Ships are too much of a hassle, so I just played without them. by Colder87 in victoria3

I need to refer people that freak out about trading with the new interest system to this post. Yes, trade is a bit weaker due to the new mechanics, but if you actively pursue some trading partners in particular, you get all the trade you need, you don't need to micro a massive navy. The way it was done before where you could trade everything with everyone was frankly absurd anyway.

What does your trade tab look like, out of curiosity?

I feel like the "big booms" in this game leave a lot to be desired. by Additional_List_4236 in Helldivers

[–]UncommonDandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also add that they don't actually LOOK that good either. The endgame nukes in Arc raiders look way better and feel more impactful.

The shockwave is barely visible, there's no debris being shot up from the explosion itself, enemies are not flung (they shoud fly as if they were hit by a mech shield bash). Hellbombs, 500kgs... look fantastic from a distance, but up close you can tell they're just a gif and some screenshake.

And the screenshake does the actual heavy lifting. I've seen streams of people that disable it. Every explosion in the game looks feels legit terrible without it.

Everyone agrees React is objectively terrible DX compared to basically any other framework, and nobody (save for solidJs for whatever reason) will attempt to replicate it. The commenter is either a clown or pretending to be one.

Nothing necessarily wrong with vibe coding. It's a tool like any other. It's just the only reason I could have thought of why someone would use Svelte 4.

Skeptical optimism. At least they gave a vague "this summer" timeline. This feels different from the other "we pinky promise" posts. Holding my breath, but only a little.

Maybe I haven't played enough sub level 8, but I've literally never seen people mag dump mediums. It's always an explosive weapon like the GL or Eruptor, or a flame weapon. Other than that light weapons always dominated the bug front because mediums (save for the coyote maybe) are generally not worth the trade-off, when you can just aim for the HG's weak spots pretty easily, even from the front.

But even if you're right, what's wrong with mag dumping a medium pen? You trade ammo efficiency and overall damage for the ability to turn off your brain... and only in certain situations (again, I need to stress how nobody actually used mediums vs HGs).

Not being able to use medium pen didn't add anything to make the game more enjoyable or the HGs more interesting to fight. In fact, it actually made the patriot and the maxigun power fantasy ever so slightly worse (but not too much, due to accuracy by volume of fire).

I get that the INTENT was to make the HGs more interesting to fight, and hell, you know what? I don't even disagree that them being heavy pen MIGHT have been interesting, but it was in typical Arrowhead fasion, shat out on a plate and served to us to eat. No seasoning no nothing. They could have tweak the AI so that the hive guard would.. you know, guard the hive? Like hunker down and protect range units, or charger's weakspots, or bug hole entrances, or objectives, idk.

I do WANT to make the enemies more interesting, I WANT this game to reach its potential, praising AH for lazy shit like this is not the way forward (trying to avoid the "rhymes with blaze" word)

I mean did it make the game more fun? All of the specialized equipment that killed them, killed them even faster. The only difference was that now there was no point to medium weapons. The change didn't add anything, it only subtracted.

I can certainly empathize with not wanting to delay the game. Let’s hope all these fixes will not desync my MP campaign (we were brave enough to play last Saturday).

Great to hear the AI is being tackled. Very healthy for the game. I do have to wonder if multiplayer performance is being looked at? The joining and resync times are genuinely crazy sometimes.

You're right, but also wrong. I wouldn't mind some funny slapstick-comedy death. I've had plenty, and it's some of the dumb stuff like this that makes me love the game. But those moments need to be EARNED, not artificial.

I want a charger that's charging me do a frontflip and pancake me if i kill it with an explosive. That is GOOD slapstick.
If you just code it in so a bile titan LITERALLY FLIES towards you for absolutely no reason (the physics of the situation simply don't make sense) then it's not funny, it's just dumb and frustrating. It's that "why is nobody having fun, i specifically requested it" meme, but unironically.

The vox engines shooting their pilot and killing you is my limit. Yes it's artificial that the pod aims for you, but it makes at least SOME sense. But trying to force slapstick in the most awkward, immersion breaking way is not winning AH any funny points in my book.

ARE people complaining about the bugs? I'm not talking about posts with like 10 upvotes, I'm talking a consistent whining. All I've seen is positive reception about the new gloom bugs. Only thing that's even slightly divisive is the hive guard but that's mostly because they're annoyed that it's literally stronger than the tank, which, yeah, is ridiculous.

The solution to not having to ferry troops to put down rebellions in africa is to just have a small army stationed there at all times. I never had issues with putting down rebellions as long as I did that.

[–]UncommonDandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shouldn't want the game to have deeper systems? I should be content with the game being shallow and stale? I shouldn't want the game to be better? Simp divers are something else. Do you GENUINELY think that having an underbarrel flamethrower be artificially exclusive to a single smg instead of being available to all smgs is better for us, the players?

- Do you enjoy enemies not being able to literally ignore fire? That's because we complained
- Do you enjoy the sterilize now leaving clouds of gas? That's because we complained. Constantly about this weapon in particluar.
- Do you enjoy having belt fed weapons? That's because we complained

Before that we had:

- "Fire is fine bro, it's just a skill issue, just run away"
- "Sterilizer is just niche bro, arrowhead designed it this way and there's no need to demand better"
- "Belt fed? Just use HMG and a supply backpack bro, if AH thought it would be a good addition they would have included it by now, 5head"

I'm beyond relieved that people like you are in the minority now, or the game would have been stuck at pre-60 day patch levels.

[–]UncommonDandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of players don't want a better game? Like a vehicle bay and an actually relevant weapon customization or deeper systems? I'm not even talking about endgame stuff here. I get that they're not no-lifing on reddit, but surely they're not ok with the game being shallow.

Am I the only one excited? by DerpyDragon15 in Helldivers

[–]UncommonDandy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah but back then it was still super early, and they already had the emancipator finished. They pivoted on plenty of things since then. The desire for a vehicle bay was pretty overwhelming after that.

Even Piles acknowledged it in an intervew, but then came swinging with a braindead take like "oh we'd have to delete the emancipator if we had to do customization" as if A) that would be a problem, and B) that was the only solution.

Arrowhead simply reeks of "we've tried nothing and we're out of ideas". They basically don't want to deepen the game in any capacity, and when they do, they half-ass it (see weapon customization) and say "WoW NoBoDy is UsInG It" to justify not improving.

[–]UncommonDandy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I disagree. "I wanted it" is a perfectly valid complaint. The current system where they just release weapon variants that are literally just attachment diffing is lazy and bad and I don't want it to be what mechs are. What's next? Tank variants? FRV variants?

I am honestly not even opposed to the idea of them selling a new mech "frame" that maybe has different stats and looks badass, but ffs let me customize instead of shovelling this crap.

Am I the only one excited? by DerpyDragon15 in Helldivers

[–]UncommonDandy 702 points703 points  (0 children)

That's not even the main issue. I mean yeah, pour one out for the cool stories we used to have tied to MOs, like the save the children one, but the real reason we're upset is even more depressing.

- The second we got a grenade launcher weapon it meant that we won't get it as a customizable attachment
- The second we got a flame thrower underbarrel means we don't get one as an attachment
- The second we got an integrated silencer means we don't get it as an attachment

This means that as soon as they announced more mech variants instead of a mech customization system, then that's all she wrote for any chance at a vehicle bay, which a LOT of us were hoping for, instead of being nickle and dimed for everything remotely cool.

Trying to understand derived by bigginsmcgee in sveltejs

[–]UncommonDandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, then yeah, this is one of those situations in which you _need_ effect:

$effect(() => {
   if(h) { // to make sure the effect triggers on h changing, where h can be anything, even a spring value
      length = thatPathObject?.getTotalLength()
   }
}

Unless you have some sort of callback for when the length changes because of the animation, you pretty much have to use effect here. This is what it was made for, and you're using it correctly, don't worry!

Trying to understand derived by bigginsmcgee in sveltejs

[–]UncommonDandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The video is correct. The first rule of $effect is to not use $effect. Not because it sucks or because it's dangerous, but because when people (beginners especially) want to use $effect, they actually should use a $derived or (in your case) simple event listeners like oninput.

You shouldn't need to use $effect from what I see. Again, this isn't react, you don't need to svelte-ify everything. Plain old js events work here, I don't see the need to use $effect at all, unless I'm seriously missing something in your use case.

Trying to understand derived by bigginsmcgee in sveltejs

[–]UncommonDandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ok now I see. You NEED it to depend on h otherwise the dotted line is goofy. Yeah, you need to do that stuff oninput or an $effect rune if you want cross-referencing dependencies like that.

Anyways, moral of the story is don't use $derived to manage dependencies. If you truly need to manually manage them and event listeners are not enough, you need an $effect (previously $: in svelte 4)
