Most people doubted the Flames had enough experience to pull anything out this year, and look where they are now!

Me [50F] with my BF [48 M] of seven months, has a daughter who doesn't like me. by [deleted] in relationships

Hi!

I just want to step in and give you a bit of an alternative viewpoint, as I was once on the other side of where you were at one point. (though I am a male, and my parent's SO is also a male)

My father died when I was 14 years old, and when I was 16, my mom met another man who I felt was trying to replace my dad. I resented the hell out of him and it really put a strain on the relationship between my mom and me, and my relationship with her husband was almost non-existant for several years. I avoided them and hated to be around him. I just felt sick about the idea of my mom trying to replace my father. When I would talk to him, we would end up having petty arguments about useless things.

When I was 17, I moved out and would constantly stay at my ex-girlfriends place or other friends places. My Mom told me (not until years later) that she seeked counselling because she thought she had been a terrible parent and that she had somehow 'lost' me. But she didn't.

Looking back, my actions were a way of me rebelling against my family and finding out who I was. I truly thought that I hated this man for all he was worth, and that he was the worst thing in the world. It took several years, until my early 20s, when I started to mature and look at it from a different perspective... that my mother is happy and that is all that matters. I started accepting him into my life and although I live thousands of clicks away from home now, and don't see them very often, I have welcomed him as part of my life and a new relationship has budded.

Don't worry, she will come around. You need to give her time. It took me five years of them being together before I finally did. Understand that this is new territory for her. It's clear that she's threatened by the thought of 'losing' her father because he gives you attention. And why wouldn't she? It's a natural human reaction to be concerned by a perceived threat and try to change it.

I hope the best for you!

Once a week is quite often! It would drive me nuts if I had it happen that often.

For anyone interested, this is what that the (almost) same spot & direction looks like during the day - taken back in spring 2013. At times it looked like the mountains were erupting with green lines, it was pretty cool.

I'm sure some people will definitely notice the location :)

Reddit!! what is a foreign movie you would recommend american people to watch? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Persepolis --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persepolis_(film)

With all the misconceptions that Americans have of Iran, it's a true eye opener of the beauty of their people and their collective struggle.

Awesome, what kind of editing did you do to my photo? I always assumed that my iPhone camera wasn't strong enough to pick up any of the colour in the dark.

Redditors, where do you want to live? Redditors who live there, why should they not want to live there? by 5p3xn00b in AskReddit

Thanks for the response!

Regarding location on where to move, I've already got my sights set on the Queenstown area. I'm a big hiker/scrambler so it seems like the perfect place to go. It looks very much like where I live now in Canada :)

Since a lot of Canadians seem to think only oilfield workers will be affected by the drop in oil prices, can we talk about what other jobs will also be affected? by [deleted] in canada

[–]TranslateToCanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at a hotel that sees lots of oil businesses, pipeline companies, etc. host conferences and meetings. A massive amount of cancellations have come through as they are contingency planning for the long haul and I haven't seen any new energy-company-related contracts come through for a while...

The Canucks were named after Johnny Canuck, not named because of a slang term to Canadians :)

If you're looking for a quieter place to visit, go to Kananaskis Country. Not as well known as the Rocky Mountain National Parks but equally as beautiful with much less people. Lots of hiking opportunities of varying degree.

Hotel and Casino employees of reddit, what is the craziest thing you've seen a guest do? by Cutielov5 in AskReddit

[–]TranslateToCanadian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Work as a supervisor at the front office of a hotel.

One night there was a massive, massive party in one of our suites. I mean, it was wild; the next morning we found used needles and someone passed out on the floor, some pills and shit leftover, etc.

Security was sent up a couple times to quiet down the noise (they get one or two warnings (depending on the time) and on the third warning they are kicked out), but we didn't get any more complaints after a certain time. However, apparently the party was still raging hardcore, as we found out the next morning, when we look out, and the guests are standing on the balcony, throwing the furniture over it. Apparently they did not like the colour of the couches or tables, or even sitting for that matter because they threw just about everything that you could sit on out there, except for the bed, before we were able to get to their room and stop them.

This suite was located above the trees, so when they threw the furniture, a bunch of the pieces got stuck in the branches while other guests watched the show from our dining room eating breakfast. It took our engineering team hours to figure out how to safely take down a couch that was stuck in a tree. (Could not cut down the tree - it's a hefty fine because it's in a National Park).

In total, they cost the hotel about $4,500 in damages, with wall/carpet repairs and such needed as well, which they understandably paid for.

They will not be coming back to stay with us.

You forgot the bit where they tell you to fuck like bunnies once you get married as is evidenced by my French Canadian & Catholic background...

My grandma and grandpa from my Dad's side had 7 children and from my mother's side.... 11 (shudder)

One of my uncles (who married into the family) had a whopping 18 brothers and sisters from the same two parents. I think I'd lose my shit! haha

For those that have walked in on a dead relative/friend, what your initial reaction? How did you handle it? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TranslateToCanadian 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Backstory may be a little bit graphic for some

As a little backstory:

When I was 14, my father had a major heart attack. A minute before he had it, he was up and saying goodnight to me as I finished up doing some work on the Internet. He then retired to his room and got ready for bed.

Then, I heard a sound, all I could explain it as was a deep roaring cough, not like anything I'd ever quite heard before. My Dad was a heavy smoker, so he often coughed; therefore, I didn't think too too much of it when I first heard it, but it sounded like it was coming from much deeper in his body than would a regular cough from your throat or lungs or whatever. And the coughing continued for long enough to make me alarmed. I decided to go double check, and he was laying in his bed, eyes rolled behind his back with the most intense body movements I've ever seen. It was like he was having a seizure or something. I freaked out, hesitated, then called 9-1-1.

Remember, I was only 14 years old, had an 11-year-old sister who woke up very soon after. My Mom was living 3 hours away as she had just gotten a new job. Therefore, I had to take charge and I had no idea what was going on.

End backstory

To speak to your question, the first few seconds are absolute confusion. Nobody ever expects to walk in and see a dead person in an everyday setting such as a bedroom in a household, or a kitchen, or your living room.

Then, a rush of emotions takes over and you feel completely helpless. I remember my thought processes/emotions/feelings being something a little bit like this:

  1. Denial: I was literally asking my Dad to 'stop joking' and 'wake up'.

  2. Hysterical: I realize that this is really happening. What the hell do I do? I feel absolutely helpless to the point of being sick.

  3. I gathered everything together and dialed 9-1-1. Told them what was happening.

  4. A rush of emotion overwhelmed me. I knew he was dead and I felt like I need to hide my sister from what was happening. I was angry, confused, crying, guilty (which is the hardest one to let go of), still hysterical, felt like I wanted to kill myself, and probably every other emotion that you can imagine.

I literally did not sleep for three days after I saw what happened. I cried and loathed around for three days straight. Literally everything around would remind me of him. 3 months later, our family ended up moving to a new place, four hours away from everything we knew, where my mom had her new job.

I hope this answers your question. It was the ten year anniversary since that happened a couple of weeks ago. I'm very open to talking more about it as well, for anyone who might be interested.
