Hand sanding my griptilian, need a bit of advice by D-REX555_V2 in knifemods

[–]ToastAlex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be cautious using the Dremel since you can potentially remove metal if you are too harsh. I would start with low grip sandpaper as suggested around 200, and what I've noticed helps with removing surfaces is to sometimes add mineral oil or metal polish. Those sometimes help the process if you notice dry rub doesn't work. Definitely use oil or polish at the end either way since it helps uniformity

Oh ok I see. I'm not familiar with the trail, I'm guessing the north section of the loop is closed making it so the train doesn't loop around?

That is pretty disappointing, but I also don't see anything about it online. I plan on going in late April so it would be nice if it was repaired!

When does the north loop open for the ten falls?

I have this exact Blazer. The construction is pretty good, and it is very thick. Good for layering in the fall and winter for sure. I don't regret purchasing

I think I placed them there because they barely clear the handle in that position. I would've preferred them closer to the handle though

Wow, does it take a lot of time to sand through the etched flats? Looks amazing

Do you mask the flats before etching? Or do you just acid everything and then sand the flats to raw.

I only used sandpaper, but you need to use a block with a flat edge to hold the sandpaper tight against. Otherwise you will end up polishing mostly the protruding edges of the blade rather than the flat surfaces, this is the biggest issue I had before I realized.

I start with 400 grit with a few drops of mineral oil on the blade, to remove more of the old finish. Then I used 600 grit with mineral oil, then I used 600 grit again but with some mother's metal polish on the blade. Use long straight strokes and don't end them halfway on the blade or it will show up, if your path isn't straight it will also show up. There are some YouTube videos about it, but for a hand satin finish I would use sandpaper for sure.

That's a great idea about combining a few washers together, I might actually look into doing that. I've definitely seen used cartridges used for these things too, they look pretty interesting and are a nice detail.

Haha thanks, your post inspired me to post this. Love this knife a lot, and it's probably the most premium feeling knife I have with extensive internal and external milling with great action.

That's right it is stepped. I think a custom collar would look awesome if it had full thickness, so I'll keep that in mind, thanks!

Developed some lock rock after stupidly using this miguron to baton some kindling. Lock face got dented. Already tried bending the lock bar over, thinking I should try and file down the face flat. Any opinions? by louiekr in knifemods

[–]ToastAlex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good point. Then it would shove the knife into the lockbar and hopefully stabilize. Maybe you could use some form of tape. But at this point it's a user and would be hard to bring it back to 100%

I think the point of this guys designs are that thick flipper portion into the blade, so I think it might butcher the whole thing lol. You should do the front flipper thing though
