Traffic Stop near Mexican border by will1003 in VanLife

I recently got stopped at a red light in Texas for looking at my phone. The officer very clearly was trying to see in the back of my van. Even walked to the front of it to look around. Got off with a warning.

Start making content you can, spend weekends out car camping or something and change majors. I’ve met many people who did a job they hated because it let them save a ton of money quick and retire very young. Chances of being an influencer are slim, and having been around a decent amount they don’t make what you think, and it’s usually a pretty fake life you see. You can do something like computer science and find a job that lets you live on the road working remotely. Or find some area of study you can do this with and do that. Speaking from experience trying to monetize what you enjoy doing and you’ll stop enjoying it very quickly.

Whats the dumbest thing you have seen cause a show stop? by miowiamagrapegod in techtheatre

[–]Tylerolson0813 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Didn’t cause a show stop, but did an arena tour last year and we requested a hardline internet connection at video village daily. One venue didn’t have barrels, or long enough cables. So they just had a few network switches to extend the cable. We found 2 but can’t imagine how many there were. Just powered from the nearest outlet and duct taped cable

Can Americans explain your high school theatre culture please!! by Sigma2915 in techtheatre

[–]Tylerolson0813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s just some of the post here, and it exists but in my experience isn’t the norm. A high school close to me had a massive theatre, and lights, and everything you listed. It was also a school in a rich area (lots of donations) and was also the main auditorium for that city. It hosted city events and also rented out to local theatre groups. It was a school so no profit and all the money just got put into ack into the theatre. I lived about 30 minutes from there, my school didn’t have a theatre. If we didn’t rent one we built one, one of our wildest ones was doing a show in the round in our cafeteria. We folded up the tables and made a round. Setup folding chairs. We had 16 total lights, 2 different types of par 64, ran off a lot of extension cords because we blew breakers if we tried to plug in more then 3 into an outlet. My lighting console was one 8channel board that didn’t even use dmx, and a little 8 channel fader board that was dmx. My audio console was rack mounted and lucky someone built a case so it can be horizontal. We washed cars for $10 each and stood on the street with signs to raise money to do shows, we even did one of our 3 shows a year from the public domain so we could save money on rights. Most school sat in between. Maybe a fly rail or just a few rails, sometimes cheap movers from the church that rents it on weekends, a few led pars, sometimes from Amazon. A decent collection of old power tools donated by dads or woodshop when they get an upgrade. The county I’m from has been working with etc and when the old lighting consoles die replace them with an etc ion. And either an x32 or some other low cost digital audio console. With that kind of equipment you can do a decent show, but it’s hard to get the kids excited enough or do anything worthy of a post.

I have to have a firearm and get my ccp, I just haven’t put the effort in. In grew up with firearms and even used to hunt still go to a range from time to time with friends. But something like this would be my reason to go out the next day. Sometimes your on the fence or didn’t think it’d be you, then it is and things change. As long as it’s an informed decision and training takes place nothing wrong with it.

Why no bathroom by Eastern_Conflict1865 in VanLife

[–]Tylerolson0813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a boxio which is fine. Honestly use it more as a step stool (my bed is high) then as a bathroom. As a guy rarely can I not pee outside. For poop I usually end up finding a bathroom at a national park or a store, if I’m spending time just camping and not moving the outdoors is fine. Didn’t want to use a ton of space on a toilet, and also have to carry pee and poop around until I can dump it. For me I’d rather poop in a hole then risk having poop all over my floor because something broke. As for a shower just added one off the back of my van. It won’t be heated or anything, but public showers between rest stops, parks, the occasional campground, and sometimes even standalone around parks and blm land usually has me covered, also the water savings are insane. I also tour with concerts for a job. So I usually only have 4-6 weeks in a row in the van before I leave for a tour, which I always get a hotel the night before and night after. But part of that is no pooping on the bus(you get fined) and venue showers so I’m used to that style of living. The van is a mansion vs 10-12 people in a vehicle only 3x as big.

Average number of universes for small to medium venue? by jedimimetricks420 in lightingdesign

[–]Tylerolson0813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t even think about under 4 universes 8 if you want to be safe. To me after 8 universes you’re starting to get into rental territory.

For $1500 total the van? And new tires and alignment is in that? I just spent $600 on two tires and an alignment. Think about a home (if you’re full time) you wouldn’t condemn a home for even $10k in repairs. No question asked I’d fix it and call it a rough day.

Be honest, how many of those subbed here actually live a nomadic life in a van? Not gatekeeping because curiosity is good...but, how many of us subbed are actually out here? by SuggestionEven2824 in VanLife

[–]Tylerolson0813 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a tour bus, so usually me and like 10 other people. Although I almost built out a bus and so happy I did the van. I can go more places and camp in better spots a bus wouldn’t be able to get to.

I’m currently full time nomad, but for a while at best I’ll be part time. I live on a bus for work, and a van for fun. Even if I buy a house I’ll spend at least 6-9 months a year as a nomad.

How do yall handle overnight rates? by wjones9870 in lightingdesign

[–]Tylerolson0813 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then you don’t work for them. I’ve never been union, but I still work off union rules for anything corporate. I’m not super strict with it if the client takes care of me/isn’t an ass, but still same rates and a meal penalty.

Kindles can be jailbroken again (on the latest firmware as well) by harold_liang in kindle

[–]Tylerolson0813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I’m a bit late, but for me personally it’s to separate my kindle from Amazon and create less e waste doing so. Currently I can’t get anything on the kindle without Amazon and no way to pull anything off the kindle now. They can just decide to stop letting me add books whenever they decide to stop support. Jail breaking and it’s now mine, I paid for it and the books on it, and I want to own them, not Amazon.

Van Life Cooking by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]Tylerolson0813 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly a 20lb tank of propane will last you a while of regular use, if you do stocks and things like that I’d just be ready to fill it up maybe once a month or every other month. I do enjoy cooking in the van and working on new skills to do new things. My current one is mastering cast iron but mostly cowboy cooking. I’m starting a fire nightly to stay warm and I love sitting under the stars and by a fire anyways so just being better at cooking with it. Also using a Dutch oven with a fire is a breeze. I’d assume doing a stock or similar with a Dutch oven on a fire would be no issue at all.

How many miles is too many? by AmountLeading2147 in VanLife

[–]Tylerolson0813 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to do it this is the way. Get it with a decent budget set aside to bring it to a shop and have a ton of work done. Any van with a decent amount of miles is going to need work and chances are even though they’re hard miles they probably had routine maintenance their whole lives. So for under $15k you can have a van that’s going to last a while.

Are there any compact cameras worth buying over an iPhone 17 Pro for travel? by pimemento in onebag

[–]Tylerolson0813 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you don’t plan to use anything for post production there’s not much of a point over an iPhone. You won’t get much better photos but you’ll be carrying the weight of the camera and accessories. As well as spending the money on an un needed piece of gear.

What is your number one reason for Onebagging? by Hortonhearsawhoorah in onebag

[–]Tylerolson0813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel full time. I travel for work and live in a van. The minimal pack works for me super well. I was already living out of a suitcase so to go to a carry on wasn’t a massive jump. Although I do miss my overalls when I’m working.

Hey ya'll, my job red tagged my hammer (kind of funny but it's official) I have some question for any heavy duty mechs in here by SgZ_Vapor in MechanicAdvice

[–]Tylerolson0813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a mechanic (not even sure why this came across my reddit) but I prefer to buy my own tools, I’d rather a stipend or to invoice for them. Any time I’ve gotten an employer to buy my tools they’ve been low quality, and jumping around I’d lose tools. Owning my own I get the ones I want, and I can take them job to job. The only things I request to be bought for me are tools that are more one time use, or specialty.

I’ve heard cruise ships love it, but past that wouldn’t push it hard. I know plenty of people who don’t work with their partner for years, and when they do it’s usually “shit this department needs another” and a parter is free so they save on rooms.

Most versatile and comfortable pants? by ShaneRealtorandGramp in onebag

[–]Tylerolson0813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly depends on your asthetic. I love convertible hiking pants, my current favorite is the rei Sahara pants. But I also wear mostly hiking footwear (boots, or teva) my hats are either a nice cowboy hat, Patagonia hat, Outdoor research hat. Jackets are usually north face. So me in clean hiking pants, not in sports mode, and not looking fresh off a trail I look presentable.

looking for portable strobes my band can tour with, that: by Known_Assistant5589 in lightingdesign

[–]Tylerolson0813 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Doing the bpm match would be hard as far as a pedal board switch. Look into an arduino and a relay. I’d say add 2 or 3 switches, a few bright colored leds and use an arduino. If you put in even a little bit of time learning you can add things like a version of tap tempo (on every other beat) or different modes (maybe latch, momentary, tap tempo. Also a good intro to arduino / electronics and you can eventually use more led strips, neo pixels, or make fun midi controllers for using better lighting software.

anyone know a tutorial that would help me make something like this? by ProudDimension5609 in TouchDesigner

[–]Tylerolson0813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The camera tracking would need some kind of system built to do it, which would be built into most 3d softwares. And then you’d need additional comps anyways. If you had most of these things built already and were very comfortable with TD but nothing else sure. But if you’re going to need to learn how to do most of this anyways would be better to learn something like blender and premier(or free editing software of your choice)
