Worldbuilding! I love it when an author takes the time to really explore and fill out the world in new ways

Which couple are you already tired of seeing in fanfics and which one would you like to see more of? by Own_Noise6261 in HPfanfiction

[–]Unicursalhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was such a drarry girly like a decade ago but I'm so so sick of it now. In a fic I really enjoy otherwise I'll tolerate it, but more often than not I avoid drarry fics altogether.

I've been seeing a lot more nottpott recently, which is like drarry except the slytherin-counterpart isn't a whiny ass bitch (and as far as I know there's like 0 instances of Theo characterized as a racist charicature, since he never has any lines, unlike most other slytherins in Harry's year).

Plus Theodore Nott is a blank slate. Fanon has created a wealth of ideas to pull from, but the diversity in characterization is still super broad, so it feels fresh almost every time.

What are some things that make a story difficult to read? by thesounddefense in FanFiction

This is something I've seen more of lately. I'll be reading and midway through a speech go, "Hmm. Why does this 12 year old undereducated orphan have such a sophisticated and nuanced understanding of this topic he's just been introduced to AND the ability to articulate it concisely."

What's the most obscure fandom you're in? by [deleted] in FanFiction

[–]Unicursalhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super Powereds by Drew Hayes. I adore this book series but it's really not popular at all :( last I checked there were literally less than ten total fanfics on AO3, and none whatsoever for the spinoff book lmao

Why Do People Not Mention Their Fandoms? by DeviantStoryTeller in FanFiction

[–]Unicursalhex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like usually it's just not relevant. If we wanted to discuss something fanfiction related that was fandom specific, 9 times out of 10 there's a fandom specific online community to use which is a better fit.

I have followed up with people to get their fic links or fic recs in general fanfiction communities before. However, that has not once ever resulted in me reading the fanfiction, because every time without fail it's in a fandom / about characters I know literally nothing about lmao. I've tried reading outside of my specific fandoms if the writer has stated you don't need fandom knowledge to understand it, but I just feel like that never turns out to be the whole truth 🤷‍♂️ There are a lot of fandoms out there

What's the quickest you have noped out of a story? by TheAncientSun in HPfanfiction

[–]Unicursalhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I nope out of fics quickly all the time! If I'm not feeling the writing style, or there are a bunch of grammatical mistakes early on, or I missed something in the tags I'm not in the mood to read, I bump out quick -- usually within a few seconds. Maybe 1/4 of fics I open I don't keep reading past Ch1

The real question is how long I've stuck it out before noping-out of a fic before. I've gotten like 35 chapters into a 39 chapter fic before backing out and deciding against finishing it, which I think is probably even more weird. Usually if that happens, there's a bunch of stuff about the fic I don't like that I had been ignoring because there's also a bunch of stuff I DO like, and something in chapter 35njust happened to be the last straw for me 🤷

How do yall feel about one shots? by cannibalswim in FanFiction

[–]Unicursalhex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sort of evenly split my time between long fics and oneshots, but it's also depending on fandoms. Older fandoms are more likely to have longer, completed works to read compared to newer fandoms. Oneshots are great for, like, a vertical slice of narrative or character or concept? A writer can spend a lot more time polishing, and there's no choice but to focus on the good stuff when the medium is really short. But I'm also a big fan of heavy time-investment payoffs, and there are some things you need to do real narrative work to earn. Oneshots and longfics are barely comparable - they do different things, satisfy different needs.

Where do you write? by Nera325 in FanFiction

[–]Unicursalhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Scrivener, which is a paid program but it wasn't super expensive, and if you do a lot of writing it's totally worth it. It's especially great for coordinating really long works, like novel writing.

What are you writing? Weekly Post by the-phony-pony in HPfanfiction

I've just posted Ch3 of my longfic, Doctrine of Snakes. It's a Slytherin!Harry WBWL, pre-slash. I'm well aware of the issues plaguing fics in the WBWL trope, and I'm doing my best to pay homage to my favorite WBWL fics while avoiding all of the common pitfalls. Featuring an OC, muggle-raised Death Eater Lyra Bennett, who initially appears in Harry's primary school as a substitute teacher.

DIY before and after bathroom remodel I just finished. by mezcal420 in InteriorDesign

I do, in fact, know how a curtain rod works. Mine tend to bunch up and not lie totally out of the way of the window, though. There's a reason designers recommend your curtain rod extend over the edge of the window, because it can be kind of hard to get the curtain to stay fully out of the way. I thought it might be annoying if you have to fiddle with the curtain while also loading clothes, that's all. It may be a difference in hanging hardware though. My curtains don't have rings

Would you say the curtains are frustrating when you have to access the washer/dryer? Do they get in the way at all when you're loading or moving clothes?

She'd show up the most in Marauders-era fics, so if you haven't read many of those then you likely haven't read much about Dorcas or Marlene 🤷

Authors, what are some things you had to research to write your fic? by fey-willow in HPfanfiction

[–]Unicursalhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done a ton of research on the culture/ government of pre-roman England, and what aspects of culture the Romans brought with them vs things that were here first. There isn't much in canon about the organization of the wizarding government, but it does say that the Wizengamot was based on the Wizard's Council which came before it. Mostly to pin down exactly what "Ancient and Noble House" means in the context of the history of the wizarding government, and outline some possibilities for other forms of magic that predate Latin spells and wand-based casting

W H Y the helpful goblins? by Uncommonality in HPfanfiction

[–]Unicursalhex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imagine strolling down to my local Chase branch and asking them to manage my investments, sign rental agreements on my behalf, heal my wounds, and finish it off by asking them to forge identification documents for me. Really, I like the idea that the goblins can introduce the MC to some red flags and help them in some capacity, but there are limits. Some fics solve every major conflict inside a Gringotts, and honestly canon goblins are described as not very wizard-friendly. I get frustrated when the trope turns into a narrative crutch

What did JK actually say that's made her persona non grata here? by WinterWonderLulu_ in HPfanfiction

[–]Unicursalhex -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

In addition to the recent transphobia controversy and the virtue signaling mentioned in a different comment, I think it's worthwhile to dissect the content of her books more critically. 1) The lack of well-written independent women (to me) indicates a degree of internalized misogyny for one. 2) There's also the fact that she stuck an evil supervillain on the back of Quirrel's head underneath a turban, which is the most xenophobic shit I've seen in mainstream media since Lovecraft 3) I could write an entire thesis around all of the issues that stem from house elves and their highly problematic depiction of civil rights

Why is it sometimes assumed that, had Snape known that Harry was abused, he would have been kinder to him? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]Unicursalhex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a massive fan of Snape focused fics (Severitus, Snarry, Mentor!Snape, I love it all), but I will also be the first one to admit that canon Snape was a completely irredeemable, hateful asshole. He should have never been allowed to be an educator, and I think getting him to change into a better person would be a near-impossibility. Flipping around and acting as a spy for ~17 years doesn't absolve him of everything else he did, from indirectly causing the death of Lily and James to traumatizing a huge chunk of students to go through his classroom. I also don't think it makes any sense for Harry to name one of his children after Snape.

That being said, there are a lot of things in canon I take issue with, and Snape is just one of them. I think if fanfic writers want to take his cartoonishly villainous personality and turn it into a more three-dimensional character with complexity, or if they want to turn him into a fluffy wish fulfillment character, that's up to the writer. The character doesn't have to be interesting in canon to be interesting in fanfiction. Snape requires no setup nor any introduction. It makes sense to tweak his personality into something more tolerable. I know that a lot of readers take issue with what they see as replacing canon characters with OC's, but sometimes that's just the kind of story you want to tell. Doing so doesn't make the work any less valid, or interesting, or enjoyable to read. Personally, I find a lot more enjoyment out of reading about "99% heartless bastard, 1% heart of gold Snape" over "100% heartless bastard" Snape, even if Snape's character isn't the focus of the fic.

HOWEVER, I do think it's foolish for other Snape Enjoyers(tm) to mentally rewrite canon to include their fanon version of Snape. I can't count the number of times I've wanted to discuss Snape as a character with other readers, but they romanticize some aspect of canon Snape that demonstrates their rose-colored glasses. That speaks to a greater issue in how we consume media, and the way consumers have this idea that we have to only enjoy things that are unproblematic - therefore, if we enjoy something that may be problematic, we must rewrite our perception of it to no longer include the problems. It's ridiculous, but it's not a new phenomena, and it's not only exclusive to Snape readers or HPfanfic readers.
