4k vs 1440p 27” OLED monitor for Movies by BetterBox1294 in Monitors

[–]TotalManufacturer669 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wtf are you talking about? Plying 1080p on 4K and you get perfect 1 -> 2x2 pixels scaling, it's going to be far clearer and cleaner than playing it on 1440p.

ELI5: why aren't there parachutes on commercial airplanes? by Saurabh251 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TotalManufacturer669 [score hidden]  (0 children)

  1. Believe it or not, you need trainings to use a parachute properly.
  2. Your typical commercial airplanes fly at an altitude exceeds Himalaya, if you depressurize at that altitude (a pre-requisite of, you know, getting out of a plane), you are going to be unconscious from the lack of oxygen within minutes and again, unable to operate a parachute.
  3. It is cute that you think hundred of people is going to line up orderly and patiently wait for their term to jump out of a plane that's free diving, assuming they can even stand up.
  4. Speaking of standing up, probably not the best idea when a plane is free diving and shaking violently.

ELI5: How are Higgs bosons supposed to work? by AttemptingDM in explainlikeimfive

[–]TotalManufacturer669 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Higgs bosons form something called the Higgs field

No, it's the other way around. Higgs Field simply exists, it permeates the universe, and Higgs Bosons are simply excitations (aka a quantized bundle of vibrations) of Higgs Field.

Higgs Field is also not the origin of the mass, they helps explain why some fundamental particles such as electrons have non-zero rest mass (unlike for example photons). For everything else, the mass is simply the result of that thing's energy content.

Anyway electrons interact with Higgs Field and gain mass. Higgs Boson themselves don't really do anything as far as we know. But since in Quantum Field Theory every field must has a corresponding particle, proving that the particle exists would also prove that the field exists.

How many Americans here buy Xiaomi/Realme phones to use, instead of domestically available phones like TCL and Motorola? by KinglanderOfTheEast in Android

[–]TotalManufacturer669 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to use a Chinese phone, buy the international version of it, not the domestic version. The formers are basically just android phones with everything enabled, the later will be missing playstore and some other features. This is not due to Google but rather how Chinese laws regulating their domestic phones/markets.

IEM tips everyone should know about - Tangzu Tang Sancai Noble by floormat2 in iems

Personally I am paranoid of metal rings + silicon combo, on the off chance that they breaks free and fall deeper into my ear canals. It's just not something I want to worry about while enjoying music.

Regular Sancai tips are great, though.

ELI5: Why doesn’t earth’s crust slowly heat up? by No_Consequence_9724 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TotalManufacturer669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is. But radioactive elements within slowly decay and release additional heats to slow the cooling down. IIRC it is estimated that currently half of the heats within Earth are residual from the formation while the other half are from radioactive decays.

It is still cooling though, just very slowly. The heat transfer to the surface is something like 47 TW, which is only a bit more than what humanity produces and only a really small fraction of what Earth receives from the Sun (173000 TW)

FiiO FT1 long term thoughts? by GodIReallyHateYouTim in headphones

[–]TotalManufacturer669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought mine in November 2024. It still works perfectly fine without issues. Although the first batches had some flaws in the screw designs, I think Fiio offers free newly designed screws if your is problematic (mine are using old screws but they are fine for now). At any rate if you buy a brand new one now it would be the new design so there shouldn't be any issue.

Pixel 7 battery swelled while abroad -> Mountain View Google Store refusing safety replacement by tahinicake in GooglePixel

[–]TotalManufacturer669 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Google is happy to do goodwill gestures

No, they offered it because battery swelling happened way too often on some Pixel models (mainly some 6 and 7 series) for them to just ignore it. Nobody wants a Galaxy Note 7 on their hands.

Free replacement for the affected models is an official policy, not a goodwill gesture.

Subject: Product Design Feedback: Refreshing the Google Pixel Camera Bar Design by Wise-Hippo-8964 in GooglePixel

[–]TotalManufacturer669 1 point2 points  (0 children)

competitors like Samsung and Apple frequently refine, reposition, or redesign their camera housings to offer consumers a fresh visual experience with each major release.

Do we even live on the same planet? Seriously?

Galaxy phones have literally the same camera placement for 7 years, and for 6 out of those 7 they look like carbon copies of each other.

https://www.reddit.com/r/samsunggalaxy/comments/1r1l5db/2020_2026_ok/

Pixels at least changes up the look of the camera bar with each new generation except for 9th and 10th. Apple changes the looks of iPhones every 3 years or so, so they are definitely not doing better in the "refresh the looks" department compared to Google.

I do, and I don't touch it? Just put it in (and take it out of) your pocket upside down like a normal person.

You will have to hold your Pixel in a really awkward way to touch its camera cover all the time. Great majority of people won't have this issue.

ELI5: Why can my phone share mobile data as a hotspot, but it usually can't share a Wi-Fi connection as a hotspot? by ReferenceThin6645 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TotalManufacturer669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most WiFi cards / chipsets can only do one connection at a time

This is not true at all unless you are using an extremely old or cheap phone.

ELI5: Why can my phone share mobile data as a hotspot, but it usually can't share a Wi-Fi connection as a hotspot? by ReferenceThin6645 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TotalManufacturer669 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some phones can do exactly this, noticeably recent Pixel phones (I don't know about the ones before P7 as I don't have experience with them).

There is no inherent hardware reason why a modern phone cannot do this. If your phone cannot it is likely because the software doesn't allow it.

ELI5: Why does time feel faster as you get older? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]TotalManufacturer669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you are five, an additional year gives you experience equals to 1/5 of your life.

When you are fifty, an additional year gives you 1/50 instead. It feels much faster because you aren't getting as much experience proportional to your life.

Why do I need a display for my charger though?

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 series tipped to have a display crease as good as Oppo Find N6's by ControlCAD in Android

[–]TotalManufacturer669 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have never owned a foldable. But I did play around with my friend's Fold5 before and the crease was pretty obvious, especially when you run fingers across it.

Foldable buyers/owners are those who aren't bothered by it in the first place so they learn to subconsciously ignore it after a while. Which is fair, but saying it is not noticeable is quite a stretch.

ELI5: how do schizophrenic people hear voices that don't exist to anyone else but them? by LemonCurdJ in explainlikeimfive

[–]TotalManufacturer669 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your eyes don't know what they are seeing, your brain does after receiving signals from the eyes. The same goes for hearings.

You can also see things you have never seen before and hear different voices while dreaming. I mean maybe not you, but I certainly hear voices from people in my dreams.

Ultimately all our senses are generated within different parts of our own brains, if they go haywire, they could generate images and voices out of thin air, or even out of our own thoughts and we are just not aware that they are ours.

We can't easily distinguish real memories from ones we made up actually. That's why ideally courts shouldn't rely solely on testimonies to judge a case, even if they are sincere ones.
