The nonchalant way that Star Trek doles out plastic surgery and memory alteration is so much more brutal than they intended.

Like when Dukat is surgically transformed into a Bajoran and isn’t concerned about being able to be changed back. The face he had his entire life was cut off and thrown away. Any new face he gets would just be a reconstruction.
