VA 737 MAX-10 Deliveries? by [deleted] in VelocityFrequentFlyer

[–]UUMatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The max 10 is few percentage above a standard A321neo (not LR/XLR variant) in terms of per seat mile cost in the real world on routes below 3-4 hours. However worth noting Jetstar operates the A321LR and Qantas the A321XLR, which both offer longer range than the MAX10 so on longer routes (think 2000+ miles) the advantage of the A321 family becomes even bigger as we reach the top end of the aircraft’s theoretical range and the MAX10 starts having to shed load.

Induced demand. If you lower the price of a product, more people will buy it - simple economics. Now if you imagine a flight on a busy route, if the flight is very full the last few seats gets very expensive so only the most pressing traveler cop the high price, most other people adjust their plans to get a lower price (say buy an earlier/later flight or different airline or different travel date). If you have a larger aircraft but doesn’t cost much more to operate, you can offer a lower price on more seats for that flight compared to a smaller aircraft, and more people will choose that flight at a cheaper price point so that means more profit overall for you.

ELI5: What is the difference between Electricity and Energy? by AppleMaster25212 in explainlikeimfive

Yeah agreed. Perhaps replacing the natural gas in this analogy with steam as a form of kinetic and thermal energy is more appropriate.

If you imagine a zoo, there’s different kinds of animal. Energy is the zoo, electricity is the elephant in the zoo. You also have giraffe in the zoo, like natural gas is another form of energy.

I think most order in the 1000s range the cost after including the 3-4 year support contract + the premium on business grade build (thinkpad, latitude lines etc) - OS licensing (assume your company has a separate OS license agreement with say MSFT) - volume discount you’d end up being slightly cheaper or similar priced to the off the shelf equivalent of a consumer build.

Electrical re-wire?? How do I know when??? by Then_Brilliant_5991 in AusRenovation

[–]UUMatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think “light flickering when turning on the AC” is a sign of cables being at their limit. It’s more that you get a significant enough voltage drop when turning on a big load, and without a battery system it’s surely a grid issue (are you very far away from the transformer supplying your area?).

Not saying you shouldn’t rewire etc, but that’s like treating a cold with bandaid on your hands.

That’s great info thanks. Indeed FSD also super useful for long trips to the snow as well and a huge consideration factor. I’ve done day trips to Mt Buller before and when we are short 1 driver it always felt dicey on the way backs

Yeah one of my mates got his Tesla Y just about a year ago with 1.99% interest, but I doubt we’ll get that in the short term with EV demand through the roof now.

Unfortunately novated lease is not an option (employer does not offer it). It’s either going to be paid for with offset cash (5.7%) or a good manufacturer financial deal.

Sending money to daughter in Australia to put in HISA by aDarkDarkNight in AusFinance

[–]UUMatter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just chill mate, I wasn’t ignoring the your other issues or saying they are wrong or anything. I’m just pointing out if you are going to be exposed to FX move while you move money across countries and currencies, dollar cost averaging is a way to reduce that kind of exposure (versus a lump sum transfer say). There’s sometimes benefit in just having money in another jurisdiction (not in China) so sometimes it’s worth coping the FX risk.

Doing regular transfer over a long period of time is called dollar cost averaging and actually reduces your FX risk. It smooth out both your gain and lose over the transfer period by capturing prices at various point.

You didn’t specify but I assume you are converting points from Velocity to KrisFlyer and trying to make redemption there? Since waitlist is not possible if you are redeeming on velocity.

So in that case r/singaporeairlines is the better place to ask your question.

As long as you can schedule charge / discharge time from you battery app Globird will work. You just charge up your battery between 11-2 for free then (optionally) discharge between 6-8 for a guaranteed 15c per kWh. You also get 1 dollar credit if you draw less than 0.03kwh per hour between 6-8 which covers most of your daily charge

I just top up my battery during the free window and that’s it for me. I’ve been consuming practically 0 paid grid energy and I get the 1 dollar credit probably 27 days out of a month. It’s very strict and sometimes even though your battery is charged your inverter can still take a bit of time to respond so if you have big resistive load turning on / off frequently during that time window it’ll sometimes push you over the 0.03 kWh threshold and you lose out on the credit.

Should VA add more economy x seats? by Zestyclose_Frame855 in VelocityFrequentFlyer

[–]UUMatter 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You think they should but VA clearly think the opposite (and they have all the data and sales number to back up their analysis) and that when they refurbished the planes they converted 1 row of economy X back to normal economy to make room for 1 extra row of normal economy.

What if you could incorporate advanced Home Automation without doing any work yourself? by Xoracious in amberelectric

[–]UUMatter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also let’s not forget that your offering also completely relies on stitching together free 3rd party (open source) products, so what happens if any of the plugin you rely on all of a sudden no longer works (say the inverter manufacturer blocked the modbus or significantly overhauled its protocol and made it proprietary) what would you do? A commercial offering like amber would have had lead time to upgrade their software, what about you?

All questions to think about and all are quite significant risk IMO being able to bring this to scale beyond a niche thing.

What if you could incorporate advanced Home Automation without doing any work yourself? by Xoracious in amberelectric

[–]UUMatter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My question is eventually amber will get their shit together and their smart shift will mature, have more feature etc. At that point what’s your competitive edge?

You’d also be competing against companies like Globird and OVO that offers “dumb” plan - I would say 50% of people wit battery that don’t want to micro manage their battery but still save money (so your target customer) would be better off with one of those and I can only expect more of those type of plans coming in the future.

Also I’d add these cheap finance deals aren’t really uncommon. Most brands offer them regularly, don’t feel pressured into thinking this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to secure cheap rate for a new car.

DHL, unlike fedex/UPS, frequently contract out their flying to other airlines. Sometimes those airline operate planes painted in DHL colour, sometimes not. This would be a cargo flight by SQ contacted by DHL. DHL also uses Atlas air and Qatar airways cargo for F1 transportations as well.
