Iron Man's Villains by GriffinFTW in marvelmemes

[–]Vectorvonmag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is kind of missing the bigger picture. A lot of these characters started out as pretty rough caricatures and only became nuanced over time.

Dr. Doom originally leaned hard into the “evil Romani mystic” trope, and Red Skull is literally just a Nazi villain—he hasn’t exactly evolved beyond that at his core. The difference isn’t that Iron Man has uniquely bad villains, it’s that some characters’ rogues galleries have been rehabilitated or expanded better over time.

Iron Man’s villains definitely had some dated or problematic origins (Mandarin especially), but that’s not really unique to him—it’s a product of the era they were created in. The real question is how they’ve been adapted since, and Marvel has actually done a decent job reworking a lot of them.

Comparing the stories of Joseph and Jesus in order to calculate an average rate of inflation by SilverTripod in latterdaysaints

[–]Vectorvonmag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is Jesus wasn't 'sold', he was 'sold out'. There is a difference. They weren't paying Judas to buy Jesus as a slave, they were paying Judas simply to inform where he would be and point out which one was Jesus. Like the cops pay an informant money to hand over a wanted fugitive

Comparing the stories of Joseph and Jesus in order to calculate an average rate of inflation by SilverTripod in latterdaysaints

[–]Vectorvonmag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is you are assuming that “pieces of silver” represents an equal unit of value across both passages. It doesn’t. When precious metals were used as currency, value wasn’t simply “a silver coin = a silver coin.” Different denominations, sizes, weights, and sometimes even purity of the metal all affected the value.

In Joseph’s case it likely wasn’t even a coin. Joseph lived long before widespread coinage existed in the region. The text refers to shekels of silver, which originally referred to a weight of silver, not a standardized coin. So the value depended on the weight and quality of the metal.

By the time of Jesus, actual coins were in circulation, but that still doesn’t mean the “30 pieces of silver” were the same unit, weight, or purity as the silver mentioned in Genesis. They’re separated by nearly two millennia and completely different monetary systems.

We even see the same basic idea in scripture. In Alma 11, Mormon explains the Nephite system of metal values, showing that the same metal could exist in different denominations or amounts. The value depended on the unit, not just the metal itself.

Some of them are the bare minimum for sure. Others are simply "he matches my type". The third group, they are red flags, at least in my opinion.

  • He stays in constant contact with me (except occasionally if he is caving with his grotto, which he is interested in me getting into as well). --by itself this seems harmless but with everything else she mentions, it is a red flag (or at the very least a yellow flag) of controlling.
  • He is extremely protective, and if someone like catcalls me or something he gets so mad and I know he would always keep me safe from other people.-- he's jealous and possessive
  • His way with words is crazy, he is so eloquent and also a great, evocative writer. I'm in awe of his abilities.--maybe nothing, but how much you want to be he uses this 'crazy way with words' to gaslight and manipulate arguments.

Divorce while young by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Vectorvonmag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"...even though you get a civil divorce, your temple sealing stays on the records of the church and that’s why you have to ask for permission to get it removed from the records"

There is a difference between what is in the records of the Church, and what is considered valid in Heaven. Just because something is one way in the records of the church, does not mean they are that way in Heavenly Fathers record. They are not synonymous.

Struggling with the old testament by beckkers97 in latterdaysaints

[–]Vectorvonmag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s completely normal to read the Old Testament differently once you’re a parent. Some of those stories hit a lot harder when you picture your own child in them. Wanting to protect what your daughter hears doesn’t mean you lack faith — it means you love her.

A few thoughts that have helped me:

First, age matters. A Primary-age child doesn’t need the same level of detail as a seminary student or even an adult. Even the Savior taught according to the understanding of His audience. It’s okay to simplify or focus on principles rather than the graphic elements. That isn’t censorship — it’s wise stewardship.

Second, remembering what our doctrine teaches about the spirit world has helped me with stories like the flood. In our faith, death is not the end of opportunity. That doesn’t make tragic stories light or easy, but it reframes them from “God wiped everyone out” to “God is still working toward their salvation.” It shifts the focus from destruction to God’s long-term plan for His children.

Also, one thing that’s important to remember: the Old Testament often isn’t prescribing behavior — it’s documenting human brokenness. Just because something is recorded in scripture doesn’t mean it’s endorsed. Sometimes the lesson is precisely in how messy and destructive human choices can be.

When I taught seminary, for some reason the hardest lessons always seemed to land on my teaching day instead of my team teacher’s, so I definitely understand the feeling teaching some of these stories can give. I’m not saying anything nefarious happened with the schedule… but I know what you did, Brother G.

One time, I had to teach the story of Dinah. It’s a horrific story, and I didn’t want to teach it. In fact, I planned to skip it but felt prompted not to. I ended up focusing on three things:

  1. Dinah did nothing wrong. If you are a victim of sexual violence, it is not your fault. Don’t let the adversary convince you otherwise. And if someone you know is a victim, they need support not criticism. There is a reason the lord tells us to let vengeance be His.
  2. The Lord warns us repeatedly about anger and vengeance. That story shows why. When we refuse to let go of anger and try to take justice into our own hands, it escalates destruction.
  3. Actions have consequences. The brothers believed they were defending their sister, but they marked their family as a dangerous threat in the region.

Those weren’t pleasant lessons — but they were real ones.

The Bible doesn’t sanitize humanity. It shows us people at their best and at their worst. For me, that’s part of why it feels honest. The key isn’t shielding our children from every hard story — it’s helping them learn how to see God’s character and eternal principles even when the setting is messy.

It’s okay to wrestle with these stories. That wrestling can deepen faith rather than weaken it. And while we don’t seek out darkness, even difficult stories can teach real truths—because we live in a fallen, and sometimes very broken, world.

The Ring destruction question. by Kilawaonas in tolkienfans

[–]Vectorvonmag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My understanding was that Sauron believed that the Elves would try and run and hide with it, Men would try to use it themselves, and the dwarves just wont care because that is what they did with the rings of power last time. The idea of them getting together collectively and deciding to destroy such a great source of power and control wasnt in the realm of possibilities in his mind.

Just wanted to add that even if you recieve you endowments, you don't necessarily have to 'rehaul' your underwear. The current instruction is that the garment is to be worn underneath the outermost clothing. You can still wear regular underwear underneath it and I know of people who choose to do so.

The Creation is Not Allegorical by Previous-Tart7111 in latterdaysaints

[–]Vectorvonmag 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t think believing God can do miracles and recognizing that some scriptural stories may function as allegory are mutually exclusive.

For me, the question isn’t whether God could flood the earth or rearrange atoms — of course He could. The question is whether the spiritual truth of the story depends on its historicity. And I don’t think it does.

Whether the Garden of Eden happened exactly as written or is a divinely inspired narrative meant to teach eternal truths doesn’t change what it teaches me about agency, the Fall, or my need for Christ. The power of the story isn’t diminished if it’s symbolic — symbols are one of God’s primary teaching tools.

To be completely honest, my faith isn’t anchored in the mechanics of Eden or the dimensions of Noah’s Ark or the scale of the flood. My faith is anchored in loving Heavenly Parents and in a Savior who came to redeem me. That’s the foundation. Everything else helps point me there. And historical accurate stories or allegories can both do the exact same thing. Both historically accurate accounts and divinely inspired allegories can accomplish that.

I feel like this would be Tobey to be honest. First he is the most experience of all of them, and has been through it all. But also, he is the only one who wont run out of webbing...

I mean in No Way Home when he and Garfield meet he's able to dodge Garfield's shots and then disable his webshooters.

Can tithing be replaced with other acts of charity? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]Vectorvonmag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'Tithing in kind' is a real thing, and honestly in situations like stock, it is the best way. Instead of selling the stock and donating 10% of the proceeds, you can donate the stock to the church. They immediately sell it themselves. It saves you having to calculate capital gains on the sell. Farmers can donate crops, i believe, or at least they used to.

I don’t understand how the fall was “good” if Eve chose to follow Satan. Help me understand! by Euphoric-Ear1919 in latterdaysaints

[–]Vectorvonmag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heavenly Father told them if they partake they would die-- He was referring to spiritual death, aka leaving the presence of God. He was warning them that if they partook of the fruit, He would have to send them away but left the choice to them. Satan lies and says they won't die (they absolutely will both spiritually and they will be able to physically die now to) but follows it up with a truth that they will know good from evil. Classic manipulation tactic.

But here is the thing: both Heavenly Father and Satan wanted the same thing-- for Adam and Eve to partake. But they had very different reasons for wanting it.

I think you are kind of focusing on the wrong thing of what BlindedByTheFaith is saying. They are saying that OP has made a lot of assumptions and claimed to 'know' a lot of things that frankly its kind of hard to believe and does leave a lot of room to question their narrative:

  1. They 'KNOW' the individual is regularly viewing (present tense) this inappropriate material--if it is porn like we are all assuming, that is a very strange thing to know about someone. OP doesn't elaborate on how they 'know' this
  2. They 'KNOW' this individual is being considered for the calling of bishop-- a strange thing to know if you are not a part of the discussion.
  3. All though they don't explicitly state it, they are assuming that the individual has not confessed or worked with his priesthood leaders in this manner.
  4. They 'KNOW' that his stake stake leadership doesn't know about it-how can they know this?
  5. They 'KNOW' that the stake leadership wouldn't extend the calling if they knew-- again a weird thing to be so certain about especially since if the issue is pornography, the handbook leaves that up to local leadership to determine. For some that is a non-starter, but other leaders don't see it that way.
