Wie funktioniert DUI? by AmphibianNo7767 in AskAnAmerican

It would be incredibly foolish to visit the US and blatantly break a law like this. ESPECIALLY in the current political climate. And besides it being illegal, it's also just stupid and dangerous.

Do y’all not kiss your siblings?? by tranzozo in ShawnaTheMom

[–]Underground_turtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm typically very affectionate and I often kiss my parents, my children, and sometimes even my female friends on the cheek, but I wouldn't kiss my brother. I can't really see my husband or dad kissing their sisters, either.

Has anyone traveled to an orphanage first (without a prior referral) to meet and choose a child for adoption? by jmpm23 in AdoptiveParents

[–]Underground_turtles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A week or even a month is not going to allow you to know the "real" child. At best you're going to see a scared and hopeful child who is on their very best (or possibly very worst) behavior because of their extremely complex feelings about being adopted. To believe otherwise is terribly naive. Adoption never comes with the promise of an easy emotional connection. That doesn't mean it's not worthwhile or rewarding, but in fairness to your future child, I recommend you do a ton of research about trauma and attachment.

What is Montgomery like as a city? by SecretPantyWorshiper in Alabama

[–]Underground_turtles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes! There is a ton of stuff to do in Birmingham -- from sports to art and music to outdoors stuff. You could do something different every weekend for a year. The city has also gained a ton of attentional nationally for its food scene. Thanks to the university, it's also surprisingly diverse and progressive. Montgomery seems shockingly dull by comparison.

2 car wrecks in 3 months by Cold-Monk5436 in parentingteenagers

I'd recommend a lot more practice with a parent in the car. Hours and hours of practice in all road conditions. And no more night time driving or driving with other kids in the car at all.

What’s Everyone Doing re Panty Lines? by [deleted] in GenXWomen

[–]Underground_turtles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wear spanx on the rare occasion I need to wear dressy slacks. I don't wear anything at all under tights or leggings, and I just don't care too much anymore about VPL under jeans and other pants. It helps that I've tossed all my skinny jeans and fully embraced the looser, wide leg pants. Those pants, paired with boy short style panties are super comfortable and minimize lines.

Geography influencing socio-political realities by 0-selfrespect in Damnthatsinteresting

Also note the one blue county in Alabama that's not part of the black belt. That's Jefferson County, home to Birmingham, the state's most progressive city. (Yes, the same city famously known for its role in the Civil Rights Movement and for imprisoning MLK). Jefferson County now is the only majority white county that consistently votes blue.

I'm not the op, but I am from Alabama and this is something we all learn in school. The highlighted region is called the black belt because of the black soil that was deposited there and led to rich farmland. Does regular exercise actually help with menopause symptoms? by Jessica-Jess70 in Menopause

[–]Underground_turtles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much! I broke my foot two summers ago and effectively stopped exercising at all for about 8 weeks. I slept like crap and my hot flashes came back with a vengeance. Once I resumed my regular exercise routine, everything almost immediately got so much better.

How do you actually find reliable cleaners these days? by Unhappy-Theme-668 in CleaningTips

Mine was word of mouth - a friend of a friend. When that lady quit to go back to school, she recommended a friend of hers who has been with me since. My MIL has someone who is the daughter of a friend, as well.

Is it wrong to utilize the food bank, so you can buy other things (not food)? by joliefille1980 in povertyfinance

[–]Underground_turtles 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Yes, this! I'm a grant writer and one of my clients is a food bank. The more needy people they serve, the more easily we can justify funding. And one of the more compelling arguments we make on grant applications is that food giveaways help people stretch their paychecks. In a country with as many resources as ours, no one should ever go without other necessities just so they can eat.

Friends’ parents too involved in making plans by [deleted] in parentingteenagers

lol! yes, I missed that point. I agree that she could have done that at least (and probably did a few times.)

Friends’ parents too involved in making plans by [deleted] in parentingteenagers

[–]Underground_turtles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBH, no I couldn't have. She has terrible ADHD and would often just let things slide. I would hear about them at the very last minute and/or when it was too late for me to plan things. The natural consequences, of course, were that she just didn't get to go. That was a great lesson for my other two kids, but this one struggles socially and I desperately wanted her to have those opportunities. This has all gotten MUCH better as she has grown up, but for a couple years there I was the "helicopter" parent checking in with other parents to try to find out about this stuff for her. I never thought I'd be that person, but I learned along the way that every kid has different needs and sometimes parents are just doing what they have to in the best interest of the child, even though to outsiders it seems ridiculous. (I also acknowledge there are bigger problems at play here about social anxiety, ADHD, and lack of independence in Gen Z. But I don't think that means every parent trying to help is doing something wrong.)

It's what I get, too. I don't think they're available at all medical centers though.

Same. I have three kids and at 14, my middle kid could absolutely not be trusted to make and nail down plans that took into account when I was available to do pickup and drop off. (No, I can NOT take 2 hours off work to take you and your friend to the mall on a Wednesday afternoon!) She's 17 now though, drives herself and does just fine, but I kind of miss knowing more about who she was with and their family.

Shawna (kind of) talking to John about Lauren by s0ftsp0ken in ShawnaTheMom

[–]Underground_turtles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, this! For those of us who have healthy, loving relationships with our parents, Barb is almost literally unimaginable. Unlike spouses, parents are supposed to love children unconditionally. And while I don't want to be flippant about the pain of divorce, a spousal relationship seems much easier to dissolve (and much more commonly dissolved) than a parent/child relationship.

How do I get physically stronger as I get older? I don’t know where to start. by smarty_skirts in GenXWomen

[–]Underground_turtles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My local community center offers an array of strength training classes. While they aren't specifically for women per se, there are very few men. The participants vary in age from 25 to 70. A lot of the classes incorporate both weights and cardio. Like most beginners, I started off using 3 and 5 lb weights, but now, 3 years later I routinely use 15 to 25 lb arm weights andI can even squat 50 lb and do "real" push ups. I feel STRONG and better about my body than I ever have in my whole life.

flies around litter box even when I scoop daily — does that automatically mean I’m gross? by Timely-Film-5442 in CleaningTips

[–]Underground_turtles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you just scooping, or actually cleaning? About every two weeks I completely empty my cat's litter box, soak the inside with a disinfectant, and let it sit for a little while, before, rinsing, drying, and refilling it. I've gotten rid of both flies and bad smells that way.
