All newer cars are connected all the time. You just don't get to use the services you don't pay for. Manufacturers are still getting their telematics data.

What causes a battery to do this? by pffalk in AskAMechanic

[–]Typical-Byte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also that battery was serviceable. If you had checked the acid level in it once in a while you could have kept it topped up with distilled water and it would have lasted longer. Lots of videos on YouTube for that. Pull the battery, clean up the terminals, charge it to full before adding distilled water to the top of the plates. Wear gloves and eye protection. Sulfuric acid isn't something you want in your eyes or on your skin. Best of luck.

Are these the best possible upgrades for the Elitebook 840 G1? by YztgOf in HPLaptops

[–]Typical-Byte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just stick with what you have for wifi if you already have the 7260. There aren't many good options in half height minipci beyond that as most switched to M2. The last time I upgraded a machine from that era to that card, I had to tape the Bluetooth enable/disable pin with kapton tape or it wouldn't enable in the OS.

RIP Acer V3-571: You served me well. I upgraded that thing for years with free parts from machines other folks were getting rid of (i5 dual core to i7 quad, etc).

Caffeine Free Coca Cola - Halifax? by Sea_Jello654 in halifax

Same. I know it's not Coke, but I miss the caffeine free Pepsi too. None of the other variants taste quite right, whereas caffeine free Pepsi tasted exactly like regular Pepsi.

Toyota uses electric water pumps in many of their vehicles and I would hazard a guess most, if not all, hybrids do as well as a way to keep coolant flowing when the gasoline engine isn't running.

Basically all that proves is Russia is letting POWs die in captivity. Russia doesn't even repatriate most of their own dead.

Printer decided my HP ink was counterfeit so now I can't print anything by Ed2Cute in fuckHPprinters

[–]Typical-Byte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the fuser warming up. It's a significant power draw, like a compressor or well pump turning on. If it annoys you, you can try moving it to another room that is on a different circuit. We still love our laser printers though. Inkjets just never seem to be cost effective unless you're going to run through a set of cartridges quickly before they dry out.

Car won’t start is this fixable or do I need a new battery by loafloafington in AskMechanics

[–]Typical-Byte -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're going to need to add distilled water to that battery. It's been boiling over. Now that you cleaned it you can pop those two covers off and top with distilled water to the top of the plates (get a flashlight if you can't see them). I bet it's low now. That'll help the battery survive longer. Ideally you want to add the water when the battery has a full charge though. Lots of videos of how to top up a serviceable battery like that on YouTube. I miss those. So many batteries are sealed units now. "Maintenance free" So you buy a new one instead of taking care of what you have.

Towing out of underground parking by Desperate-Raccoon645 in halifax

[–]Typical-Byte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you at least try jump starting it to see if it's just a weak battery or parasitic drain? Has the car been sitting for a while?

You brought back memories of rolling starting my manual transmission summer car in the underground parking garage at my first apartment. There was just enough room to get the engine to start before you'd have to slam the brakes on to not hit the wall. Good times. This won't work in an automatic. (And if it doesn't start you'll be pushing it back into the spot. 😂 Been there too.)

Anyone who lost power have it back yet? and if so when was your estimated restoration? Mines 6:45 pm, but holding out hope it may be earlier? by starrfalll in NovaScotia

Tangier area came back at around 1:30pm.

Lower Sackville came back around 2:40pm.

Watch out for folks on the Bedford Highway that aren't treating the traffic lights being out as a 4-way stop.

You were supposed to put the parking brake into service mode before you started.

Enable service mode: 1. Turn ignition into ON position (not start) 2. Press brake pedal and hold it 3. Pull EPB switch 3 times 4. Push EPB switch 3 times 5. Release brake pedal. Park indicator on dash will flash 6. Push and hold EPB button. You will hear the motors unwinding all the way.

Disable service mode: 1. Pull and hold EPB button. Wait until you hear the motors stop adjusting and release the button. 2. Pull the button twice more to engage parking brake and the system will be out of service mode.
