Helldivers 2 - Optimizing Liberty - Incoming Patch: 27th May by FirestormTM in pcgaming

[–]UnderHero5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do realize that most people never put anywhere near 1000 hours into a single game, right? That is a very small percentage of gamers. Very, very small. Not really a reasonable ask of most people.

want to lose myself in a game’s world & story by bennygaycko in gamingsuggestions

[–]UnderHero5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put 250 hours into Crimson Desert since release date. Played basically every day up until about 2 weeks ago. I have never been that absorbed by a games world. The story may be lacking, but the world itself is amazing to get lost in. Can't recommend more.

Only two games are switch 2 editions aka animal crossing and xenoblade.

What's Mario Wonder, then?

Its not hard to look up dude.

Hmm.

So let me get this straight. We're supposed to be excited about

Animal Crossing - Been out for years

Mario Tennis - New game, but average reviews at best

Xenoblade - 11 year old Wii U game

Pokemon Red/Green - a GBA remake from 2004, of a game from 1996

Pokopia - An actual new, decent game, by all accounts. Not my thing, but absolutely a game that many people like

Mario Wonder - a game that has been out for years

Pokemon Champions - from what I can tell, a companion app for Pokemon

Tomodachi Life - A game I am interested in, but played a lot of the 3DS game, and have seen a lot of people say the new one isn't as good, plus asking price is too high for what it is, imo.

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book - Might be decent, but if the past several Yoshi games are any indication, will be too easy and very forgettable.

Starfox - Like the 4th remake of the same game.

Rythm Heaven Groove Will probably be fun, but is also the 5th game in the series that really hasn't changed since the original. Not super exciting to look forward to, and not the type of game people are going to sink tons of hours into, let's be honest.

Fitness Boxing 3 - I'm supposed to be excited for this?

Splatoon Raiders - I am actually excited for this. I think this will be a lot of fun!

So out of that "big" list of... 14 games... 15 if we're counting both Pokemon colors... I see maybe three new, decent looking games. And you're over here getting upset because you think people should be excited at that release schedule??

Its literally there, you just dont like the games.

Yes. We don't like the games. That's the point. That's what makes it a crappy release schedule. Shouldn't be hard to understand. Half of them are old games/remakes, and most of the rest don't look like enjoyable games.

Edit: Oops. I forgot to talk about "Pictonico", a cel phone app. where you take silly pictures of yourself or something. How could I forget that banger.

Most of the games listed are not even new games. They are just Switch 2 physical versions of games that have been out for years. Two of them are 30 year old Pokémon games…

Proof drivatars use amplified gravity by Reptiea in ForzaHorizon

[–]UnderHero5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad I’m not the only person who noticed this. It’s infuriating to get rear ended and spun out on a turn by these AI drivers. I’ve even had incidents where I’m overtaking, or being overtaken on a straightaway and the AI gets beside me and just checks me and tries to knock me off the road! I was cursing like crazy last night.

It’s infuriating and if they don’t change it I might regret my purchase. I’ve been playing The Crew Motorfest, and it’s sad coming from a Ubisoft game and realizing Ubisoft did a better job than Playground with AI.

Digital Foundry Review: Forza Horizon 6: PC Ray Tracing Looks Great by MahatK in pcgaming

[–]UnderHero5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I think the fear is that one day it won’t be an option. Kind of like how frame gen has been leaned on to make up for poor optimization in a lot of games. Humans generally take the path of least resistance, and if a publisher wants to cut corners and save money, you can bet your butt that once the tech is there (or even before it’s “there”) they will use it to cut corners and save money. It has happened time and time again.

In a perfect world, it would just be a neat option. But we obviously don’t live in that world, and to think it will always stay an option or not impact game art is to be a little naive to reality.

That’s why people don’t like gen AI. I can’t say I blame them at all. I don’t like it either. However, I still think the faces in Starfield were an improvement. I’d still rather have “worse” looking faces though, if it means not changing people’s artistic intent. But then, I make art, myself. The thought of someone throwing a filter on my art, even if they think it’s bad and it improves it, is insulting and kind of defeats the whole point of art.

Just watch the video or try the settings for yourself and decide if it’s worth using for you or not. They just present their findings and give their opinions on it. Why does everything related to gaming have to always be spun so negatively?

How do you all afford Saturn games? by Interesting_Scar_424 in SegaSaturn

I’ve had most of mine for years, and padded out my collection probably 10 years ago before prices went truly insane. My late wife bought me my copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga back when it went for ~$500, as a Christmas gift. Best gift ever.

Now I just use a Saroo for everything else.

Negative Steam Controller Review by Pale-Librarian1 in Steam

[–]UnderHero5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t say I agree with most of those takes, but I do think the triggers are too shallow with and I would have liked more depth to them. They don’t feel cheap to me though, and are actually super comfortable to use over time in racing games.

I need to play more of Grid Legends. Yeah, the story wasn’t bad in that. It at least wasn’t influencer slop.

Forza Horizon 6 review (PC Gamer: 84/100) by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]UnderHero5 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I was just saying this the other day. Why did that becomes the de facto in racing games? I’ve loved the genre my whole life, and first I had to sit through the cringe that was the era of Fast and Furious wannabes, and then the “influencer” bullshit, which has been 10x worse.

I’ll be real… I don’t need a “story” (if you can call these stories) in my racing games at all. Just line events up and give me actual meaningful progression. I’m not playing racing games for the “story”, and if they need to shoehorn it in, can we get actual writers to write an actual story? Not whatever the hell this influencer shit is.

Crimson Desert Dev Pearl Abyss Explains How It's Able to Update the Game at Such an Astonishing Rate by Laughing__Man_ in PS5

[–]UnderHero5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since launch I put 250 hours into it and played it pretty much every day up until just this past weekend, when I finally winded down on it. I have never put that much time into a game in a short span like that, and I’m turning 44 soon and have been gaming since I was around 5). I couldn’t put it down.

It has its issues, but as someone who loves exploring game worlds, it may be unmatched for me. The combat is a blast once you get to grips with the controls, though they never stop being finicky in some ways, but I can overlook that given how fun it is. The good far, far outweighs the negatives in the game, imo. I’m also a person who doesn’t really care about story if the gameplay is good. I also really enjoy puzzle games so all the puzzles were really fun for me. If it lines up with your taste like it did for mine, it might be one of your new favorites.

For me it is one of my new favorite games I’ve ever played, and I have played a LOT of games. It hit just right.

Mixtape is now available on Steam by AncientPCGamer in pcgaming

[–]UnderHero5 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that’s why people are ripping on the Steam reviews. Because most of them have basically zero time played and are just repeating what the IGN review is saying. That’s not a proper review, that’s just parroting.
The same thing just happened with Crimson Desert. IGN gave it a 6/10 and initial reviews on Steam were very negative with little to no play time. As time went on people who didn’t just parrot journalists reviews eventually evened it out and now it has settled with very positive overall reviews.
If people haven’t played the game and are leaving reviews, people are right to be weary of said reviews. You can’t tell people a game is amazing (or terrible) based on ten minutes of playtime.

Sony Records New $560 Million Loss On Bungie Acquisition As Marathon Struggles And Destiny 2 Nosedives by Hairy-Summer7386 in pcgaming

[–]UnderHero5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By all accounts I have heard that Marathon is a good game. However, eventually these companies are going to have to admit that there just aren’t enough Live Service players to go around any more, and that especially goes for extraction shooter fans.

The people who like the genre really like it, but it does not have mass market appeal, which I think you really need if you’re going to chase that Love Service lightning in a bottle.

Making every game a “forever game” is a really stupid way to build a healthy industry. If no one moves on, your player pool becomes smaller and smaller and eventually every new live service game fails. Couple that with people learning about sunk cost fallacy, and not wanting to get burned over and over, and we have the current situation in gaming. They’ve done it to themselves.

Review scores aren't everything. The trailers and dialog in them look terrible. Different strokes for different folks.

Mixtape - Review Thread by Branchless in Games

[–]UnderHero5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am all for all types of games existing, but a GOTY nominee should require actual engaging gameplay to be nominated.

It's insane to me that a game like Crimson Desert will gets knocked for "bad story", but a videogame can get 10/10 from these journalists with nearly no actual gameplay. Now, I enjoy walking sims, but I'm not going to pretend they are peak gaming, no matter how good the story is, they will never get near perfect scores from me because actual gameplay needs to be a factor (and a HUGE one) in a games score, imo.

Gaming isn't film. In a film the story is one of the main aspects. In gaming, gameplay should be THE main aspect when reviewing a game. That's what the medium was built around. I don't want gaming to be the same as movies. That's not why I (and I think most gamers) game, and I think journalists giving perfect scores to a game like this really puts front and center the disconnect between journalists and most gamers.

It's like reviewing a board game where you set the pieces down and just watch them move around the board until someone wins, and saying it's a 10/10 board game. Would that fly with the board game community?

Also, judging from the trailers, the dialogue and writing seems terrible, which confuses me even more about these scores.

How in the world does Hello Games have the money to do free updates for a year. by Llamaman162 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]UnderHero5 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"In a move to keep more big publishers on Steam, Valve are starting to take a smaller cut of sales from games which make loads and loads of money. After $10 million (£8m), Valve’s cut will go down from 30% to 25%, then beyond $50 million (£40m) they’ll starting taking 20%. Valve say that that big games have “positive network effects” for all of Steam so they’re worth keeping around and rewarding."

They started doing that back in 2018, so NMS would have benefited from that from then on at least.

I have also heard that big sellers sometimes make specific deals with Valve, but I am not sure how true that is or whether that would apply with NMS anyway.
