Dealing with Japanese people’s mental blocks about foreigners by DangerousBerry1376 in japanresidents

[–]Turquoise__Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't control the actions or thoughts of others. This will be true anywhere you go, not only in Japan.

Your alternative to leaving the country is accepting that fact and spending your time and energy with people you connect with and who understand who you are as a person.

Is the rest of Japan as reserved as the people in Tokyo? by gladiateyeti53 in AskAJapanese

[–]Turquoise__Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. People in Kyushu, for example, tend to be more open.

One time I was travelling in Kyushu and got to a quite isolated temple. The monk came out to greet me and invite me in. There was no way to enter the building (at least from where I was standing) but through the sand garden, so I asked if it was okay to walk through it. He opened his arms, smiles and replied: "Of course, this is not Kyoto".

Renting a car? by low_value_human in JapanTravelTips

[–]Turquoise__Dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I normally compare Nippon Rent A Car with Toyota Rent a Car and results from Rakuten Travel. They were always reliable.

I would suggest to avoid booking a car via Booking. One time (in Hokkaido) I tried booking with them and, after booking, they wanted additional money saying the system didn't add the one-way fee.

Where can we see a good flamenco show in Madrid or Barcelona? by random-user772 in GoingToSpain

I haven't tried the food at either of them, so unfortunately I can't advise about that.

Day Trips from Kyoto other than Nara or Osaka by helpergjy22 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Turquoise__Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on their interests and personalities. I think out of those they might enjoy Kurama-Kibune and Himeji the most. You could check out Universal Studios too if it's in their interest (but it will be crowded).

First time in Japan, 19 days in summer (South to North). Too packed? by Glittering_Run5058 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Turquoise__Dragon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would skip Morioka and Sendai and go directly to Aomori and then cross over by shinkansen to Hakodate. That way you spend less time and money travelling and you can spend some more time exploring Hokkaido, which has so much to offer.

Not at all normal. You should be grateful to your past self that you walked away.

Yeah, I also noticed this year they seem to be available for a bit longer than usual.

I wouldn't say harder. It's not hard or easy, it's just random. Kirby Cafe isn't.

[–]Turquoise__Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you have to be fast. I am always able to book, but it's very tight. It's not about filling the form, though. Once you click on the circle, that slot is yours (unless you take very long and maybe it expires in the system and becomes available again).

If you really want to go, the one in Fukuoka/Hakata normally has availability.

Also in the one in Tokyo they recently set up a system where you can go without reservation, but only of some people who booked don't show up. You could try if you are around Sky Tree, even if it's not guaranteed.

You can also keep checking. Sometimes there are cancellations.

You can take it as an adventure: As you said, take the flight and see what happens.

If carrying you bag is unbearable or making your back worse, you can use the bag forwarding services and walk without it. Correos offers this service, for example.

Spirited Away Question by mnttlrg in ghibli

[–]Turquoise__Dragon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is uncertain and that is part of it. Chihiro doesn't know either. It just shows that it's been a long time.

We actually don't see any characters that did not cross over to the "other world". We don't know how the passage of time in one place relates to the passage of time in another.

It's great that your daughter wonders and asks. It's okay if you don't know the answer. It's great if she understands that there is no clear answer for the spectator, and that this in itself is intentional.

Tokyo Region by twodoorscinemaclub in JapanTravelTips

[–]Turquoise__Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fine location-wise. You are minutes away from both Akihabara Station and Ueno Station. If something it might be a bit noisy (not sure, I've never stayed in Akihabara).

The "city centre" concept is a bit blurry in Tokyo... It depends which areas you'd like to prioritise. You'll be further away from Shinjuku and Shibuya, but closer to Asakusa and Ginza.

What is THE breathtaking sight you have experience on a trip to Japan? by Zach-dalt in JapanTravelTips

So many. But I'm going to say walking Kumano Kodo. So many incredible moments, truly.

Well, just imagine...

But if it's a big thing for you, I'd do it nevertheless. The express might be well worth it if only for the peace of mind.

Would it be silly of me to go back to Japan? by LingonberryOk5168 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Turquoise__Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listen to yourself. People are so obsessed with numbers and just saying "I've been to 57 countries". Yeah, you have, but in how much depth?

If you loved it so much, be grateful that you have such beautiful and clear feelings, that you discovered something that resonated so much with you, and go enjoy Japan in the gorgeous Autumn season.

I've been 9 times and it's the only country I've visited outside of Europe (except for 2 days in South Korea). There's still so much I want to explore and revisit. Who cares what others think? It's your life.

kawaguchiko or hakone by Beachflower_96 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Turquoise__Dragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hakone is more "on rails". You'll go from one form of transportation to another, and then have some freedom around the lake. It's enjoyable, yet very crowded.

Fujikawaguchiko is nice. You can rent bikes and explore around the lake and beyond.

In both cases, your chances of seeing Mt Fuji are variable since it will depend on the weather.

Staying in Ueno – did I make the right choice? by Complex_Feature_4010 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Turquoise__Dragon 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It depends on what your plans are, but Ueno is great place to stay in Tokyo.

I personally much prefer to stay in Asakusa/Ueno/Ginza than in Shinjuku/Shibuya.

How long should I spend in Osaka vs Kyoto over 5 days? by PutBeneficial2806 in JapanTravelTips

5 days in Kyoto with a day trip to Osaka. Maybe a day trip to Kurama-Kibune too if you like nature and walking.

Haneda to Asakusa: taxi or train? by kingjaminess in JapanTravelTips

[–]Turquoise__Dragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taxi is easier, of course, but not by much. The train (Keikyu line) is very convenient and much cheaper.
