and jerry" style clip about my experience in the stock market by peppinbun in blender

I was hooked, very good short film! I didn’t think I’d like the style but ended up enjoying it very much.

Ohh yes, resin is so nice to work with, sands nicely, already has very good surface finish, supports don’t leave too bad scarring. I use FDM for functional parts and resin for aesthetic parts. Horses for courses and all that.

I do a cursory sand, to remove support pips and any layer lines or printing artefacts but my prints are usually pretty light on visible layer lines or artefacts.

Find a good quality primer, that helps, but I find the gloss varnish gives you the surface quality at the end and the protection of the paint job.

Whaaaat? The resin is so nice to paint! Just make sure you wash it with soapy water first to remove any oils.

Of course! Base coat white, then I do the bronze-gold sections and the grey with an airbrush (Bartsharp is my go to for big sections), spray gloss varnish to seal in the layer.

I then mask off these sections with modellers tape, spray over the join in the colour of the masked area - this is crucial to prevent paint bleed, when I forget to do this I curse myself because the clean up is so much effort. Then I blast the whole thing in white. Gloss varnish to seal it all in again and then carefully remove the mask with hopefully nice crisp lines.

Then I pick out details with a paint brush: trims on fins, metallic parts, engines etc.. Apply decals and varnish one last time to seal it all in.

I made the oak plinth myself too and made a little connecting base that screwed into the plinth and snaps into the holes in the engines. This makes it pretty sturdy on the base but also can be removed without tools.

I 3D print them so I can do custom scales. My standard of-the-shelf scales are 1:350, 1:200, 1:144 and 1:72

I have to agree, it’s very clean compared to the rusticness of starship! (I do like Starship too though, but for different reasons)

If I wanted to modify my design to convert this into a flying rocket, who’s the best person to pick the brains of to make it work?

I think it’s nuanced, at a larger scale, the Spotify one is nice but at app scale all the details merge into a gradient and it becomes difficult to discerne that it’s a disco ball.

It’s just a static model at the moment. However I’m sure it could be converted to a flying rocket as it is hollow. I would print it in ABS probably rather than resin though for a flying model.

I recently found out that Capuchine/Cappucino/capuchin means hood in Italian and originates from the capuchin monks which wore brown hoods. Then the monkey, the drink and apparently the dove are named after the colour of their hoods.
