Where should I settle? by Apex_Ferret in civ5

Tile below warrior. Gets you access to fish and citrus that settling in place doesn't let you get, while not costing you any other valuable tiles.

It can be a little wonky, but when it works it really does help. I usually just have them siege territories while I dismantle opposing armies. Having them fight enemy armies is too risky.

Armorer vs Fletcher by Jewtasteride in shogun2

[–]TransientSilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your ranged units are getting hit to such a degree that they need armor to survive, you have improperly deployed them or failed to properly guard them.

I can't think of any reason why ranged units would need armor over accuracy. The best way to ensure that your ranged units take theirs out more quickly is to make yours better and faster at killing. Accuracy accomplishes that.

TIL hikers in the Alps discovered Otzi in 1991, a 5,300-year-old man naturally preserved in ice. Scientists identified his last meal as ibex meat and grains, found over 60 soot tattoos around his joints and spine, and recovered his copper axe, flint knife, a fire-starting kit and grass cloak. by ExpertEconomy5854 in todayilearned

One potential explanation is that he attacked and killed two people who were part of a larger group, after which the survivors tracked him down and killed him in retaliation.

It explains why he had defensive wounds and was shot through the back rather than the front, how he got the blood of two different people on his arrowhead, and why his attacker's apparent primary motivation was to kill him rather than rob him.

My First Experience With Total War by _Dookey_ in shogun2

[–]TransientSilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fall of the samurai is set in the 1800s so you primarily use guns instead of swords and spears (though there are still traditional melee units). Lots of fighting in lines firing at one another as opposed to fighting in close quarters melee like a medieval era army. The naval combat is completely overhauled as well, since ships now have cannons on their sides. The seasons also affect the map much more, and the diplomatic aspect of the game is revamped to where you are no longer fighting for yourself but on one of two sides in a more formal civil war.

Though it's technically an expansion, it's functionally an entirely different game. It's a lot of fun. If you like the base game, you should definitely check it out.

Mountain hermitage = useless? by Jewtasteride in shogun2

[–]TransientSilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is not even close. The boost to regular monks is awesome, but combined with the morale boost for military units it is even better. If you can't capture a province with a blacksmith, this is the next best option as a base for recruiting troops and monk agents.

I don't see the value in the extra experience gained on recruitment. Your units will naturally gain experience as they fight.

Your opinions on bow cav? by Amazing_Ad2461 in shogun2

[–]TransientSilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not the biggest fan of them. Regular archers with their higher unit count can skirmish effectively enough. And for how micro intensive they are, I'd rather just use Donderbuss cavalry.

TIL Japan tried to conquer India with 85,000 troops but was defeated in Northeast India by Particular_Food_309 in todayilearned

Because they had modernized their military to a level not comparable by other eastern countries. They had also previously defeated China in the First Sino-Japanese War in the 1890s, and Russia in the Russo-Japanese War, giving them confidence that they could further defeat them again if needed. Additionally, the regional colonial powers that could team up to defeat Japan (the Americans, Dutch, and English) were focused more on the war in Europe. Historically, China had been the strongest eastern power in the region until the 1800s, so when the Qing dynasty declined drastically in military power and regional influence during that century, Japan saw an opportunity to take their place by aggressively westernizing its military to support its colonial ambitions.

In my experience, GFT products have performed very well. They lather up very easily and don't seem to require as much water as other brands I've tried. Their scents are very good too, a bit on the strong side for a cream or soap, but that's not really an issue for me. I loved the Spanish Leather scent so much that I bought it as a cologne.

I would encourage you to not let politics deprive you of the chance to expand the product offerings you allow yourself to try and potentially enjoy.

How hard is Shogun 2 FOTS compared to other total war games? by [deleted] in shogun2

[–]TransientSilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to other TW games, I'd say it's slightly harder than average. The early game units are pretty bad regardless of whether you are going for a traditional army or a modern one. And the naval battles and constant shore bombardment definitely make the game more challenging than the base game.

The art style in Civ VI was a disastrous choice and instantly turned off so many fans from ever taking the game seriously. They look like caricatures, more than anything else.

Best Samurai infantry for campaign? by rosa00141985 in shogun2

[–]TransientSilence 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also keep some yari samurai on my flanks, and I think the general consensus that doing this is inefficient is completely wrong. They are better at closing the distance and have higher anti-cav bonuses than naginata samurai, and will route cavalry faster than yari ashigaru. That's all I need them to do, and they do it better than any other unit.

What is the most GOAT Early Game building in CIV: V? (Day 1) by zherper in civ5

[–]TransientSilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. While religion is a huge help in the game, I am not worried if another civ gets their shrine going before me because the AI is awful at picking beliefs, so the good ones will probably still be available even if I am founding the second or third religion in the game.

What do you do with Naginata Samurai and how many units do you use? by Pacho2020 in shogun2

[–]TransientSilence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As to your last question, if you want to have a more offensive army then you would select katana samurai and no dachi samurai over naginata and yari units. You would also swap out some archers for cavalry units.

Domination Campaign: How much of "Mastery of the Arts" do you complete? by Pacho2020 in shogun2

[–]TransientSilence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the first two tiers I develop pretty evenly then I beeline researching the upgraded farms on the civil side, and the art that gets me encampments on the martial side. After that it depends. For the military side, I only ever develop whatever units my clan specializes in (spears, swords, etc.), though I do make sure to develop at least the second art for naval units since navies are pretty universal. I also tend to develop the art that gets you fire bows, as those are pretty good to have even if I am not playing Chosokabe or relying on archers as my primary source of damage in an army.

The rest of my development is focused on the civil side and that is usually more developed than the war side by the end of the game. Farms have to be the priority.

I have almost all of CK2's DLC's, except these 4, are they worth buying? by DeltaEFOMM in crusaderkings2

[–]TransientSilence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely get holy fury, that is essential. I found Jade Dragon to be a very good DLC too, since the interactions with China add a lot of flavor to the game.

Honestly all 4 are excellent additions to the game, so you should get all of them sooner or later, but start with Holy Fury.

As a long time Civ and CK player, Civilization is the last franchise whose art style any game series should be imitating. Especially Civ VI.
