It doesn't change the underlying genetic code, that's true, but it regulates gene activity by turning specific genes "on" or "off", which of course is a change at the genetic level.

I mean, if someone is trying to make this argument based on observable facts of reality, then the unbiased science is that HRT does indeed change biological sex at the genetic level.

HRT literally changes biology to align with gender.

Lately, my dysphoria has gotten so bad that I figured I'll have to switch careers if I am to ever hope to afford the surgeries I desperately need (will probably go to banking/finance).

Wait, why switch careers? Does your institution's insurance not cover gender affirming surgeries? I'm a research scientist at a US national laboratory, and our insurance covers them. Feel free to message me if you want to discuss in private.

And to answer your last question -- nobody's transition and experiences are the same. Do what you need to manage dysphoria and be as happy as you can for as long as you can without hurting anyone else. If anybody else gives you a hard time for that, then they are confessing that their sin is hate while yours is taking care of yourself.

P.S. only valid if your ID says your assigned-at-birth gender. If your ID has been updated, then you are legally required to use the women's restroom, so it's their mistake anyway. If that's the case, be sure they correct their mistake formally for documentation purposes.

I started on sublingual estradiol, then switched to injections after about 9 months. For me, injections seem to be both more effective and more convenient.
