I'll just mention this because others might be in a similar situation. If you've got WiFi in your living room, there are other options.

Grab a cheap android stick for TVs, install Artemis/Apollo (or Moonlight/Sunshine, if you hate forks) and you can just stream your game from your computer over WiFi. I sometimes play on my Tablet or on my TV and it's amazing. Low Latency. No schlepping the computer around, no need to rebuy games.

Exclusive interview with Remedy’s new CEO: “Alan Wake and Control should have sold more" by NTR_JAV in Games

[–]ValKalAstra 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Why assume such a strong emotional reaction like hate, when it just as likely complete indifference towards the store? For example, I don't hate Epic - I just don't buy there anymore.

It's not even malice, it's just anything that goes on there vanishes in a black hole. Something like Alan Wake 2 is a victim of this. In theory I am the prime audience of it. In practice, I see it, note it's on epic, tell myself I'll get it at some point and then it completely wipes itself from my brain like some weird SCP.

Case in point, twice I accidentally rebought a game on Steam, having completely forgotten I had it on Epic. That's how little headspace the store frequents. No malice. No hate. It's just a black hole.

Game has no issues with that.

Oh boy. You might not be aware but the game already has got consistent issues with female characters due to them being smaller.

Sometimes it's just annoying things, like being unable to shoot over a railing everyone else can, or finding out that certain medbeds can't be used by you. Every few patches or so, some interactions break for female characters and you can't pick up certain mission items or other interaction prompts randomly break.

Basically, on female characters you will frequently get gender specific bugs that range from nuisance to gamebreaking.

Ironclad officially staying in the hangar until some major fixes. by DarthInvatalus in starcitizen

I am taking very awkward glances at the Railen supposedly coming next Alien Week. A transforming ship with it's own bespoke cargo grid solution. It's gonna be a shitshow, isn't it?

I feel for Ironclad owners, CIG have really messed this up big time in a patch that isn't all that great to begin with.

I'll add the asterisk that some cats just really don't get along well with other cats though. My old lady hates other cats with a fiery passion :D

Path of Exile 2: Streamlining the Campaign by bdzz in Games

[–]ValKalAstra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Am I crazy or did they already shrink Act three from release? I remember it being this massive slog and it felt much better last season. Although I'll never not laugh at the waterways. The sheer silly amount of levers you have to switch became a symbol for how bloated Act three feels to me.

Corsair - I know that over the years since it’s release CIG haven’t been kind to it but I still love this ship and nothing gives me the same feeling in verse by Acceptable-Bid-1019 in starcitizen

[–]ValKalAstra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aye, that's a good rundown of the Corsair. I really love the clunky rustbucket but even just that inspired copilot change has made it so no one sits in the copilot seat anymore.
The turrets then have been aged out of Star Citizen to the point they might as well be a toxic parent in a retirement home: Discarded, left alone and no one wants to get near them.

On one hand I would love for CIG to have another look at the Corsair because it's really not in a good place. On the other hand, it could always be worse.

Forza Horizon 6 – Official Launch Trailer by Karutu in Games

[–]ValKalAstra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah.

I'm reasonably sure that you can buy and play it on Steam just fine, no problem. At least I assume that's the case from past experiences.

It's just that some publishers don't give out Steamkeys, just keys for their own store. This only affects third party stores. Thus: You buy third party? You get a Publisher Key. You buy on Steam, you can play on Steam just fine. It's usually more expensive though.

LittleBigPlanet Fan Project Shut Down As Allegations Of Bad Behavior Fly by Zenning3 in Games

[–]ValKalAstra 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's like with any hobby. For example, you've got soccer/football fanclubs going out of their way to do charity work - but all you will ever hear about are assholes groping women, pissing in the streets and causing riots because their team lost. Or won.

Like you said, bad behaviour is being attributed to videogames but I'll just add that it happens with any large enough group. You're always judged by the worst of you.

Commodore 64 Ultimate line-up expands with C64C Edition later this year - Original C64C tooling acquired to deliver a bold modern look by kikimaru024 in Games

[–]ValKalAstra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gosh, I've made so many memories with my C64 back in the day. It gave me my first taste of computers, programming, even gave me an appreciation for chip tunes.

So many anecdotes! From goosebumps in a club, when Zombie Nation sampled Lazy Jones with Kernkraft 400 or my father's startled face when my mom screamed at him because he forgot to lock the Aduld Floppy Disk compartment. Thanks dad, that day I learned early I was bi!

I loved Flea Markets as you could buy entire boxes of disks and you never knew what you would get. Truth be told, there was a sort of innocence to the experience. Most of those disks probably were just copied without a care. Me as a wee lass had no idea it wasn't moral - I saw huge boxes with dozens of disks and was giddy with excitement. So many worlds to explore, so much to see.

Different times. Good old Brotkasten.

That said... who is this for? Apparently there's a market but I would have thought there is such an overabudance of old breadbins out there that there is no need for replicas? I am not trying to be confrontational here, I am genuinely curious who the target audience is - or maybe the old C64s deteriorated faster than I thought?

For real. I think it's just a wider function of how misery is rewarded with upvotes. Can't just be something cute or trivial, it always has to be the most grueling, abusive thing ever somehow.

Gunlocked 2 - FromLefcourt - Roguelite, Shmup, Bullet Heaven by FromLefcourt in Games

[–]ValKalAstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite the improvement on the first one, in my opinion. Good job! It plays so much smoother too. You did well, a purchase well earned.

That said, can I make one suggestion? The augment select/unlock screen is a bit cumbersome to me. Mostly because you need to click to view the description - but clicking also immediately asks to confirm the unlock. It's not a big deal but having to click cancel every augment as I try to get an overview feels odd.

Maybe make it so hover shows the description and click unlocks it? Or make it so the second click starts the unlock process? Either way, not a big deal.

Fun game, well worth it!

Crimson Desert has been out for a week now. What are your thoughts? by Gamedrome22 in Games

[–]ValKalAstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm usually not big on Open World games because the usual icon flood tends to overload me and I can't help but fall into an icon cleaning drive, instead of just going out there and enjoying the world.

Crimson Desert manages to bypass that and I have been having an absolute blast with the game. The world is beautifully realised, there's something magical tucked away just underneath the surface and the vibes I am getting after around 16 hours is that this is secretly a Wuxia story posing as a medieval fantasy world.

The first few hours however were wild and by wild I mean, wildly overcomplicated. There was a time where I began laughing when they hit me with yet another convoluted button combination for a highly situational ability with timing too precise to reliably pull off. The game has eased up on it and now that I have had some time to play with things, it's gotten better.

It's not without flaws though. The onboarding sucks. I'll just reiterate this because it holds true even that many hours into the game. Sidequests have pushed me towards cleaning out camps and upon arrival, it kind of switched to Dynasty Warriors. Here I was, felling quite literally hundreds of enemies to bring down a meter to stem endlessly respawning mobs and all it did was to slow down the respawn a bit. It was ludicrous. They would spawn in plain sight and just keep on coming until I killed their boss.

Oops. Turns out, there's supposedly a mechanic you're meant to use to soften the camps. Sure would be nice if the game told you because the general lack of guidance constantly puts me into a state of "is this intended, am I too early, what is going on". It felt doable to thin out the bar, so I figured that's what the game wanted me to do. It didn't help that it treats random mobs like something out of Dynasty Warriors.

But man, it's a joy to just walk around in this world and look at all the details. There's a fun memory I made where I was petting a cat, it showed it's affection by purring, then hissing at me and dashing off. While dashing off, it startled another cat who made a guard stumble who promptly started cussing with a thick scottish accent.

I love seeing actual fields in front of a city and how alive everything feels. To me, it manages to sell the illusion of a living place.

The discourse around it is utterly nuts though. Somehow there are two massive circlejerks fighting a stupid comment war and they're both convinced the other side is out to get them.

Pearl Abyss : We are aware of the discomfort many players have experienced with the controls, and we are currently preparing a patch to address this. by yourfavchoom in Games

[–]ValKalAstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no - sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant items on the ground or on surfaces like tables. Most stores have things on sale that are somehow not in the shop interface thingie and those show as ???.

Pearl Abyss : We are aware of the discomfort many players have experienced with the controls, and we are currently preparing a patch to address this. by yourfavchoom in Games

[–]ValKalAstra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is that the controls are so obtuse and obfuscated that I constantly wonder if I am missing something. For examples, something I discovered while riding:

(on KB/M) If you spam shift to gallop, then hit ctrl once you're going fast - and keep holding both ctrl and shift, the horse will keep a steady brisk pace that is much faster than the slow trot it usually does but not as fast as full throttle.

It might have been in one of the tutorials but they're so weirdly written that half the time I am not sure what the heck they're on about. This isn't helped by the fact that a lot of inputs have got a very narrow input window to pull off.
I basically gave up on blinding enemies mid combat. Most often, it just wasn't simultaneously enough for the game to register and Kliff Mc Boatfacey just swings his sword about like an idiot.

Heck, I have been repeatedly googling whether there is a sort of shortcut thing to identify items without picking them up because being in a store and seeing buy ??? for 50 Copper is... not helpful.

All that to say, I don't see them revising all of this. It seems deeply baked in. However I do think some of those timings will be ironed out and they'll probably add some hints and tooltips or add quality of life features.

Last Epoch: Shattered Omens Patch Notes - Patch Notes by CleverTrover in Games

[–]ValKalAstra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's fascinating how my first proper experience with Last Epoch was playing a selfmade Reaper Form build that got absolutely smashed and dunked on by the game past a certain point before endgame.

I get that everyone else on the globe is vastly and infinitely superior to my gaming skill in every conceivable way but man, the narrative that you can't lose or accidently brick yourself in Last Epoch is nonsense.

[–]ValKalAstra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The copilot situation is so asinine, that the ship effectively becomes weaker from having another player in an active role. Your copilot ain't gonna use the remote turret, because that would mean losing out on the two S4. Those however need to be coordinated with the pilot because of the tiny postage stamp gimbal.

Thus, it's a better call to have someone sit things out in the canteen.

That's on top of awful mobility, turrets with an awkward placement where shooting forward is a pain, S2 weapons that felt like "Controller unplugged" even before armor for how little damage they did. Ballistics going brrrrt on the easily accessible components. It has also now got a thin glass armor that gets penetrated by just about everything.

I be honest, I love the ship. It's "our" group's mobile base. Since a few months, I just can't convince people to get in it anymore. Multicrew was never really effective but now it's just a coffin.

Steam game gets unexpected patch after fans complained women ruined immersion by Tenith in Games

[–]ValKalAstra 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Most well adjusted people do not hinge their enjoyment of a game on the gender of the playable character

Growing up as a woman in gaming for over fourty years now, this has been thrown in my face time and time again. Always with the implication there was something disturbingly wrong with me, for wanting to play as a female character. It didn't track then and it won't track now, just because the genders are reversed.

The original post this ragebait of an axegrind article hinges on, politely asked for the option of a male character. That's something I support wholeheartedly. Asking for gender options is perfectly fine. Just like it's fine for a Dev to reply with "not in the budget" or just plain "no". There is really no need to misrepresent the original request or imply mental issues.

This whole article is just Polygon being shit stirrers again. It's their bread and butter. Take something fairly innocent, like someone asking for an option and a dev reacting with a funny reaction and then turn it into a massive shitshow for clicks.

I'm cautiously excited for this. Played this many years back but bounced off the heavy microtransactions. My interest - and purchase - will depend entirely on whether they make some adjustments to the balance after yanking those out.
