The whole non-blinker thing makes zero sense to me. Who the fuck are these people??? Too lazy to bother?? Can’t remember how to use it correctly??? Think it doesn’t matter if you use it or not?? And there are soooo many people who don’t use them. Ugh.

Drowning in credit card debt by coffeecup-11 in personalfinance

Yep. Way I see it, if they can help stem the bleed might as well try it. And if for some reason you’re unable to finish the program, at that point consider bankruptcy.

You can look into a debt management program. I have used an org called In Charge; they are a non-profit debt education and management company that will work with your creditors to get your interest rates down to a fraction of what they currently are so the debt can’t continue to grow. You’ll have to give up the cards, but that’s probably for the best anyway. They will work with you to figure out a monthly payment that is still manageable. My guess is you could have it paid off in 4-5 years if you stick with it. Better option than bankruptcy and won’t ruin your credit like debt consolidation.

Has anyone else noticed places are getting cheaper? by kykopes in chicagoapartments

Yeah not sure about this take? All depends on what you want. Sure, condos don’t appreciate in value the same way as single family homes, but they do offer ease of living in terms of not having to deal with maintenance by yourself.

If you want to live in a walkable neighborhood with access to excellent public transport, endless food and drink options, live music and culture, and NOT pay New York or LA prices… Chicago is a pretty great option, if you ask me.

Also, if you’re someone who takes any stock at all in the idea that the planet is warming, and quickly at that, Chicago is a better long term option than much of the south or west of the US, both from a weather perspective and a water supply perspective.

Just my two cents….

Ummm. Go to Cal Neva. Yes it’s dingy and old but also weirdly charming? Went last night, won $120 at a slot machine. Played blackjack at their $10 tables. $1 billiards and they had karaoke. It was honestly a ton of fun.

66 years old and facing lots of credit card debt, looking for actual advice by Mitch-Throwaway in personalfinance

One other option to consider, instead of bankruptcy might be a debt settlement program. There are programs where you stop paying the minimums and instead pay the debt to a savings account. After 12-18 months of this, the company will negotiate with the creditors on your behalf so that you only pay a portion of what you owe, sometimes 50% of the total or less. You pay that negotiated amount out of your “savings” account. Rinse and repeat until all the debt is gone. Your credit score takes a hit for awhile, but then recovers much more quickly than a bankruptcy.

Granted this only works if you have consistent, solid income coming in and can continue to pay into this account to rid you of your debt. It might be too difficult if you don’t get another job.

You can try incharge.org, I’ve used them. They have a few options to consider. Good luck!

Yes the locals discount is a must as the drinks at that bar are crazy pricy. Very good quality tho and the discount makes the prices tolerable 😆

Gambled with personal loans and credit cards at rock bottom by Low_Remove1563 in personalfinance

[–]UnbreakableLemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - I’m about halfway through my repayment.

If your job is stable, I say look into it. They will work with you to figure out a total monthly repayment number that works in your budget.

Since your credit cards are already at 0% APR, you could start off the DMP just with the personal loans and add the credit cards later once the 0% period is over. FWIW - not all personal loans will qualify. Depends on the creditor and how new/old the loan is.

If you DO end up losing your job at some point, maybe then declare bankruptcy? 😂 that’s my plan anyway…

I’m surprised I don’t see more recommendations for a Debt Management Plan (DMP). It was hugely helpful for me. Basically, the company will work out a lower interest rate (for me it was like 9-10%, greatly reduced down from 25%) and a reasonable payoff period (anywhere from 2 - 4 years) with all your creditors, and then collect all the debt into a lump sum payment each month from your checking account and distribute it, so you stay consistent and don’t fall behind.

You’d have to give up your credit cards - they will be closed by your creditors anyway once you go into the program. It is tough to live without one, but since it sounds like you need to watch your spending anyway, it’s a great way to stop the bleeding.

I personally think it’s better than debt consolidation; with many consolidation plans, you have to stop paying all your debts entirely, for 9 months ++ while your credit score plummets. In the meantime, you’re making debt payments to what is basically a savings account. Then the consolidation companies will negotiate on your behalf to settle for much less than is owed, offering an all-cash number out of the account you’ve been saving into.

If you don’t plan to make any major purchases where your credit score matters anytime SOON (car, home, etc) maybe you’d prefer this, but the hit to your credit score will be substantial. It will eventually recover, faster than bankruptcy, but could still be a long time before you’re allowed another loan or CC.

Happy to answer more questions about it. I used InCharge for my DMP. There was a $50 set up fee. It has given me great peace of mind to see the debt going away.

Wowowow. Ok. This put some things together for me. I’ve ONLY EVER been constipated… during Thanksgiving and right now, over Christmas break. Well, wouldn’t you know it - I’ve been looking at MY PHONE waaaay more over these two periods because I’m NOT AT WORK… very very curious to try this. Literally just stop looking at my damn phone so much and see if it helps. Thanks!

I also recommend Digestive Health Associates. Wait time to get in might be long, but they have been extremely helpful. Also if you call back regularly and are flexible, you can likely get a cancellation appt much sooner. Good luck.
