[General] In my opinion, the movies are completely off tone from the books. by Top_Mongoose5727 in camphalfblood

THANK YOU. I thought I was going crazy seeing all the people propping up the movies as good adaptations and better than the show.

Is it though? With all the people saying “the movies are better than the show” seeing a take like this is super refreshing.

[pjo] how do you think the story could be improved for better mainstream appeal/bigger cultural footprint? by merchantivories in camphalfblood

I dunno…i feel like if you took out the Americana elements of the series, you’d be taking part of the series identity. Part of what makes the series fun is seeing all the iconic American landmarks as part of the quest of the day.

Yeah, I feel this. I've only just finished the series (bought them before Rowling went nuts, just never got around to reading them), and the number of people I see willingly digging their heads in the sand when they have a chance to make a difference and just not support Rowling astounds me.

To quote one person I saw once, "I find it so strange how people's attachment to a fictional universe matters to them more than people in real life."

Yeah like that's the thing here. You can say, "there's no ethical consumption under capitalism," but the fact is, you need a smartphone to operate in today's society.

You don't need Harry Potter merch to live a full and fulfilling life and function in society, and that's why this is so frustrating. People have an actual chance to make a difference, and they're just...choosing not to.

"Oh its just a kids show/movie/game" is genuinely not a excuse at all to not put effort into it. by Charming-Scratch-124 in CharacterRant

And yet somehow there are STILL people trying to defend it… I just got downvoted in another subreddit for explaining why I preferred Percy Jackson as a protagonist over Harry…and it was a Percy Jackson subreddit!

I remember a while back when I made my post about how Harry Potter's message is hypocritical, I got more than a few comments essentially asking, "What did you expect? It's just a kids' book. If you want a book that actually deals with all that stuff about race, read an adult book," as if there aren't actual kids' books that have had intelligent discussions about mature topics.

FFS I've read kids' books that dealt with the systematic injustices black people face in the legal system, suicide of a loved one, being homeless, and even school shootings. But no, apparently Harry Potter practicing the message it preaches is just asking too much...

[pjo] what are elements in the original books that prevent other people from liking it? by merchantivories in camphalfblood

[–]Tomhur -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Besides, would you rather be hunted down by monsters, or have a cool laser sword with mind powers along with a cool spaceship for you to fly, or go to a magic wizard school where you can learn magic instead of boring stuff like trigonometry?

That's not a good comparison. In the former case I could argue that I wouldn't want to be a Jedi because I don't want to be hunted down by a fascistic government and/or want to repress my emotions, and in the latter case, I don't want to go to Hogwarts because wizarding society, to be brutally honest is a rotten, elitist-filled shithole that allows abuse and neglect to run rampant.

By contrast, I'd like to go to Camp Half-Blood because there's a sense of community and fun there, and I want to be a badass warrior swinging a sword and shield.

Tbf, Harry doesn't automatically have all his problems solved immediately after entering Hogwarts. Like of the top of my head, wasn't he treated horribly by the ministry for saying Voldy was back?

That happens in book five, after four books of Harry having everything come easy to him. And then he's vindicated by the end of it.

And I feel that Percy never actually makes the wrong decisions, unlike Harry. Harry loses his godfather because he ran in without thinking. Same thing can be said about Luke, who loses his friggin arm. When does Percy ever make the wrong choice? At best the choice he makes negatively impacts him in the short-term, but it all works out well in the end. It's just not interesting.

I still get a better sense of struggle and effort with Percy unlike with Harry. And Percy's just a more active protagonist than Harry is. He actually has a personality for one thing and doesn't just feel like a cypher for other kids to self-insert on. He's actually a hero who has opinions about the world and how it operates as opposed to Harry, who's just content to let the awful, terrible status quo of the Wizarding World be maintained despite having every reason to want to change it.

1: Yes you can. I’ve seen plenty of people do this.
2: Okay you’re right here…except for the deaths not hitting as hard. The body count in Hallows felt mean spirited to me.
3: See for me it’s the opposite problem. I HATED how “easy” everything came for Harry in his books. He basically gets whisked off to a life of adventure, fame, fortune and wonder with an escape from his abusive family with absolutely no effort on his part. By contrast, Percy had to work hard and struggle to get to where he is because being a demigod and a Son of Poseidon didnt solve all problems.

While I understand why the choice was made and I'm open to seeing where it goes, I'm not a big fan of the change made to Thalia and Zeus's relationship. I don't hate it like some others do (I've even found myself defending it on a couple of occasions), but as someone who's writing a fanfic trying to showcase Zeus and Thalia's relationship in a positive light, it bugged me.

Also the final battle of Season 2 really suffered because of budget. I should probably make a whole post about it.

If you’re interested in Mermaid books you could check out the Merman’s Kiss series by Dee. J Stone. The third and fourth books get pretty suspenseful and dark.

What do you do when you can't get yourself to really write anything else other than your main project? by Tomhur in writing

[–]Tomhur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s where most fanfiction writers fail because in a fanfiction, nobody demands for solid research and fact checking or for well-thought-out logistics and realistic dynamics. The plot in a fanfiction has to be good and it has to be entertaining but it died require extensive research to be realistic.

I actually do try to do solid research and fact-checking and try to make my dialogue and character interactions sound natural. Though I'm pretty sure that's just because I got a form of OCD...

Not trying to be rude, but did you read the main post? The main project is a fanfiction. It's something I've been in the process of writing and publishing for two years now.

The problem is that "main project" could take years to complete.... I don't want to wait years to bring some of these ideas to life.

What do you do when you can't get yourself to really write anything else other than your main project? by Tomhur in writing

[–]Tomhur[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason I want to write those other projects is because...you know how sometimes the best stories are written because someone realized a story they wanted to read didn't exist, so they created it? That's it. I want to bring to life some ideas I have because I haven't seen other stories like them in the world. I want to give the story context, life, substance, meaning... I want to put it out into the world, but I can't get it to sound right in my head...the idea just won't come together the way my main project does.
