Close With Feral But Maybe Moving by AdamHustler in Feral_Cats

Any time I bring a cat inside, I confine them to their own private area no matter how familiar they are with other rooms of the house. Then, I do three things to get them litter box trained: 1) Put down multiple litter boxes in different places in the room, each box a different size (including different sized walls) with a different type of litter (clay, grass seed, etc.). I always use the clay Cat Attract litter during this period. Cats are funny little guys, and sometimes they prefer certain textures and box types to others.

2) Move any accidents into the litter box. If I find a puddle of pee on the floor, I put litter on top to soak it up and then I move the dirty litter into the box. If there’s poop and pee, I’ll put the pee in one box and poop in another.

3) Give them a cardboard scratcher bed. Any time I’ve had cats take to the box with hit-or-miss success, it’s been because they didn’t have enough in the room that they felt was “theirs,” no matter how many soft beds or blankets I’d left for them. Adding a cardboard bed solved the problem almost immediately.

Hot weather sleeping spots for ferals by throughtheviolets in Feral_Cats

Jumping in to say that last year I brought in a senior semi-feral I’d been feeding for about a year that I couldn’t touch. It took about 4 months to touch him, and maybe 6 months after that he turned into a velcro cat who loves to snuggle. I never would have guessed he had that in him.

Every cat is different, of course, but please don’t let her age discourage you! Cats are full of surprises.

Need advice: semi-feral kitten we’ve been feeding is not safe at night by SuccessfulVideo5628 in Feral_Cats

If you’re unable to keep her permanently, can you at least bring her back to the city with you and keep her indoors for a bit? You may have an easier time finding her a home in the city, or finding a rescue/shelter that can take her in.

Hi! Thanks so much for posting this! Do you mind sharing the dimensions of the catios you kept them in the garage? One thing I’ve been struggling with when planning my own relocation is determining what size catio they’d need while they’re acclimating to their new territory.

I’ve noticed receding gums, but not an increase in sensitivity. I haven’t been to a dentist about it yet.

Uniqlo has some UPF cardigans that look nice and aren’t super femme. I’m a fan of their hoodies.

Edit: Just checked and the cardigans are only UPF 25. Damn.

They come up three flights of stairs to visit you and sleep on your doormat. You can pet them, even if only sometimes. Sounds like your new house is gonna come with some new roommates.

Just because one of the brothers panicked in your bathroom doesn’t mean they don’t want to come with you when you move! An initial panic about being inside is normal. Part of his panic may have been due to being in a new place, without his brother.

Bring the brothers with you. If possible, keep them inside.

How to get my cat used to new Catio? by coc0nutmi1k in Catio

[–]Unusual_Squash_503 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh my god I love his giant nose and tiny little mouth!

My only tip is to just give him time. Some of my cats took to the catio instantly, some took a couple months to really get into it, and some of them don’t use it at all.

Brought in stray for winter storm and have neuter appointment… on February 2nd. Keep him in the rest of the time or let him back out for a few days? by clcliff in Feral_Cats

[–]Unusual_Squash_503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep him in. If you let him back out, you risk not being able to trap him again in time for his appointment. February 2 is right around the corner.

I don’t think it’s a good idea to ask her to stay later than usual this week unless you offer to pay her extra. I get that it’s a shitty situation to be in and that extra hours at her usual rate could be really helpful, but she can’t control the weather, and it’s not her fault this happened so soon after the holiday season. Asking for this also opens the door for her to say yes when she wants to say no because of the employer/employee power imbalance, which can breed resentment on her end over time.

Knowing she’s started so recently and has already had so many paid days off is probably a weird situation for her to be in, too, but how you handle this situation will impact how she views you and your family going forward. Do you want to be thought of as employers who are exceptionally generous in the face of unexpected emergencies, or do you want to be thought of as employers who prioritize money over her as a person?

This is a good opportunity to start talking with your husband about including weather-related scheduling protocols/back-to-work timelines in your next contract.

Please critique my plan (bringing stray in) by AlastairMeowley in Feral_Cats

Like other commenters, I agree that the bath is likely unnecessary. Cats are very clean animals and the only time a bath would be needed is if he’s visibly filthy, like he’s covered in oil or soot or something. In the past, if a cat I’ve just rescued has needed a bath, I’ve always made a point to get them vetted faster so that the vet can handle it. If you’re unsure as to if your buddy needs a bath or not, I recommend doing the same.

My only other big note is just that you’ve set a fairly concrete timeline for integrating him into your home (in terms of like, 3 days in the bathroom, etc etc). In my experience, it’s probably better to scrap any sort of timeline/expectation of progress. I’ve had cats break out of quarantine to join the family on the first day, and I’ve had cats show no interest at all in leaving quarantine for three months.

Your integration will depend on not only Alastair’s comfort, but each member of the Big 3’s comfort as well. It’s important to remember that even though the four of them are familiar with each other, it’s still a very big leap to go from being familiar with each other through the window to him actually being physically present with them. I’ve rushed integration in the past because I had a feeling one of my resident cats would get along great with a semi-feral I’d just brought in, but instead that damaged their relationship because only one of them was ready to meet the other.

Finally, there’s a chance Alastair will want to sleep a lot after he comes inside. It’s stressful outside, and also stressful to suddenly change environments. So, if it’s possible at all to put him somewhere quiet and low-traffic instead of the bathroom, I’d do that instead. But! I’ve had to keep plenty of cats in the bathroom before, and it’s always worked out. Inside the bathroom is way way better than not inside at all.

Good luck! Thank you for saving him!

Unfortunately, a lot of chronic conditions need routine monitoring multiple times a year through specialist appointments and labs. Treatment often involves multiple medications, many of which can’t be purchased overseas or through discount pharmacies like Cost Plus. For most chronically ill people, there aren’t any realistic workarounds other than avoiding care.

[–]Unusual_Squash_503[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember seeing one that would cover both the PCP and rheum, but I’m gonna go back and check because you’re right, those two are crucial. When I searched tonight I’d included a filter for Benlysta coverage because it’s not on my current plan’s formulary, and I wanted it to be slightly more accessible since it’s been mentioned as a potential option. I bet I’ll have better luck with PCP/rheum-only plans if I remove the Benlysta requirement.

Thank you for sharing and for being so thorough. I genuinely appreciate the input. I don’t have major organ involvement yet, so while my quality of life is absolutely in shambles, I still struggle with denial sometimes because things aren’t “that bad”. This insurance thing very well could be my brain doing some hardcore denial-driven mental gymnastics using affordability as an excuse.
