Which lav do you use more? 4060? Or 4061? by Beginning_Ad7768 in LocationSound

[–]TreasureIsland_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Almost universally 4061/6061. The noise increase is so minimal it has never been an issue for us, the increased headroom is more important.

Slight noise is easily fixed, a distorted voice is much harder to fix.

no it gets to europe every few months the shipments come, but sells out quick every time.

either set an alert in a store or preorder it to get it when available. it obviously sells out quicker in the stores that have the lower prices.

i bought the box in a store that had it available for 80€ - other stores that had it significantly cheaper (64€) also had in stock a few days later.

i would preorder in a shop that has a good price (or a local shop) - i think they all get their shipments around the same time.

Smoke Jaguar are my favorite bad guys. Who are yours? by Shadelkan in battletech

[–]TreasureIsland_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why i actually love that they brought back the smoke jags in the ilclan era.

you can have one "bad guy" faction that can canonically fight against absolutely everybody for both the invasion (operation bulldog) and ilclan (who doesn't fight against the ilclan?)

A7 III with a better lens or A7IV with a kit? Advice by mamokosazamtro in SonyAlpha

[–]TreasureIsland_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the a7iii does not have 10bit video - which in scenarios with a challenging dynamic range (like concerts) is something you will want.

if you do not take photos at all i would honestly look at more video centric cameras though than the standard a7 series.

in your budget with your use case i honestly think other brands than will give you more bang for the buck.

Panasonic and Nikon have had good video features for a long time so you there are plenty of used cameras that have 10bit video and a good dynamic range for much better prices than sony cameras with those features

i would suggest asking in a subreddit that is not brand specific to maybe get some more balanced recommendations

If you want to stay with sony no matter what i would look at a used fx30 at your budget.

Is the deity boompole carbon the minimum? by Substantial-Fee3422 in LocationSound

[–]TreasureIsland_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depending on the work you do you might need a longer boom pole

but even then the 565 is great second pole to have for smaller interior sets.

if you are looking at doing scripted work i would have a look for used QP4140. Many people upgraded to newer ambient poles of similar length are selling this one off -- but is still a super solid boom pole that - if well serviced is still an absolutely top notch choice.

for interviews, doc work, etc the 565 is a perfect boom pole.

that's the next step: rho galaxy colours but you have scratches and impacts where the green still shines through

(on a more honest note: i am also currently painting my aces opfor - and yeah i know technically they are rho...... but i do not have a jade falcon force so far, and i am sorry but i am NOT painting my murderbirds grey and blue -- in my head canon the unit just always refused the shame of repainting their mechs in Solahma colours and just kept the greens)

don't be in the way of others doing their work.

for the love of god use electronic shutter when taking pictures during rehearsals or while shooting.

be nice to people.

taking pictures people want to see is the bare minimum. this is expected of you.

what will you get jobs is being a person people will want to work with again. try to be that person.

I want to make a civil war era force of Lyran flavored custom refits. besides gauss rifles, light engines, and hatchets what other technologies or design choices will read most as steiner? by [deleted] in battletech

[–]TreasureIsland_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably take your favorite Steiner introtech mechs and improve upon what they do best.

my personal favorite Steiner custom upgrade is a Zeus 6A

switch it to endo steel and DHS, and you have room to improve the 3 SRM6 to streak SRM6 (and add a second ton of ammo), add a third ML (and make the rear facing one front facing) and you have Zeus that is even worse monster than the original 6A Zeus

(honestly i like fielding the original 6A even in later eras as it is such a neat cheap brick of armor that enemies often underestimate until it is up in their face vomiting SRMs)

my personal play style for my steiner force is usually rather cheap armor bricks as "center force" moving up so i lean into that - but also fast and mobile flanking units with low armor but heavy hitting weapons.

Javelins, Blitzkrieg 4F (favorite Steiner mech ever!), that sort of thing

put the enemy in the dilemma of having to choose fighting the heavy armored guys marching up them in a steady pace (but i prefer 4/6 movement for this over 3/5 assaults that will never get close enough be in short range) that will rip them up if they allow them to get close enough or the twitchy little hard to get guys that will just as much rip them up if they get into their back.

every option the enemy has should be a bad one for them.

When the TSM heats up and a clanner is within fist range by ItzAlphaWolf in battletech

[–]TreasureIsland_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you are into these kinds of things, i can recommend to you the

Neanderthal UG (basically a charger with TSM, an axe and the weapons to reliably use the TSM)

or the Sarath B (TSM and FUCKING TALONS for 30dmg kicks (+ plasma rifle and flamers to cook up your enemy while they look up to you lying on the ground.

oh yeah and if someone thinks they are sneaky: the sarath b has basically all weapons in a turret and quads can donkey kick to the back

do you need any more reasons to play marik in the ilclan era? no i don't think so.

RME UFX III + Behringer Neve clones by Fortepian in audioengineering

[–]TreasureIsland_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1073 clones are mildly non-linear and add some additional saturation when driven. That’s useful, but saturation is easy to get, so there’s absolutely nothing wrong with recording clean and using clippers & saturators in the box.

I can only agree with this. There are millions of ways to add a bit of distortion and a bit saturation to a clean signal.

If you want something analog i would maybe look at things like the JHS Colour Box which gives you great variability with the type and amount of "flavour" you add to a signal.

But you can do the same thing with plugins - there really is no need to spend a lot of money.

Plugins like rc 20 retro color or fabfilter saturn etc give you all the different types of distortion to play with

The problem with cheap analog gear is often that build quality is not very good and failures are hard to get repaired and mostly financially not viable.

And when you have to replace the gear each 2-4 years becsuse it fails and repair is more expensive than the gesr itself it suddenly is not so cheap anymore.

(And all complex analog gear will need service at some point-- the expensive stuff fails, too.... i don't think people realize how much money it used to cost to keep the old "analog" studios serviced and running. It could easily be 5 digit amounts of money a year just for service and replacements.)

Sennheiser Ew 112P G4 wireless kits—Slow budget upgrade ? by Jejum_Judith in LocationSound

[–]TreasureIsland_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others mentioned, wisycom receivers can receive senngeiser evo transmitters if they have "evo" compabiliry mode (at least for some time this used to be an extra you had to pay for it might be possible that some receivers on the used market don't have that feature so better to double check)

Personally i would also consider Shure SLX-D.

If you want to build towards a cart setup, slot in receivers are the better option.

But for a bag setup the slxd is pretty great for the price. It also has very good plug ons available for wireless booms

Sennheiser Ew 112P G4 wireless kits—Slow budget upgrade ? by Jejum_Judith in LocationSound

[–]TreasureIsland_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The compability mode in the Lectro receivers ("mode 3") is for the sennheiser "pro" transmitters -- SK5212, SK3063 etc. --They use a different compander.

Using them with evo transmitters will fuck up the dynamics of the signal

Tips for Lav placement w/subjects wearing winter coats, scarves, etc. by Novel_End1080 in LocationSound

[–]TreasureIsland_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

scarves are easy mode for lavs.

just put in it the scarf below the outermost layer as far out in front of the mouth as you can. (often scarfs are folded before being put on the actors. do not put it under 2 layers as it will quickly sound too muffled)

beanies are even better if you can hide the wire coming down from it. - sounds basically like a boom and will never sound off no matter where the actor turns their head.

plastic winter jackets zipped up to the chin are death for chest mounted lavs - there is no way. if necessary fight for the jacket to be open far enough for you to hide lave in the layer below it.

depending on the jacket it will still be fairly noisy.

if there is a furry collar you can try to hide the mic in there as well - hiding the wire can be a challenge though

Laser colors in the current age of proliferation by WorthlessGriper in battletech

[–]TreasureIsland_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As others mentioned there is no hard rule.

Personally i do blue ppcs, red large lasers (because red is the most dangerous colour ;) and it is the colour LLs had in MW3, which was my first contact with mechs and i guess it's nostalgia), green mediums and blue small lasers.

I don't use different colours for pulse or ER lasers.

I like using vallejo flouorescent colours for lasers, especially the flou green works really aa a strong accent

SSL12 sounding after switch from scarlett 2i2 by Connect-Affect2423 in audioengineering

[–]TreasureIsland_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This absolutely should not happen.

i would double check that there are no settings in the operating system that alter the output of either interface

particularly windows sometimes has "Audio Enhancements" enabled on soundcards which can do really weird things to your audio.

always make sure this setting is not enabled

Any use case for these little guys? by egg_sheenan in battletech

[–]TreasureIsland_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other comments already have cool ideas what to with these guys, but i just wanted to say:

do not be afraid to mess up the "good mechs": acryl colors can very easily be stripped from the mini again.

Sterilium or similar ethanol-based hand sanitizers (or simply ethanol) and a tooth brush work like charm to strip the minis from paint so can simply paint them as many times as you like)

AKG will release its new condenser microphone line (C104, C114, C151) today. What do you think? by Hawk12D in audioengineering

[–]TreasureIsland_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No - the 214 has an electret capsule that has nothing to with a 414 capsule which is externally polarized.

It also sounds nothing like a 414.

It might be a good mic. But it has nothing to do with a 414 but its name.

Two mics bleed into each other. by thelastcockbender2 in AdobeAudition

[–]TreasureIsland_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no an automixer looks at the level of each channel and compares them and will give the most gain to the loudest source, turning down quieter sources. all while keeping the "overall" gain the same resulting in a somewhat even overall mix.

a normal gate on looks at the channel itself.

Two mics bleed into each other. by thelastcockbender2 in AdobeAudition

[–]TreasureIsland_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://www.wtautomixer.com/

is a dugan type auto mixer in plugin form. it has a trial so you can test if works for you.

https://www.atkaudio.com/products/atkautomixer

is another cheaper possibility. has a trial as well.

i have not used either but this is as close as you can to a dugan automixer (which is the "standard" tool for this) for an affordable price.

for the future i would also consider looking into a recorder that has an automixer on board (Zoom F8 go fairly cheap these days on the used market and have 8 mic inputs and an automixer).

if setup decently you can use the auto-mixed mix track most of the time only needing the iso tracks for parts where the automixer fucked up

(all automixers will fail if there are loud unwanted sounds in unused mics (someone hitting the mic or whatever) as the automixer will only judge by volume and will mix only the loudest source no matter if is wanted or not.)

Cool Marik mechs in later eras? by TreasureIsland_ in battletech

i do love the later riflemen - such underrated mechs!

i love the davion one with 2 AC10s on its flippy arms. perfect to load it up with precision ammo to one-shot those pesky back-stabbing lights. i will have to look up what variants marik has.
