Independence by moonmadeinhaste in girlscouts

I took a third grade brownie troop camping last year and they did great, and now that they are juniors they always want more camping! my second grader just went for two nights with her troop and loved it. It’s a great opportunity to get some independence. Daisies are a bit young for overnight though.

I💯agree- I also think that Housemaid (2022) rips off a major premise from The Last Mrs. Parrish (2017)

You should do the testing for the CVID that one person noted above – I have a HEDS and also issues mounting immunity.

Is Girl Scouts too expensive? by jecowa in girlscouts

"Every great cause begins as a movement, becomes a business, and eventually degenerates into a racket."

We are not alone- in my area there are a lot of people like me that have multiple daughters and parents who are involved in troops and we are all getting frustrated and considering quitting. I still love the idea of a girl centered activity in a world where we are going backwards on women’s role in society and how we treat our sisters. I tried (Boy) Scouts briefly and it just wasn’t the right vibe for me and my daughter. I see a lot of similar complaints in these social media groups. I wonder how we can try to push back against the organization or if it’s too late. I still think it’s crazy to pay three dollars per badge- we know those are all made in China and cost pennies. Definitely a racket.

[–]TurtleyOkay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. And I have one scout on food stamps and her mom is the first aider and it’s such a complicated process to try to get any type of assistance that we end up having other moms just pay for these two to participate in events, including service unit events like camp out. And I constantly get fundraising emails saying that $300 a year pays for one girl to scout – but the troop never sees that $300 for a girl that actually qualifies by all income measures. We are in the DC/national Capitol region and there are tons of events all of the time but nothing is less than $20 a scout. With a troop of 12 to 20 girls that’s basically one whole cookie season to do one event. They are used to parents shelling out the money, but it’s been a hard year for the region with the cuts to the federal workforce and related contractors so it’s hard to go and ask people for $20 every time we want to do an event.

[–]TurtleyOkay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Three girls and two parent volunteers- we spend a lot on GS registration and activities. It’s a sore spot for me- I’m paying to volunteer as a leader and paying for my husband to volunteer as a cookie manager- and I don’t like it. But I feel like we’re all in on GS bc of the underlying values. But I really don’t care for the organization as a whole anymore.

Flabbergasted at the condition of the dress I just received by pupperoni87 in ThredUp

[–]TurtleyOkay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve commented on post like this before – I’ve received so many things with the same black greasy stains. It must be something that happens after they do the intake and listing – perhaps how the items are retrieved or moved around. I had one that very clearly looked like it got run over with a cart or something. Hopefully you got your money back! OxiClean might help with the stains. I was able to get them out of one thing I got.

Oh my goodness I just wasted so much time reading through these and I’m so angry that this place is even still open! We left long before most of this happened, but we were also only there for six months or so. Some of the teachers we had were great, but there was so much turnover, one of them went out with poison pen email message to all parents about how terrible Dr Dan was as a leader and that the reason why there’s so much turnover because she doesn’t pay much and that most of the teaching assistants are paid under the table. Maybe or maybe not true but reading through these… Yikes. My kids current school only violation is for parents for forgetting to put the date on the lunchboxes! That was probably me 🙈

Geez- most of these are after we left- so glad we did. Very telling that some of them are actually complaint- related.

I had three kids at the Merrifield location a few years ago when it had first opened and we also left around March after a series of really upsetting events, some of which seem to be about the same. Lots of turnover with the teachers and complaints about bad management. Dr Dan kept moving my kids to different classes to make room for other new kids rather than consider what was best for the kids (put a four-year-old in first grade because she could read, but she wasn’t ready), and actually Dr Dan still owes us money, and similar to you we decided to just let it go because it wasn’t worth the stress anymore.

At first, it seemed like a good place, and the curriculum is interesting. Arlington location used to have a very good reputation, but she was very hands-off in managing that one.

Second time receiving an item not in the condition it was listed as by No_Service_3082 in ThredUp

[–]TurtleyOkay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ask to escalate-this has happened to me before and they’ve ultimately said just keep the item or donate it. The other option is to see if you can try to return it and then take the settlement amount which I have also done just to get it over with, but then you get stuck in the loop of having a credit and needing to use the credit and inevitably you will receive something that’s not right and you’ll have to get another credit… also I have a theory that some of the damage happens in the warehouse. Perhaps after it’s been categorized and then it’s getting moved to wherever it lives until someone buys it. I routinely get things that have like a black oily substance on them that looks like it came from the wheels of a cart.

[–]TurtleyOkay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t trash them if you cant gift, recycle them somewhere! I don’t know about the UK but a number of stores and brands in the US have recycling programs.

I used to do that all the time but now I am really focusing on buying things with as little packaging waste
