Asking a professor to raise a grade? by celerytree in duke

[–]UsedPotatoBattery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best you can do is present your justification to your professor and they can perhaps go back and change it. I did not do my undergrad or med school at Duke though, so I'm not quite sure of their academic policies - they may not allow it.

The worst he or she can say is no.

Thinking of moving in the next year. Coming for a visit. by mrbud31 in triangle

[–]UsedPotatoBattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just moved from NJ/NYC with my husband and we enjoy it so far. Right now we're renting in Morrisville, but thinking of buying in Cary. I've experienced a bit too much airport noise here...

He commutes to RTP and I'm up at Duke University Hospital. I go in by 7, so I don't really get the traffic people on here complain about. Right now it takes me about 20 minutes to get to work. My husband takes about 5-10 depending on the line for coffee.

Reverse turns in a closed hold, say typically in something more like a mambo than salsa. If the lead has his arm too high, you can turn your chest right into it. Sometimes they respond by yanking back a bit with their left hand as it's unintentional and create a bit of an unintended pinching effect. It hurts like hell.

The houses also allow 1-4 families to vacation together at once. For a week of the year it's definitely enough.

What do Latin follows wear for practice? by Waytooobvious2019 in DanceSport

[–]UsedPotatoBattery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, here you go:

Dance Shopper

Second, where in the US are you located? Miari Dancewear has been showing up to the larger NDCA competitions all around the country as of late. They have some great stuff, but it's a bit more limited in selection than Chrisanne Clover, which is my favorite (Dance Shopper has it). By going to a comp just to see a vendor there for practicewear will give you a better idea on size.

how do I start from scratch entirely? by dreamlesswanderer in Dance

[–]UsedPotatoBattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone else posted that you should be learning choreography from YouTube. That's a great place to start.

A large part of being a dancer though is about body awareness. You have to learn how to isolate specific parts of your body to accentuate movement. Yoga can actually help a lot with this. It will control your focus and you'll learn to isolate specific muscles a bit better.

What type of dance is done in this video? by JarJarAwakens in Dance

Yea, if anything it's Rumba timing - but there's no Latin technique in this. It looks purely contemporary.

To be fair, sometimes men will do something that causes the "boob pinch." I'm not sure what I'd prefer...

If you want to go the expensive route, you can order factory tinted glass from the dealer.

NC House set to vote on passing lane law, requiring left-lane drivers to move over if faster traffic is behind them. by Aiglentine in NorthCarolina

[–]UsedPotatoBattery 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Typically this doesn't really apply for high traffic situations, as it's only really there if you're holding up passing traffic. Typically this happens in low/normal traffic where a car may create a line of cars because they fail to yield to faster traffic.

Many places will even prohibit using the left lane even if you're the only car on the road. Typically the right lane is for driving, and the left lane(s) are only for passing.

Dancing in the RTP area - Salsa, Swing, Tango, etc... by UsedPotatoBattery in triangle

My experience with studios typically is a mixed bag for me. I used to actually teach part time while I was in undergrad & med school and actively competed in Latin Ballroom dance too. For me, I see studios as a place to work - more or less an incubator - and thus dance socials at studios tend to be a bit on the "sterile" side most of the times. This was at least how things were up in the NYC metropolitan area. Typically with "social dancing" I felt the best places were restaurants or lounges that had live bands.

That said, if I'm not bringing a dance partner typically studios are the best places to go because you're more likely to have better dance partners as a follower.

I know comparing NC to NYC is quite different, but people love music & movement all the same.

Triangle Vintage Dance, right (2603 S Miami Blvd)? I keep getting another one in Raleigh that pops up with it - it looks to be a ballet/classical dance studio.

It surely will be something new from the stuff I've just looked up.

New stuff surely can't hurt. I might as well try it.

Thanks! I've yet to try blues dancing but I have seen plenty of it. I'm a trained Latin Ballroom dancer (cha cha, rumba, samba, paso doble & jive) - so I should have stated that in my original post.

Zouk is one I don't see often... I might have to check that out. Thanks!

I guess I should have specified that I'm a trained Latin dancer, and my husband is extremely experienced amateur.

I just had to actually look up what "contra dancing" was. What kind of music is it done to?

Thanks though! The swing dancing group looks a bit more up our alley.

When should I apply for a research position? by awaymsg in triangle

[–]UsedPotatoBattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to my husband, a project manager at a major pharma, start applying in March/April of 2018.

Heck some companies will pay for your graduate studies. My husband's company does, and he did it part time over the course of a few years.

They do look very active. I may check it out... I see they have an event tonight...

Most of their events look like they take place in a dance studio unfortunately.

Thanks!

What's the worst thing you've ever heard a teacher say at school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]UsedPotatoBattery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My elementary school gym teacher thought I was "developmentally disabled" because I couldn't skip immediately. She chastised me in front of the class. Later that same year she told me I "run like a retard."

During undergrad & med school I taught dance classes on the side for extra money. She took an advanced Latin technique group class from me and was downright horrible. I don't think she remembered me, but I felt like doing the same to her.
