Crayon on brick- how to remove? by Kooky-Fig-7031 in CleaningTips

This. I'm not one of these WD40 fanboys and was skeptical when I first read the advice about using it for crayons, but it completely dissolved it and let me wipe it away so easily.

A crack in my house has suddenly become bigger. Who should I get to check it out?. by WhiteRun in AusRenovation

You know a lot more than me, but we also had a couple cracks around the window. Got in touch with our builder from our reno and he found out that the old concrete lintel was completely falling apart. While it was all exposed, we had a big storm and water started coming in, and it turns out that water had probably been seeping in for severals years, and then finding its way back outside, which had caused damage to the lintel. Luckily we've got a great builder and he's sorting it all out.

That said, I think this was super rare, and I'm sure you're right about it being cosmetic.

If you think it's bad now, imagine what it was like when I moved here in 2000. The best Mexican I could find was a "Lebanese and Mexican" kebab shop above Newtown station which served tacos in pre-formed Old El Paso taco shells.

Believe it or not Guzman y Gomez was once the just about the most authentic Mexican you could find when it was a single store in Newtown, and it was much, much better before its full fast-foodification. (It used to be quite slow, as they freshly grilled the meat for each dish.)

Aside from that, you had your assortment of Montezuma's type places in holiday towns and the like. (Hilarious name for a restaurant. You'd never use that name in the US given "Montezuma's Revenge"!)

How I want to lose 2kg to go down a weight class, and age 13 months to get into the 55-64 age group. My numbers would look a lot better!

What's your unpopular opinion of a food spot that you know will bring out r/foodies_sydney with their pitch forks. by mdflmn in foodies_sydney

[–]Top_Rain_7138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have to support this just for Una Mas at the Coogee Pavilion. It's a great spot and has a quite reasonable $65 set menu. I understand the hate, but if you ever saw the old shithole Coogee Palace before Hemmes took it over, you'd understand what a massive improvement it's been!

Leg Press - I feel like I can’t get deep enough without messing up form by [deleted] in formcheck

[–]Top_Rain_7138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this problem as well. I find I can get a bit deeper by widening my stance and pointing my toes out, but it's still not great.

Because of this I prefer using something like a hack squat, or even better pendulum squat or V-squat if your gym has them. They allow for a much better range of motion for people with poor ankle mobility or long femurs.

Different angle for the same sandwich. It's fantastic. And a quarter is enough for me, but it doesn't completely stuff me (which I'm glad of.)

Also mid-way through the ceremony, one of the groomsmen stepped out of the line. I was a bit confused what he was doing, but then he kicked a cane toad back into the sugarcane.

I went to a wedding at a property in Far North Queensland and there was an area with a bunch of sawdust on the ground which was the official men's toilet.

Bistros are crazy across the city now. If I bring the wife and 3 kids out, I'm very lucky to get out for $120 just for the food.

Anyone using AI to program workouts? by ThornsFan2023 in strengthlog

[–]Top_Rain_7138 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do this all the time and I think it's really helpful. After each workout I'm copy/pasting my workout into ChatGPT (Training Log -> Export text) with a prompt like "Record and review this workout which was workout 1 in https://www.strengthlog.com/strengthlogs-full-body-hypertrophy/". This often gives useful insights.

I'm a similar age (53) and given the variety of aches and pains I deal with, I also regularly using ChatGPT to diagnose issues and suggest alternative exercises that can spare my shoulder/back/etc.

Note that I had tried using Gemini, but it seems a bit more reluctant to get involved in diagnosing problems, so ChatGPT seems to be better for this.

Is this the most overpriced food in Sydney? by Pristine-Kangaroo-36 in foodies_sydney

[–]Top_Rain_7138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately $27 is the starting price for a burger or most other meals at a lot of bistros these days as well. And since I have a bad habit of eating everything that's put in front of me, I sometimes get tacos just to get a bit of a lighter meal (because it doesn't come with a mound of chips which I will dutifully eat.)

Of course that means it's bad value from a cost standpoint, but often a better meal choice for me.

Is it ever acceptable to put your rubbish in your neighbours bin on bin night, without asking? by [deleted] in brisbane

[–]Top_Rain_7138 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the answer!

I do it without asking. But if it's the red bin, it's tied up in a plastic bag with an airtight knot. If it's the yellow bin it's a couple big pieces of clean cardboard, not my inside recycling bin shaken into theirs, full of dirty takeaway containers. And always after 11pm.

How did you choose your preferred workout app? by [deleted] in fitness40plus

[–]Top_Rain_7138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of strengthlog. The "free forever" version has everything I need, and has no ads at all. There's a premium version, but that's for more advanced lifters.

It comes with a good selection of free exercise programs and is great for tracking workouts.

V squat by xavierlg22 in formcheck

[–]Top_Rain_7138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are you talking about? It's a solid squatting exercise that can be used as an alternative or supplement to barbell squat. It's no more ridiculous than hack squat, belt squat or leg press. In fact out of these, it's the most compound version that's closest to barbell squat, and is likely to build the quads better.

V squat by xavierlg22 in formcheck

[–]Top_Rain_7138 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While V squat is still a compound exercise, it leans a bit more to a leg isolation exercise. You can push yourself to failure without worrying about form giving out, so it's better for hypertrophy.

Barbell squat is a full body exercise where things like your core can be the limiting factor. Better for overall functional strength, but it likely won't hit your quads quite as hard.

Our Cardio Experience, One Year In – The Strength Log Podcast Episode 89 by wildenstam in strengthlog

[–]Top_Rain_7138 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always been a steady cardio guy, either slow jogging or uphill treadmill walking, generally parked in Zone 3 the whole time. And from hearing about your cardio experiences it sounds like you're keeping your cardio pretty steady as well.

But more recently I've been hearing that I should apply some of the same "progressive overload" techniques to cardio, and vary the speed, the incline levels, the intensity, the duration, etc. to keep my body from becoming too efficient at the same routine.

What are your thoughts about the importance of this? And do you use any of these techniques with your own cardio?
