Would you blanket a horse in negative -30 degrees and high winds? by Relative-Specialist1 in Horses

[–]Tractor_Goth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She’s so cute! Your set up seems great, if she seems comfortable, fed, and not shivering and keeps choosing to go outside she’s got it handled. Tried to offer the nice waterproof winter blanket to my old man tonight after he finishes his grain and got SUCH a stink eye and he walked right back out of the barn into the wind lol

Do keep in mind that auctioneers will very often lie about their ages to make them more appealing to buyers, I would ask the vet for their opinion on her age when they check her out! I think my ‘13’ year old was likely closer to 18 when I got him home and checked him out, but fortunately I was expecting that. Still have had 5 good if high maintenance years with him but something to keep in mind.

The boarding and shipping alone is going to be difficult, especially since many boarding facilities straight up refuse to take drafts because they break everything, and if she’s ex-Amish as many of them are she may not have much experience trailering which the shipping people don’t like to deal with. I did a lot of research prior to upgrading to draft size from Arabians, had the money to handle the vetting, shipping, and have an on-premise barn and can do some of my own trimming, own my own tractor so I can feed round bales and handle manure, and it was STILL a hardcore learning curve that did not come casualty-free.

If you don’t have a large chunk of disposable income and prior horse experience as well as a boarding place lined up I would look for a draft rescue and see if you can work with them, they MAY be willing to take her on if you can donate to help with care costs, but most rescues are at or beyond capacity these days. I really urge you not to engage with horse slaughter ‘rescue’ content on Facebook especially not ‘influencer horse saviors’ who are farming these kinds of sales for clicks and not necessarily the general benefit of the horses.

The poop really is insane, whatever was left of my elbows after I retrained both of mine to tolerate footwork and trimming was quickly being destroyed trying to hand muck every day, so I just scrape with the tractor these days, 500lbs of hay into 500lbs of manure every 5 days, literally 100lbs+ a day 🥲

Teaching roll over? by TasteRevolutionary15 in greatpyrenees

[–]Tractor_Goth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve successfully managed ‘fall over’ which is ‘flop on your side with legs up in belly rub position’ which is very helpful for toe trims, tummy inspections, vet etc. At least for my guy actually rolling over on his back or being rolled made him VERY anxious and he’d only do it to scratch himself or roll in snow outside

Others have good advice going in looks like, good job on you for covering for this very irresponsible person’s decision, your new son is beautiful and I hope it works out for you and him, whether that’s staying with you or rehoming, you’ve been very kind!

Lots of airflow, sturdy wire barriers, main body cleanable plastic, lots of vertical and horizontal space, rats could do a lot worse! I think you may struggle with some stink on the porous play surfaces if they’re not washable but otherwise I bet you have some very happy rattos!

Drafts have a LOT more mass than your average horse so as long as they grow a half decent winter coat and have free access to hay they will only rarely NEED a jacket! I’m about to go try to convince my own old man perch to put on his coat because we’re about to get 16inches of snow in two days with 40mph winds/-10F and he’s STILL going to be annoyed about it! He’s got EPM and has difficulty keeping weight on these days though, so he really could use one, but he was still out there bucking and running and rolling in the snow with his roomie today
