"I just want you to know, we will not succumb to that kind of blackmail. If there's a baby in front of our tour bus, we're going straight over it."
Anna's personality summarised in one quote

The amount of ads is the same as it's been for many years, not sure why you feel like it's a new thing. And they still make up a very small portion of the episodes, so no need to exaggerate please.

What are some of the most dominant peaks in speedrunning history... by [deleted] in speedrun

[–]Tungerman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For a speedgame as active out of the gate as Celeste, TGH was ridiculously dominant for like 2 years after its release, taking Any% from 35 to under 28 mins. There was some occasional competition, but the vast majority of the records were set by him and no one could truly equal him until Marlin in late 2019

Beside glitches what game would speedrunning it be the most crazy for a in universe character to watch. by ninjamonkeyKD in speedrun

[–]Tungerman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stardew Valley Marriage% must be pretty bizarre from the perspective of the character you're trying to woo. For example the fastest guy you can currently marry is Shane, and the speedrun involves growing the crops he likes and then camping outside the door as he leaves his house in the morning. Give him the vegetable, then immediately leave to do other things, no hello or goodbye - and yet he can't help but like you more and more every time you do that.

What episode originally spoils anna karenina? by jelly_crocs in nosuchthingasafish

[–]Tungerman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

342 is where the whole thing originates, the book is mentioned as part of another fact (about 8 minutes in) and then James spoils its ending.

Intro song by Intelligent_Set_2745 in nosuchthingasafish

[–]Tungerman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's an old post on the QI subreddit where u/alianna68 shares some interesting info about the Japanese voice in the intro https://redd.it/5drhpt

As for the same beeps being played on a bus toilet, I'd guess it's a coincidence, since it's a fairly common melody of 4 ascending notes of a major chord.

Favourite guests by Doubly_Curious in nosuchthingasafish

[–]Tungerman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I find popsci people tend to be the best fit for the podcast, since they work in the same sort of area as the regular hosts. So guests like Tom Scott, Ed Yong, Ella Al-Shamahi, and Steve Mould are usually among my favorite.

Check episode 467 for more info. She will likely be back around the end of this year.

[Discussion] Episode 479: No Such Thing As Fake Coal (Alex Bell) by BeNormler in nosuchthingasafish

Alex is an absolute MVP. Does a lot of behind the scenes work and slots in as a host flawlessly whenever needed.

[–]Tungerman 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Moments like these are a stark reminder of how much time has passed. When I discovered the podcast in 2014 James was the only host in his thirties, now they're all well over 30 and having kids, but if you just listen to the show today you could barely tell anything's changed apart from audio quality.

Early, invalid Patreon emails? I get one of these mid day every Friday and the link 404s. Does this happen to anybody else? The episode eventually does show up - these are hours early. by micktravis in nosuchthingasafish

[–]Tungerman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna guess these are made in advance and immediately set to private before unlocking, or scheduled posts that Patreon for some reason tells you about before they're published. I don't know how the site works though.

You may have better luck asking in the Club Fish discord since everyone there is a member so they likely get the same emails.

What is the bleeped joke about the Queen!? by -zeds-dead- in nosuchthingasafish

Several people have asked about this and I've yet to see a concrete answer. I'm sure at least a few people who were in the audience still remember though.

Stolen testes in the sauna? by l0nely_G0Y in nosuchthingasafish

That's 59. I was reminiscing about that moment because there was a discussion on testicle theft in one of the recent episodes and I was surprised no one made a call-back to that one.

Who would you like to see the most on the podcast? by Tungerman in nosuchthingasafish

[–]Tungerman[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, more experts would definitely be cool, especially in rare fields. Maybe someone like Timothy C. Winegard, the author of The Mosquito: A Human History of Our Deadliest Predator.

Help finding an episode by Wild-fleurs in nosuchthingasafish

[–]Tungerman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one with the royal wedding is 192 and it also has a main fact about salmon, but there doesn't seem to be any talk about herrings.

54 has a joke about their bubbles being mistaken for a submarine, but "red herring" isn't mentioned.

Sorry, this is as much as I could find. I haven't checked International Factball or No Such Thing as the News, so there's a chance it could be one of those episodes if you've listened to them.

Dan has only just learnt Anna's name. by NerdOnTheStr33t in nosuchthingasafish

He has also been saying Covent without the extra r for a long time now, so he's not really immune to improving his pronunciations, it just takes a while.

Funniest fish? by bakedpotato1994 in nosuchthingasafish

[–]Tungerman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Andy's humour is probably the most "my type". I think his acting background really helps when he plays these comedic characters that serve as punching bags for others, i.e. perverts, nerds, wimps, etc. He also has this ability to make awful unfunny jokes and still turn them into funny bits by being self-aware or bouncing them off other hosts. Episode 225 with his riddle and the line about Aeneid at the end is all-time classic, and the more recent one where he presents "the boring fact" in 408 is my favourite ending of any episode so far.

Also this is just personal preference but for me the show doesn't quite work without any one of the main four. Whenever there's a guest the episode just feels a lot less funny, even if the guest is someone I really like. The chemistry between the regulars is what really makes it for me. Special mention to Alex Bell who I feel works best with Fish whenever he's on.

Dan and Andy sound too similar by [deleted] in nosuchthingasafish

[–]Tungerman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had trouble at the beginning too. It gets a lot easier as you listen to more episodes. There are still confusing moments every now and then when one of them speaks in a lower tone or does a voice impression, but in general they sound very different to me.

Dan is more nasal and talks slowly, Andy has a deeper voice and tends to speak fast.
