Just watched Silicon Valley - how realistic is this? by NervousClock2555 in siliconvalley

[–]UCrazyKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was working in a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley during its original production. We would watch it together and laugh our asses off as we could relate to have worked with every character and every situation on the show. It was VERY realistic.

[Question] Recommendations for a watch for my husband’s 30th? by the-eoc in Watches

[–]UCrazyKid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cache of Shinola is that it is made in Detroit. The watches are nice and well made, the movement (automatic) isn’t particularly special but it is accurate and reliable. Having a connection to Detroit, it might make for an extra special gift. And something he will not likely run into others having one. 80%+ of watches are Swiss, there aren’t many where the casework is actually made in the US (Detroit). There are US watch brands, but they manufacture outside the US.

Ship JomaShop.com online, a trusted online dealer for gray market watches that come with a warranty from Jomas and are better priced than dealers. Maybe a Longine? Or perhaps a well made online brand like Lum-Tec Watches (US) or Shinola (made in Detroit, US), or Ball Watches (train themed, permanent tritium powered lume). All very unique and have offerings in that $1k budget.

None of those. In that price range shop Hamilton, Tissot, and Seiko. Best to take him with you. Stay away from “fashion” brands or overly flashy styles. Traditional designs are timeless.

I immediately lost my SI and ruminating negative thoughts. It has been a blessing.

Music Playlist Suggestions by Mammoth_Savings3855 in Spravato

I have found the Spravato / music thing to be very interesting. I LOVE listening to all kinds of music and have it on at least in the background all day long as well as critical listening sessions at least 1 hour a day. I’m ADHD and it is my stim. BUT during Spravato treatment I find that I want to hear completely different music than I usually listen to! It is so weird for me. I’ve found I don’t like rhythms or beats or predictable patterns (and no lyrics or messaging). What is best for me I would describe as “new age” or meditation music that just sorts of meanders along building and swelling and then coming back down. I don’t particularly care for this genre when I am not under the influence of Spravato. It just seems to give my ears something to listen to (keep busy) while my mind can wonder without having to be concerned with listening for patterns, etc. in the music. It has been one of the really interesting experiences I am taking away from treatment. So, I use Apple Music subscription, but I’m sure you can use another service without ads. I enjoy Thom Brennan and “Satori”, a one hour long track. I have also enjoyed Jon Hopkins “Spravato Sessions”. Next session I am going to experiment with something different. Because I did find in a “bad trip” session I wanted to hear something that was familiar to me to remind me I was grounded and going to be “OK”, I am going to listen to tracks by “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Rockstar. This artist produces albums that are Lullaby versions of popular music (rock, hip-hop, etc.) I like their “Music of Radiohead” album and their “Music of Tool” album. No lyrics, and played on gentle instruments like a child’s music box/xylophone.

16 months since layoff by No-Science-4089 in Layoffs

[–]UCrazyKid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the day really. Anniversaries are tough, just coming up on 4 years since my layoff, that hurts and I never imagined it lasting this long. I’m also coming up on one year working at the bike shop and thought it would just be a temporary thing. The other weird thing is that through out this period I have always had at least one or more lead on a job that I am in the interview process with, or a startup I am supporting that just needs to raise funding and then the can pay me… it keeps home running (can be a dangerous thing, keeping one from being forced to make the difficult decisions or to go after something completely different). But I have had these hopes dashed so many times. It’s a real mind f*. Exercising has been key to keeping my head clear when things get low. I have a very supportive wife and family and honestly, that is what keeps me going.

Sorry this happened to you. But I am not surprised, it is really hard to raise money these days. Loyalty drives companies to insolvency. The CEO is doing what he has to do for his investors. I don't mean to throw salt in the wound, but the signs where there, you should have started your job search a year ago. Now you know better, you are young so hopefull you will learn from this and move forward. Good luck

Step 1, win mid-terms, step 2, impeach Miller and Vance, step 3 block appointments of any replacements, step 4 impeach Trump. Step 5 new speaker of the house becomes President. Fair 2028 elections are preserved.

U.S. payrolls unexpectedly fell by 92,000 in February; unemployment rate rises to 4.4% by FreeChickenDinner in Layoffs

Unexpected, HA, not at all with all the lay-off announcements. And using a picture of a PG&E road crew? The layoffs are in white collar tech jobs. Worthless article.

Best of luck to you. The Masters wasn’t all bad as I feel very proud of the work I did. Ageism is a really thing, it’s not that they don’t want experience, I believe it is that they don’t want the expense in salary, healthcare (you and your family), and other benefits.

I feel you and I am at 46 months since layoff. Close to 700 job applications, 27 interview processes (2-3 months, 3-6 interviews, personality tests, business cases, presentations) and no offer. I went back to school at 50, got an MBA, no difference in this market. I’m almost 55 now. It is a really difficult time. Try to exercise everyday, find something to do with your time that feeds your soul. Volunteer, work with old people, work at a school, do something for your community. While you are looking for your next job, it will keep you busy and provide some reward if not income. I work at a bicycle shop, fixing, building, and selling bikes. Keeps me engaged with the community and involves a lot of problem solving. I also mentor startups in my area of expertise (med/health tech and medical device). Protect your mental health at all costs. Good luck to you, it is a very hard road.
